Hated Tropes [HATED] Adaptations done intentionally without help from the source

Halo TV show: Before the show came out, the writers were praising their decision to not look to the games for inspiration when making the show

God Of War TV show: Chris Judge, the actor of Kratos in the games from 2018-Now, spoke up about his dislike on the show not hiring anyone who worked on any of the previous games. One of the original creators of Kratos also spoke up about them not having faith in the adaptation.

Supergirl 2026 film: the director for the film not only said he decided to not read Woman Of Tomorrow, the comic the film is adapting, because he wanted to do his own thing, he also didn’t look at comic art for inspiration to design Lobo and instead used an AI image generator to design Lobo’s look for the film

I don’t think he meant that Ashley Johnson should be a 40-year old playing Ellie.

And who says the writers of the game even wanted to write on the show? They’re all busy writing games at the moment. Do they even have time to do both? Or would they prefer to right for live action, something they’ve possibly no experience with vs a video game?

Ok, but this is the crux of it. If you don’t have the people who have passionately spent years cultivating and growing the story, maybe don’t adapt it? Every single instance of this results in those storytellers either not being consulted or being consulted and then ignored.

And that’s a silly point. Countless fantastic adaptations are made by new writers or fans who weren’t involved in the source.

Peter Jackson sure as hell didn’t write the original LotR books. How many great comic book movies were written by people who never wrote a comic book before?

This also ignores that Cory Barlog is involved in the show. The guy who has been leading and writing God of War series for twenty years. So like… what’s the issue lol? You’ve got the lead writer and creator of the Norse games, the games your adapting, involved in the tv show.

The point is that almost every single instance of a popular IP adaptation of the past decade is introduced not as a passion project, but as a shortcut to an audience and therefore a safe gamble for capitalism. But we also know the most successful adaptations are almost always from somebody who deeply loves the source material.

So there’s two routes here to a decent outcome.

  1. A talented director with a passion for the IP picks it up and does it justice (best)

  2. A studio recognizes the popularity of the IP and works to ensure they build a team who will respect the source material and do it justice (good)

Even with Peter Jackson’s passion for LOTR, we can see the flaws in those movies that we ignore because the rest is so incredible. But compare that to how The Hobbit trilogy turned out. Why are they so different in quality? Because capitalism cannot manifest authenticity. Where are the successful adaptations in the streaming era?

This also ignores that Cory Barlog is involved in the show. The guy who has been leading and writing God of War series for twenty years. So like… what’s the issue lol? You’ve got the lead writer and creator of the Norse games, the games your adapting, involved in the tv show.

Because “Executive Producer” doesn’t mean much? Cory Barlog is a legend but how much influence does he actually have on the show? On the writing? Does he have full control like he did for the games? He’s still producing multiple games in the series at the same time, so how involved is he?

Who is the passion behind this project? Or is it just another cash grab?

Even with Peter Jackson’s passion for LOTR, we can see the flaws in those movies that we ignore because the rest is so incredible he didn't force me to see black people on my tv

FTFY, you're not really fooling anyone.
