Lore Actors who suggested a change to their character’s design, personality, or lore because they thought the original script/concept was too lame

Lucius Malfoy (Harry Potter) - Jason Isaacs

The studio originally wanted him in a modern Muggle pinstripe suit with short hair. Isaacs thought that looked like a boring businessman rather than a powerful wizard. He demanded the long platinum wig, wizard robes, and personally added the snake-headed walking cane that conceals his wand.

The Thin Man (Charlie's Angels 2000) - Crispin Glover

In the original script, he was just a generic, chatty action movie villain. Glover thought his lines were incredibly cliché and boring, so he suggested cutting all of his dialogue. He turned the character into a completely silent, hair-sniffing creep, making him the most memorable part of the movie.

Count Dooku (Star Wars) - Christopher Lee: In Episode II, George Lucas originally scripted/choreographed Dooku to use a standard, straight lightsaber. As a real-world world-class fencer, Lee found the standard hilt design clumsy and "lame" for a master duelist. He convinced the team to give Dooku the curved hilt, completely changing the character's fighting style and lore to fit elegant, fencing-based Makashi forms.

Superman (Superman 2025) - David Corenswet Following Henry Cavill's trunkless suit, director James Gunn and DC Studios initially leaned toward a "no trunks" design for the reboot, fearing that the classic red briefs looked too outdated, silly, or hard to make look "cool." However, David Corenswet passionately advocated for the trunks. He argued that Superman shouldn't care about looking cool. Instead, the trunks are intentionally a little silly and theatrical — like a professional wrestler—making an immensely powerful alien look approachable and safe, ensuring that everyday citizens and kids wouldn't be afraid of him.

Leonard Nimoy came up with the Vulcan Nerve Pinch because he thought Spock should have a more elegant way of incapacitating foes than just punching them.

1.7k

u/RP_Throwaway3 16d ago

He also came up with the Vulcan salute.

794

u/blamordeganis 16d ago

I believe it is, or is very similar to, a gesture used in a particular Jewish blessing?

989

u/RP_Throwaway3 16d ago

It is, yes. Nimoy remembered it from his childhood and used it instead of the scripted embrace since he said an emotionless people like Vulcans would have a more emotionally detached greeting.

374

u/Morgn_Ladimore 16d ago

He really made that character his own. Nobody could have portrayed Spock like Nimoy did.

It was also from a part of a Jewish ceremony that he was supposed to have his eyes shut for, but looked anyway. So this secret hand symbol is probably the best known Jewish hand symbol on the planet.

In his 1975 autobiography I Am Not Spock, Nimoy wrote that he based it on the Jewish "Birkat kohanim", a priestly blessing performed by a Kohen with both hands, thumb to thumb in this same position, representing the Hebrew letter shin (ש), which has three upward strokes similar to the position of the thumb and fingers in the gesture. The letter Shin here stands for El Shaddai, meaning "Almighty (God)" and Shalom.

The letter Shin also represents Shekhinah, the feminine aspect of the Divine Presence. According to Jewish tradition, during the Priestly Blessing, the Shekhinah would shine through the windows formed by the priests' fingers. This is why it was traditionally forbidden for the congregation to look at the priests' hands during the ceremony; it was believed that seeing the Divine Presence directly could lead to blindness or spiritual overwhelm. Nimoy famously mentioned in interviews that as a child his grandfather took him to an Orthodox synagogue, where he peeked and saw the blessing performed and was impressed by it

I used to know a pretty nerdy, unassuming looking guy (although he was pure muscle under his scruffy, baggy clothes) who had trained to be a second dan black belt in martial arts (in my mind it was karate, but a quick google suggests taekwondo is more likely) while living in Japan for years.

We were in the bar one night after work and I made some cheeky remark in his direction, so he casually reached over and pinched the top of my trapezius muscle like this and squeezed.

He didn’t look like he was putting any effort in whatsoever but the pain was absolutely overpowering and I just sank to my knees, literally begging him to stop and please, please let go, while he just smirked at me, holding his pint in his other hand.

For a few seconds of this I was terrified that he’d maybe had too many pints to realise he was going too far or long before he completely fucked me up, but mercifully he released the ‘hold’ when he’d made his point.

The young me, who thought he was in pretty good shape and naturally fairly strong, learned a very important lesson about how very, very little that means against a guy with training, who knows what he’s doing.

u/brionneverysexy 16d ago

The wrestler Steve Blackman has a black belt in Taekwondo. He never made it big in the ring but he was somebody known to be a legit bad ass. The WWE did a weird take on UFC in the 90s called the Brawl for All which was a real fight not a shoot like normal wrestling. Blackman asked if kicks would be allowed. He explained his plan was to kick everyone in the knees until they couldn't stand up. The rest of the people involved said they wouldn't take part of it if kicks were allowed

In 'Mrs. Doubtfire', Pierce Brosnan's character was written as a typical evil step parent trope. Brosnan having a wonderful stepfather and being one himself didn't want to feed into the stereotype so he insisted the character be changed to the caring and attentive character we see on screen.

4.0k

u/shane0072 16d ago

The studio also wanted the parents to get back together but both actors put their foot down

2.2k

u/RP_Throwaway3 16d ago

It's ironic that the plot of the film is essentially triggered by a studio refusing to change based on what an actor wanted but the movie was made much better because the studio acquiesced to what the actors wanted.

945

u/FILTHBOT4000 16d ago

As a general rule, the creatives involved have much better instincts for what makes a good movie. Studios are largely run by morons. This is not always the case; there are plenty of times when eccentrics that are actors/writers/directors need a little reigning in, but by and large, it's the execs that shit things up.

147

u/stone500 16d ago

Ren and Stimpy always comes to mind. John K is a brilliant animator, but compare the original Nickelodeon series with Adult Party Cartoon and witness what happens when Nickelodeon execs weren't trying to put a leash on John K.

→ More replies (7)

u/croon 16d ago

I'll put it this way: Passionate eccentrics can produce bad movies, but studios can't drive a great movie.

I'd rather have the creative variance than forgettable slop, so I say give the creatives free reign.

Tobey Maguire asked the screenwriters of Spider-Man: No Way Home to keep the events of what happened after his trilogy as vague as possible.

doesnt he say he made it work with MJ? That's something

2.2k

u/RP_Throwaway3 16d ago

Yes, he does. But you'll notice he isn't wearing a wedding ring. Making it work could mean many different things.

1.4k

u/Aurora-Ouroboros- 16d ago

I also would think that most superheros (especially ones who use their hands as much as Spidey) would take off their wedding ring before getting into costume. Both to have one less thing to lose/identify them by, but also because wearing a ring during vigorous activity can cause gnarly injuries

Not saying that for sure he and MJ are married because, as you say, making it work could mean many things

Matt LeBlanc as Joey (Friends)

While he is still a womanizer within the show proper, the original concept had him be a lot edgier and sleazier, which he pointed out made the fact that Phoebe, Rachel and Monica all willingly hang around him seem unrealistic. Joey's character was instead changed to be a lot nicer, emphasising that for all his sleeping around he's an extremely loyal friend

u/TandrDregn 16d ago

Yeah, I think going from “sleazy perv” to “horny but loyal himbo” was a good choice.

Then he turns to Ross and says "don't let her drink anymore!" and just walks out. I was so relieved

A similarish thing happened with the writers originally planning on having Chandler cheat on Monica, but Matthew Perry refused to do it as he didn't want to become hated.

158

u/Min_sora 16d ago

Genuinely mad that they were going to do that. Even with Ross, he had the wiggle room of them 'being on a break' and him thinking they were broken up - so you could argue that it was hurtful, but not *actually* cheating, so it gave him leniency. Having one of them straight-up cheat is nuts.

I doubt he considered this. But purple is actually a very interesting color in terms of the lightwave / light sabre. It's often not one wave length, like most other colors. Red, blue, green are all very specific ranges of wave lengths.

Purple is a combination of the shortest and longest wavelengths we can see with our eyes (short = violet going into ultraviolet. Long = red going into infrared). So you don't actually know how fast the lightwaves oscillate from looking at it. Which does make a difference in how precise the laser cuts. ...by like a few nanometers. In practice it wouldn't matter to the story.

Though I do like thinking of Windu / Jackson as having chosen this color specifically because it makes him less predictable. Which... I guess is true not just on a scientific level. "But I want purple" is not the most predictable thing to ask^^

Amusingly, EU works such as games, comics, and even merch had already shown Mace Windu with a blue lightsaber. So they came up with the retcon of the Jedi having a tradition called "Concordance of Fealty" to explain that he had exchanged lightsabers with someone else for a bit.

Alan Rickman in Robin Hood rewrote most of his dialogue after he found the script terrible and that gotten him a reward.

Iirc, he hated the dialogue so much he invited a bunch of actor/writer friends to a diner and they spent a few hours just rewriting his entire dialogue because it was genuinely so shit that it physically pissed him off.

So he played a comically evil SoB with some banging lines. Which worked. It added entertainment to the movie, with him being the most quoted character. Maybe even the solely quoted character of the movie.

In the original script for Devil May Cry 5, Vergil's reaction to learning that Nero is his son was going to be something along the lines of "you're not the only one that had fun" to Dante, implying he slept around and it wasn't too unexpected.

Dan Southworth however disagreed with this idea, as he believed that Vergil is the sort of person that would only get "entangled" with someone if he felt a strong connection with them. So Dan changed the line to the much more wistful "Well, well... That was a long time ago" which changes Vergil's response so he's now reminiscing about Nero's mum, making it seem like he had genuine feelings for her, and also implies he only ever got down with a single person.

356

u/Gairsh 16d ago

I had no idea, thank you Dan for being such a goat and give us a much better line

635

u/WeekendParticular205 16d ago

That's definitely something a fan would do. Vergil's character has always been a no nonsense one. It doesn't make sense for him to have 'fun' when he's so fixated on power, unintentionally falling in love tho that does seem possible and funnily resembles sparda.

131

u/Martoogh 16d ago

And also show the human side of him that he tries to repress

241

u/Thray_Walsh 16d ago

Plus the original line implies that Dante has actually had sex, so I appreciate the change on that account.

83

u/ArcaneMadman 16d ago

Damn thats cool.

Ugh, why dont we have another dmc game coming. One of my all time favorite series of games. Each one being wacky, balls to the wall crazy yet somehow bring it home with some surprisingly heartwarming and dramatic moments. You never expect a game that has a girl flying through the air with a rocket launcher bigger than her or a guy killing people with motorcycle boxing gloves to have a good story, but they always do.

(I pretend the second one doesnt exist if you cant tell lol)

72

u/ArcaneMadman 16d ago

The reason we don't have a new game is simple, Itsuno and his team were working on Dragons Dogma 2 for years after DMC5 and after finishing it Itsuno didn't want to spend the rest of his career doing sequels so he left Capcom.

Right now it's clear that Capcom wants more DMC, hell DMC5 is their best selling game that isn't Resident Evil or Monster Hunter, but logistically they don't have the people in place to make it. Right now they need to build up a suitable team that can take up the series and keep up the quality of the past games, and that takes time. Considering that DMC5 started production in 2015 and took four years to release, and Itsuno left Capcom just two years ago, I'd say we're still at least 3 years from the next game. Even then it's hard to say if it'll be a new game, a remake, a spinoff, or whatever.

The Dark Knight- it’s a tiny detail but it illustrates how much thought he put into the role, Heath Ledger said that the Joker should have some grease paint on his fingers because he would be painting his own face

Blade- the line “Some motherfuckers always tryin’ to ice skate up hill” was something Wesley Snipes actually said on set that the director decided was such a good line that he had it put into the script, and it’s possibly the best line in the Best Blade movie

57

u/SecondhandStatic 16d ago

Y'all must be young because Heath Ledger's Joker was in the public's consciousness for years and everyone talked about how much creative effort went into that character. Nolan gave Ledger full creative control and he made this iconic character from scratch. All the ideas, mannerisms, and most of the dialogue came from Ledger.

So it's not just one "tiny detail," it was everything and it was a huge deal at the time.

Leon - The Professional

Jean Reno took one look at Luc Besson's blatantly pedophilic original vision for Leon and Mathilda's relationship, saw that Natalie Portman's parents signed off on it and decided he had to advocate for Natalie. He recharacterized Leon as slow, detached and incapable of pursuing romantic relationships. Reno basically inched the filmmaker's vision away the original plan slowly and doing so without Besson getting frustrated and simply firing Reno and finding someone who won't complain about the original plans. The director's cut is rough, but it could have been so much worse if Reno hadn't stepped up.

908

u/ZeistyZeistgeist 16d ago

It is important to note that Reno and Besson have been long time colleagues and Reno starred in multiple Besson projects in the 80s before he got casted as Leon, and as such, Reno had enough creative control over his role, and like you said, he glacially steered his character into the Leon we know today because Besson was making his own semi-autobiographical pedo fantasy and Natalie's parents had 0 issues with it - so he was genuindly trying to protect Natalie as much as he could during filming.

That being said, while there was never a public report of Besson and Reno having a falling out nor is it known if that ever occured, and it could be argued that Reno simply sought other projects after getting international recognition from the role, two things should be mentioned; One, Jean Reno never worked with Besson again, even when Reno was also filming French domestic movies, and Two, he and Natalie are still friends to this day - not close friends, but Natalie even introduced her own children to Reno on a vacation to Jean's home - maybe this is reading between the lines, but I like to believe that Reno was so disgusted with Besson that he tactifully ended their professional relationship on purpose.

327

u/ProfessionalTruck976 16d ago

I think he just figured it is beneath him to feed tabloids with story of "old friends falling out" his actions speak loud enough

124

u/Lawlcopt0r 16d ago

Yeah that can't be a coincidence, he probably had some realizations about Besson he couldn't move past

161

That would be Jean Reno and Gary Oldman who between the two of them determined that Besson shouldn't be left alone with Natalie Portman, so one of them was always near by.

Vin Diesel came up with this scene in Pitch Black and in the Butcher Bay video game, he requested Riddick to have less lines and it turned out great. Vin Diesel genuinely gives a shit about the character Riddick so much that he used his Fast and Furious money to buy the rights to Riddick and is currently filming the fourth film.

Another one for the legend Alan Rickman. Apparently he was the one that suggested that it didn’t make sense for his Die Hard character (Hans Gruber) to be wearing tactical gear because he had others around to do the dirty work. He suggested that Hans be wearing an expensive suit and that they write in an encounter where Bruce Willis’ character mistakes Hans for a hostage. Can’t imagine it having been any other way.

Chadwick Boseman as Black Panther: the original direction was for T’Challa to have a posh British accent to reflect his wealthy & educated upbringing. Boseman instead fought for African accented English, as Wakanda would never have been colonized. It became an iconic part of his characterization and now even on the toddler-level Spider-Man show my kid watches T’Challa has his African accent. (Makes me really happy every time I hear it on the cartoon; I love that it’s part of his legacy with the character.)

299

u/CloverThyme 16d ago

That's such a weird directing choice... I have not read a lot of comics, so I'm not sure if the British accent has any sort of precedence there. However, aside from the films, the other main piece of Marvel media that I have seen T'Challa in was the animated show, Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes. That show predated the films by years and T'Challa certainly had a (non-specific) African accent in it. I think the same is true for the sequel show Avengers Assemble.

Marvel having an established sound for him and then initially trying to backtrack it is odd. I also think the apparent underlying thought process of "refined, intelligent, wealthy = British" is... not great. Especially for a character like T'Challa and what he is intended to represent. I'm glad Chadwick pushed back.

66

u/dankristy 16d ago

Unfortunately, as a white person who grew up in the Bay area (and specifically Oakland, Vallejo), there is a VERY real bias among some (often white but not always) people that an accent that sounds "ethnic" always sounds less intelligent than proper English, and that "British English accent" is the take it to 11 version of this.

I can assure you that some of the smartest people I have spoken with have some VERY different accents and dialects to mine - and I loved the choice they made in Black Panther to keep Wakanda sounding African, but also distinguished and educated at the same time.

I think the real root problem - is that doing this was work. Whereas using a stupid fake posh English accent to underline "these people are smart" is lazy - which is why the lazy version often gets done instead. I will take new and interesting over lazy stereotyped easy path every time.

66

u/big_sugi 16d ago

A British accent might make sense if T’Challa had been sent to a British boarding school, which is common for wealthy scions all over the world. But afaik, T’Challa didn’t go to England until enrolling at Oxford, so his accent would already have been set.

Harrison Ford as Han Solo (Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back): The script originally had Han Solo respond to Princess Leia’s "I love you" with a standard, scripted line: "I love you, too." Ford felt the line was far too sappy, generic, and completely out of character for a cynical, smooth-talking space smuggler. He convinced director Irvin Kershner to change it on the day of filming, delivering the iconic, ruggedly confident response: "I know."

Benecio del Toro in The Usual Suspects. He correctly identified his character as the throwaway of the group and added the incoherent accent.

117

u/EndlessKng 16d ago

He alledgedly inadvertently made the lineup scene better too. The script called for it to be completely played straight. However, per Kevin Pollak, Del Toro had some rancid gas that contributed to everyone cracking up. Ultimately, Singer just embraced the chaos and used the outtakes in the final film, which made the scene work better overall by showing the suspects as largely uncovered by the cops and giving them a stronger chemistry.

It's the thing Snyder got wrong with his supes.

Superman is the beacon of and for humanity. He is completely aware of how everyone looks to him, and how in their moments of despair he is the hope they cling to. He doesn't become "sadboy" snd shrug his shoulders at people.

Clark Kent is a normal dude and that's when we can see him being emotional and unsure. But Superman is near always on point. That is the burden Clark puts on himself.

Peter Stormare as Lucifer in Constantine.

He was originally supposed to wear a black metal head/biker (maybe a bit Hellraiser-y) inspired outfit but Stormare successfully fought to have him wear this white suit and black tar dripping from his feet. This worked SO much better and fits Lucifer’s charisma and his original function as an archangel. His performance is many people favorite depiction of the Devil in modern cinema. Dude straight up stole the movie in the best way.

119

u/mothyyy 16d ago

He definitely gave off a vibe that this wasn't his true form, and that this was as "clean" as he could make himself look. Of course, he is a fallen angel so maybe that really was his true form.

But on that topic, I loved Tilda's outfit at the end too. She wore multiple hospital ID wristbands and what looked like the pants from a straightjacket. It was a fitting mockery of where they were, thus emphasizing her character's madness. I guess it's possible the wristbands were trophies, who knows.

58

u/polllyrolly 16d ago

The black tar dripping from his feet is a direct lift from “Dangerous Habits”, the arc of Hellblazer that served as source material for the cancer plotline in Constantine.

Not an actor thing at all, but this reminds of the Marvel character Death's Head.

He was originally just going to be a generic, bland bounty hunter who would show up for like 2 issues of the UK version of Marvel's Transformers comic, but the artist came in with a design so good the writer went back and rewrote the issue to give him a personality people would want to see more of just to get an excuse to use the design more.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned it yet (or someone has and I just haven't seen it) but Guy Gardner's bowl cut! Same reason as the red trunks, Gunn and DC Studios thought it'd be too silly or outdated. However, Nathan Fillion really pushed for the bowl cut, famously saying to the production team that if they didn't do a bowl cut, they'll be hearing about it.

According to her voice actress Grace in Resident Evil Requiem was supposed to be a female Leon in the making cracking one liners like an traditional action hero but her voice actress instead suggested that Grace continue to be meek and nervous since Grace, not being a field agent, realistically doesn't have the training and experiences to get over long standing emotional issues and nervous traits just because she killed a zombie. She recommended that for these moments Grace instead starts talking to herself to reassure herself like a real person under this amount of stress would do

It was honestly a really good decision as Grace is arguably one of the most realistic Resident Evil characters ever made and her growth is more believable than other characters who after a run in with a couple zombies suddenly became confident enough to try be action movie heroes

Wilson Bethel as Benjamin Poindexter / Bullseye (Daredevil): In early script stages, Bullseye risked becoming a generic, cartoonish psychopath with an immediate villain suit. Bethel didn't like Bullseye being a standard one-dimensional villain, and pushed heavily to anchor the character in a tragic, deeply psychological backstory. He focused intensely on Dex having fractured mental health, his desperate need for structure, and emphasized turning the potentially one-dimensional comic book antagonist into a deeply sympathetic, complex figure before his eventual descent into villainy so that the character would be more "interesting" to viewers.

Colin say:
