miscellaneous [Interesting Trope] Attempts at fanservice/virality that failed not because they were hated, but because nobody noticed them or cared at all.

1) Hoopy the Hoop, Portal (2007) When you defeat GLaDOS and her room is destroyed at the end of the game, debris rains down in the final cutscene, including a big metal hoop that bounces around a bit. Developer Erik Wolpaw said the team dubbed it "Hoopy the Hoop" and expected it to become the big meme of Portal. Of course, none of the fans paid much attention to the hoop since "The Cake is a Lie" became the biggest meme of the game, and overall one of the biggest video game memes of all time.

2) Burgh, Pokemon Black and White (2010) When designing Burgh, developer Yusuke Ohmura said Gamefreak had many of their female employees give input on his design to create their ideal handsome man. However, as someone who's been in the Pokemon fandom for almost 3 decades, in the 15+ years since Pokemon Black and White released, I have personally never seen any fans swoon over Burgh, or even mention him in general. If anything, characters like N and Colress are far more well-known within the fandom as the most handsome and beloved male characters of Pokemon Gen 5.

The Xbox 360 was often called “The 360”. Microsoft execs thought the naming convention would carry over for its next console, the Xbox One. Nobody has ever called it “The One”, we’re not in the Matrix. Everybody called it “X-bone”.

I remember thinking, “Dang. That’s a much worse name than the 360, and now I have to be extra clear when I’m talking about the first X-Box.”

Microsoft said, “Don’t worry. The next one will be named even worse.”

Fr. I genuinely have no idea what the current iteration of the Xbox is even called. Microsoft has shat the bed so hard with its names for the Xbox consoles.

They call it "Xbox Series", because there's the X and the S and saying both is too clunky. Similarly stupid because it sounds like an esports event rather than a console.

I always say "the OG Xbox" because Microsoft is dumb.

Microsoft are lucky the 360 was so widely loved tbh because everyone thought that name was stupid AF at first.

We all got used to the wii. But that sounded like such an incredibly stupid name when it was announced

Wii U Wii U Wii U Wii U, here comes the ambulance.

I remember a VG Cats comic where Michael Jackson was like "Come on kids, grab your Wiis and swing them around!".

Especially to French people

Imagine : "we're the unveiling our brand new console : the yesss"

We all got used to the wii.

Who's "we?" I still hate it. Then of course they topped it with Wii U and I couldn't take that seriously at all. Granted I wasn't much interested in Nintendo anymore already, I only dabbled with the Wii a little bit, but there was no chance in hell I was going to spend money on anything called "Wii U." To this day, I don't even know what one looks like.

I'll never understand how the Wii got so popular. Every game Wii I've ever tried playing makes me want to smash the stupid little controllers apart because of the poorly implemented motion controls.

3

u/Gaelic_Gladiator41 17d ago

Because it was the first console to do motion controls in that way

IIRC, the decided to call it the Xbox 360 instead of the 2 over fears people would compare it to or confuse it with the PS2

Yeah it was competing with the PS3 and they wanted to avoid that one time a fast food place made a 1/3 pounder to compete with McDonald's 1/4 pounder but it never sold well because 3 is smaller than 4 right?

They call it the 360 because when you see it, you turn 360 degrees and walk away.

17

u/RealityOk9823 18d ago

That'd put you right back to facing it.

13

u/55cHzDARKSTAR 18d ago

Yeah, and then you walk away.

7

u/amazingkillerlemon 18d ago

I always hated that meme. 360° is a full circle. You're walking towards it. You would turn 180° to go away from it!

10

u/Lunalatic 18d ago

What if you moonwalked away from it? What then?

6

u/defecation69 18d ago

Yeah that’s…the joke part of the meme dude

4

u/I-Love-Floormats 18d ago

Uhhhhh, that's not how 360 degrees works...

Thank god they learned a valuable lesson on using confusing stupid AF names for their consoles.

My favourite part of this was that it was nicknamed the XBone before the announcement was even over, the people watching it live IMMEDIATELY recognised that Xbox One was an awful name.

Microsoft was insane naming their newer consoles.

Why is the Xbox One X a different product than the Xbox One Series X.

Who on god's green earth thought that naming convention was acceptable!?

4

u/Sea-Writer-6961 18d ago

That's the trick, nobody at Microsoft has ever known what they're doing

2

u/notTheRealSU 17d ago

It's the Xbox Series X, they dropped the "One", it's just the Xbox Series.

1

u/MisogynysticFeminist 17d ago

And the Xbox One is also a completely different product. And none of those are the first Xbox, that was just called Xbox and everyone else called it Xbox 1 as soon as the Xbox 360 came out, which is the second Xbox.

11

u/Revolutionary_Ad9093 18d ago

They called the third xbox the xbox one, because go fuck yourself

6

u/RealityOk9823 18d ago

Now it's xbox one x sx series yyz one two s pineapple.

When I had an Xbox 360 and I heard they were making the next gen cosole, I thought an excellent name was the Xbox 720. I was a dumb kid. That being said, Xbox 720 would still have been better than the X-bone
