Hated Tropes Stupid Contrived Survival Stories

  1. 12 Feet Deep - Two idiots decide they absolutely positively MUST go swimming in a pool after it's closed. An incredibly contrived sequence of events happens so they get stuck in a pool. So the movie can happen.

  2. Frozen (not that one) - Three idiots decide they absolutely positively MUST get on a ski-lift after it's closed. To the point of bribing the operator who for some stupid reason doesn't say anything. Do the movie can happen. Also, Wolves are not that aggressive. They are typically shy and avoid humans.

  3. 47 Meters Down- Arguably the most believable scenario on this list. It's still really stupid.

  4. Fall- Two idiots decide to climb an abandoned radio tower without proper equipment that would make escaping their predicament trivially easy. Stop me if you've heard this one before

so the movie can happen.

The Pool (2018 Thai movie)

The film revolves around a couple who is trapped in a 6 meter deep pool after the water is drained out. Their situation worsens when a crocodile enters the pool with them.

u/BrozedDrake 16d ago

Who the fuck designs a pool that people can't get out of when it's drained? How do they expect it to get cleaned?

2.5k

u/jaggervalance 16d ago

The crocodile usually cleans it.

the croc workforce is really bad these days but it DOES exist. poor dude is just trying to make a living in this economy.

23

u/semimillennial 16d ago

They have trouble bargaining for better pay because no one respects their crocodile tears

20

u/Chickenmangoboom 16d ago

Poor dude was probably mad because someone put a chair in the pool and now he has to break it into pieces to get in the through the hatch. It's annoying and a waste of what looks like a perfectly good chair.

u/Budsygus 16d ago

No one wants to work anymore! Crocs included!

1

u/SecretSharkboy 11d ago

And the worst part is you have bigots talking about "the gators are stealing jobs" but its not like theyre gonna do them

11

u/SlAM133 16d ago

Can’t expect him to work on an empty stomach

2

u/Vismal1 15d ago

Ohhhj that’s what they’re for!

1

u/Countsmegula 15d ago

Then how does the crocodile get out?

322

u/Sonnydoubleu 16d ago

They spent too much time working on the crocodile chamber, so they ran out of budget for steps or a ladder

11

u/Saint_of_Grey 16d ago

They had to sell it to pay for the croc, clearly.

Me in The Sims

That grave yard isn't going to fill itself.

The Goth family lived up to their name.

u/MiserableMemory5149 16d ago

Happened to my uncle, actually. In ground pool, with a deeper end, and a shallow end with a ladder out.

There was a slope going from the deep to shallow end, but the bottom was too slippery to actually climb it. Cousins had to throw him a rope to assist.

165

u/JMer806 16d ago

lol this also happened to my dad. He was painting the bottom of a pool and accidentally painted himself into the deep end. The paint was too slick for him to walk out so he had to army crawl out because the ladders were too high for him to reach. His clothes and the fresh paint were ruined

36

u/Cautious-Sun6494 16d ago

I would have had someone toss me a beer and stood there until the paint dried.

44

u/JMer806 16d ago

The best part is that one of his friends happened to come by right as he was getting out. If he had just waited like five minutes, someone could’ve easily helped him out 😂

20

u/ChrdeMcDnnis 16d ago

This is why commercial pools typically have concrete basins, tiled or plastic basins are just begging for trouble at any step of operation.

4

u/StellarNeonJellyfish 16d ago

Yeah but if you’re in the pool a lot your finger and toe pads get chaffed

3

u/ron2838 16d ago

Blood blisters were a way of life with a concrete pool growing up.

2

u/QazCetelic 16d ago

And who threw the crocodile in? Also your cousin?

47

u/Slow_Bowler8285 16d ago

50

u/BrozedDrake 16d ago

Yes most pools have ladders installed in them

14

u/Sad-Pattern-1269 16d ago

Pools have ladders built into the side so you don't accidentally get trapped in there

4

u/MichealRyder 16d ago

Why he thicc

3

u/m4cksfx 15d ago

That's the muscle used most for going up a ladder. It's the only thing he does, sooo. It follows.

8

u/Leagle_Egal 16d ago

I saw the movie ages ago so my memory is foggy, but if I recall the pool was being used for a fashion photo shoot. I think they removed the ladders because they were in the way of the shots. The protag is an idiot because while everyone else was smart enough to GTFO, he decided to take a nap on a pool floatie WHILE THE POOL IS BEING DRAINED, assuming he would wake in time to hop out. Gf is an idiot because she arrived later when the water was already super low and jumped in without looking.

10

u/mayor_procrastinator 16d ago

Same guy that make this pool all deep end

7

u/marshal23156 16d ago

Well there is a ladder nearby, but our hero conveniently is asleep for the first 6 feet of pool drainage. His girlfriend comes because hes not answering the phone, and rather than ask “hey why is the pool half empty?” She jumps in with him. Also, the man had his dog with him, tied to a lead. Said dog attempts to join his owner in the pool.

It was a really really bad movie all around.

1

u/Right_Pen_3241 15d ago

I was laughing at every step of the madness of that thing! Glorious! 😂

2

u/DaRootbear 16d ago

Im pretty sure that was an actual gag in Archer

1

u/FuckUSAPolitics 16d ago

They're called professional diving wells. They're typically used for athletes, not recreational activities.

1

u/PlagueOfLaughter 16d ago

The pool I swim in weekly is somewhat the same. If it completely drained with me in it, it'll take quite some effort to get out. I'll have to jump against the wall and grab the ladder etc. It's doable, I suppose.

1

u/IShouldbeNoirPI 16d ago

Sims players?

1

u/calvicstaff 15d ago

This movie brought to you by, the Sims

1

u/SagaSolejma 15d ago

Yknow unironically, thinking about it now, i think ive seen at least a couple pools you probably wouldnt be able to get out of if it got drained

1

u/Interesting-Work2755 15d ago

French, apparently. Have you seen A Good Year?

1

u/mrcachorro 12d ago

Happens to the guys in its always sunny, good thing is they do some sick ass karate moves.

1

u/wolfA856 11d ago

Flashback to the Sims

1

u/Shinard 10d ago

Iirc the ladder broke, but I might be wrong, it's been years since I saw it.

1

u/housevil 9d ago

I see you have never played The Sims.

1

u/ecbulldog 16d ago

A ladder. For residential pools with a vinyl liner, the only time its empty is if the liner is getting changed. You just drain it below the returns and blow them out for the winter. My pool is 18x36 feet with an 8.5 foot deep end. I don't think I'd be able to climb up a vinyl covered slope from the deep end if it was fully drained.

1

u/BrozedDrake 16d ago

8.5 foot deep end

And how deep is the shallow end?

0

u/ecbulldog 16d ago

3.5ish, but you aren't getting up the slope to even make it there from the deep end if its empty.

1

u/BrozedDrake 16d ago

Unless it's a shear drop yes you can.

1

u/ecbulldog 16d ago

Its a 33% grade dude.

u/The_GREAT_Gremlin 16d ago

Bro left out the most important sentence of the Wikipedia description

234

u/WillemDafoesHugeCock 16d ago

How did the couple know the crocodile's reviews?

66

u/KatzOfficial 16d ago

RateMyCrocfessor

11

u/ReversedValz 16d ago

Well they were the only two reviewers so I guess there was consensus

3

u/artaru 15d ago

I think Crocs are just popular in general in Thailand.

47

u/Stsveins 16d ago

I mean the crocodile did nothing wrong, he was just trapped in there with a couple of meals on legs.

What was he suppose to do, starve?

66

u/Slow_Bowler8285 16d ago

Spoiler Alert

21

u/bellehoneycreeper 16d ago

In the movie’s defense, it’s an absolute blast

196

u/SlapHappyDude 16d ago

That sounds like someone was inspired by removing the ladder from pools in The Sims

3

u/Shipbreaker_Kurpo 16d ago

Bitch don't you touch my ladder

2

u/SlapHappyDude 15d ago

What ladder? There was never any ladder.

2

u/Shipbreaker_Kurpo 15d ago

this chains fake as shit

2

u/CKRatKing 15d ago

What this situation needs is a front flip, now if you needed a backflip I could do that all day.

You've never flipped in your life!

1

u/hemlo86 15d ago

First thing that came to mind glad someone else also thought it too! 😂

121

u/EnderBookwyrm 16d ago

Why would they build a pool that deep without a way to climb out?

Actually, why would they build a pool that deep at all? Is this for astronaut or diver training?

137

u/Slow_Bowler8285 16d ago

To quote comedian Ryan George from the Pitch Meeting youtube videos

https://giphy.com/gifs/KeQ2H0sBYeQEwj0fWZ

"so the movie can happen"

14

u/jamesxgames 16d ago

wow wow wowwowwow... wow

14

u/corvettee01 16d ago

Bad swimming pool construction is tight!

24

u/Xonarag 16d ago

6 meters isn't that deep. My local small swimming pool has like 4m depth so 6 meter in a bigger one as a gimmick seems feasible.

8

u/thewilybanana 16d ago

Yours probably has a shallow end though.

Edit come to think of it, I don't think I've been in a pool without a shallow end. Definitely been in ones without a deep end though

16

u/Redcoat_Officer 16d ago

A lot of competition pools don't have a shallow end, or they have a movable shallow end that can be lowered down to make the whole pool consistently deep. Still, that's like 2.5 metres deep at most.

7

u/mrgoboom 16d ago

Local pool was once used for the Commonwealth Games. It has a dive tank that goes 4.5 m deep. There is no shallow end.

1

u/altymcalty-2 16d ago

Probably to save money.

Also some civilian pools are just really deep

20

u/AccordianSpeaker 16d ago

Didn't this happen to Mac and Charlie in It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia?

8

u/Reaper-Lord69 16d ago

Sure did. I don't think they had to deal with a croc tho

9

u/InkFazkitty 16d ago

And this all happens so..? Come on, say the line.

11

u/under_the_c 16d ago

Sigh... so the movie can happen

22

u/avanti8 16d ago

So that's going on my watchlist.

11

u/Mirgss 16d ago

100%

21

u/Ok-Teaching5866 16d ago

The way they get out of the pool lowkey the worst thing I've ever seen. Like girl, im traumatized

3

u/Healthy-Strategy3011 16d ago

What happened again

Pretty sure it worked and he didn't convince his dog, as I remember it, the croc steped on the dogs squeaky toy, or something. The dog jumped as he said no.

Again I could be wrong, this was pre covid days, and those days are a blur now.

1

u/Reaper-Lord69 16d ago

...... Damn

1

u/m4cksfx 15d ago

So, how? Sounds gory, but I can't even think of a way which would help in this situation?...

6

u/jerrymatcat 16d ago

I saw a video about this film a few years ago but the guy was litterly told to get out of the pool before it drained too much but he fell asleep and then his partner thought it would be funny to jump in while he was sleeping pretty easily avoidable

7

u/_Sausage_fingers 16d ago

Ok, this might be a must see

6

u/FromTheIsland 16d ago

Why is the pool even directly connected to a sewer pipe.

3

u/Slow_Bowler8285 16d ago

So the movie can happen

5

u/thanous-m 16d ago

I remember this episode of Sunny

4

u/californiadeath 16d ago

This is an episode of always sunny

3

u/Monster_Fucker_420 16d ago

omg ive been looking for this movie

3

u/Longjumping-Buy-3434 16d ago

Bingo: “I’m never getting out of this— AAAHHH!!!”

3

u/oh--- 16d ago

Did they try to backflip?

3

u/SuffocatingDensity 16d ago

That sounds fucking awesome

2

u/DOGPISSCURESCANCER 16d ago

Just need a skateboard and you’re good

4

u/buttercuping 16d ago

One of the worst, edgiest, most unnecessary dog deaths in the history of cinema. Fuck this movie.

1

u/Starwatcher4116 16d ago

Are they Sims characters?

1

u/thewokelerbaby 16d ago

They really just stole that one plot from It's Always Sunny with Mac and Charlie

1

u/theotaku0503 16d ago

Once my dad put this on TV while I was chilling in the living room. This is a certifired comedy for how asburdly stupid it is

1

u/Assinine3716 15d ago

They should swap pants so the guy can backflip right out of the pool

1

u/Canon_M50 15d ago

uhhh based????

1

u/edgiepower 15d ago

For a sec I thought that crocodile had wheels for back legs

1

u/Heckle_Jeckle 15d ago

OK, this got a smile out of me and now I almost want to see it.

1

u/ZeroiaSD 10d ago

Amazing!

1

u/Shinard 10d ago

I don't remember there being a couple, I thought it was just the one guy. Unless I watched a different Thai movie called the Pool with a guy stuck in a pool with a crocodile, or I'm misremembering.

1

u/ToonMasterRace 16d ago

Always sunny episode with this same plot
