Hated Tropes [HATED] Adaptations done intentionally without help from the source

Halo TV show: Before the show came out, the writers were praising their decision to not look to the games for inspiration when making the show

God Of War TV show: Chris Judge, the actor of Kratos in the games from 2018-Now, spoke up about his dislike on the show not hiring anyone who worked on any of the previous games. One of the original creators of Kratos also spoke up about them not having faith in the adaptation.

Supergirl 2026 film: the director for the film not only said he decided to not read Woman Of Tomorrow, the comic the film is adapting, because he wanted to do his own thing, he also didn’t look at comic art for inspiration to design Lobo and instead used an AI image generator to design Lobo’s look for the film

This is an awful example. Judge, as nice as the guy might be, has an awful opinion too. He thinks Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson should have played Joel and Ellie. His hearts in the right place but it has nothing to do with the show adaptation. Just because you were part of the games doesn’t mean you’re immediately useful for the adaptation. The games don’t even have the same writers the entire time, shifting new talent in and out.

The original creator (I’m assuming you mean Jaffe) is a fucking bitter old man who literally hates the entire series. He hates the Norse trilogy too and no one takes him seriously.

Cory Barlog / Santa Monica is stated to be heavily involved with the Amazon show similar to Todd/Bethesda with the Fallout show. We’ll see after it comes out but it’s a terrible example for this “trope”.

He just said their version of it was incredible. I took it to mean he was a fan of the writing of it. His rant was at no point about the actors but about the writers

“ My problem with all game adaptations [is] you have this pre-existing, successful property, and the first thing you do is   not  hire anyone associated with it," said Judge. "The Last of Us — love Pedro [Pascal]— were they better than the game cast? I saw a stage reading that they did. It was unreal. I have no idea why you don't take that cast, those writers, especially when you are going to do episodes that are shot-for-shot remakes of the game.”

Eh. It’s definitely not just a writing issue he brings up. I get his point, the people who made the game know best. But at the same time…. They’re game writers. They’re currently writing games. Do they even have time or want to write on a tv show? There’s nothing to suggest that Amazon didn’t want game writers or rejected them. So it seems weird to just assume that. Cory and the studio responsible for the game are tied to the project and involved. Show could still be shit but it could still be shit even with writers from the games.

Also games have way less dialogue than a TV show. The main story points will be there still
