Hated Tropes [HATED] Adaptations done intentionally without help from the source

Halo TV show: Before the show came out, the writers were praising their decision to not look to the games for inspiration when making the show

God Of War TV show: Chris Judge, the actor of Kratos in the games from 2018-Now, spoke up about his dislike on the show not hiring anyone who worked on any of the previous games. One of the original creators of Kratos also spoke up about them not having faith in the adaptation.

Supergirl 2026 film: the director for the film not only said he decided to not read Woman Of Tomorrow, the comic the film is adapting, because he wanted to do his own thing, he also didn’t look at comic art for inspiration to design Lobo and instead used an AI image generator to design Lobo’s look for the film

Still one of the best Sci Fi movies around. Especially the director's cut.

Maybe it’s not always a bad thing?

I can’t believe how far I had to scroll down for this one. I guess 1997 was a long time ago.

Starship Troopers is a fun movie but a horrendous adaptation.

It’s not a horrendous adaptation. It’s a purposeful subversion of the source material. It’s not ignoring it, it’s dialoguing with and critiquing it and its ideas

It's not a very good subversion tho. They dress up NPH like a Nazi, but by the end you see that it's a functioning meritocracy with full gender equality. Verhoven even goes so far as to show the incompetent white male Skymarshall being replaced with a competent black woman her competence turns the tide of the war.

It's called nuance and it's actually good.

2

No it isnt. Verhoeven didnt even read the whole book before drawing the most idiotic conclusions about the narrative of the novel.

"Purposeful subversion" you would need to not be completely ignorant of what you are subverting in order for that to be true. Verhoeven is a hack.

The film is fun but you, just like Verhoeven, haven't read or completely misunderstand the message and story of the source material.

Verhoeven understood it very well, which is why his film pissed off so many fans of the book.

Verhoeven himself admits he didn't even read the whole book! He threw it out after a couple of chapters.

You, like Verhoeven DO NOT KNOW WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT.

THAT is what pissed off fans of the book.

Don't need to finish the bible to understand its purpose.

2

u/RedeemedNephilim Aug 21 '26

To understand its message? Um yes in fact you do.

What a comically moronic statement.

Thats like reading Genesis up until the flood and then stopping and going out and saying "well that book sucked the world ended and that was it"

to understand its purpose you dingus, and to know how to anger those who think its anything more than non-sense.

These examples were still at least aware of the original and then made key decisions

I do think in the case of Starship Troopers it’s not that the source material was ignored, but rather consulted, understood, and very purposefully subverted

Who taught you that BS talking point youre regurgitating?

4

u/ASERTIE76 Aug 21 '26

This one gets a pass for many reasons but mainly as someone else pointed out it never tried to be an adaptation of the book

7

But here the movie is called "Blade Runner" not "Do androids dream of electric sheep" it clearly a work that is inspired by roman but do there own thing, widout present it self as the roman.

1

u/CallowayMcSmithing Aug 21 '26

What?

5

u/Safe_Manner_1879 Aug 21 '26

What?

Blade Runner, the movie, is based on the book Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? but it is only loosely based on it. The film never tries to claim that it is Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? It is its own thing.

1

u/UncommittedBow Aug 24 '26

I mean its really only loosely based on "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?"

We dont call Robocop a bad adaptation of Caves of Steel because they're both stories about robot police, do we?

I cannot begin to describe how glad I am they didn’t add the whole empathy box shit to the movie
