Hated Tropes [HATED] Adaptations done intentionally without help from the source

Halo TV show: Before the show came out, the writers were praising their decision to not look to the games for inspiration when making the show

God Of War TV show: Chris Judge, the actor of Kratos in the games from 2018-Now, spoke up about his dislike on the show not hiring anyone who worked on any of the previous games. One of the original creators of Kratos also spoke up about them not having faith in the adaptation.

Supergirl 2026 film: the director for the film not only said he decided to not read Woman Of Tomorrow, the comic the film is adapting, because he wanted to do his own thing, he also didn’t look at comic art for inspiration to design Lobo and instead used an AI image generator to design Lobo’s look for the film

Where are the successful adaptations in the streaming era?

Fallout. Last of Us. One Piece. Twisted Metal. Lanterns. Reacher.

I'll give you Reacher. I think it's an easier IP to do well, but I'll give them credit. It's a great show.

I'm not familiar enough with Twisted Metal or One Piece to know how successful they actually are. My One Piece friends have had mixed reactions, but the ratings seem decent. I'll take your word for it that they're good.

The Last Of Us fell off pretty hard in season 2, as many adaptations do. The first season was rated an 8.7 on IMDB and the second season fell all the way to a 7.3. I don't know if I can call that a success yet. Especially when something like The Witcher was still rated in the 8s through two seasons and then cratered to the 5s and 4s afterwards.

I'm not sure I give Fallout full credit for being an adaptation. It's essentially only taking the setting. The characters and story are original, and that gives a lot more leeway.

Lanterns has ONE released episode. We're calling that successful already?

God of War hasn’t even filmed and you’re calling it a soulless disaster.

I’m saying I don’t have faith that it will be good because the track record for streaming adaptations isn’t good. Especially fantasy adaptations.
