Hated Tropes Stupid Contrived Survival Stories

  1. 12 Feet Deep - Two idiots decide they absolutely positively MUST go swimming in a pool after it's closed. An incredibly contrived sequence of events happens so they get stuck in a pool. So the movie can happen.

  2. Frozen (not that one) - Three idiots decide they absolutely positively MUST get on a ski-lift after it's closed. To the point of bribing the operator who for some stupid reason doesn't say anything. Do the movie can happen. Also, Wolves are not that aggressive. They are typically shy and avoid humans.

  3. 47 Meters Down- Arguably the most believable scenario on this list. It's still really stupid.

  4. Fall- Two idiots decide to climb an abandoned radio tower without proper equipment that would make escaping their predicament trivially easy. Stop me if you've heard this one before

so the movie can happen.

The Pool (2018 Thai movie)

The film revolves around a couple who is trapped in a 6 meter deep pool after the water is drained out. Their situation worsens when a crocodile enters the pool with them.

Who the fuck designs a pool that people can't get out of when it's drained? How do they expect it to get cleaned?

The crocodile usually cleans it.

the croc workforce is really bad these days but it DOES exist. poor dude is just trying to make a living in this economy.

u/semimillennial 16d ago

They have trouble bargaining for better pay because no one respects their crocodile tears

Poor dude was probably mad because someone put a chair in the pool and now he has to break it into pieces to get in the through the hatch. It's annoying and a waste of what looks like a perfectly good chair.

No one wants to work anymore! Crocs included!

And the worst part is you have bigots talking about "the gators are stealing jobs" but its not like theyre gonna do them

Can’t expect him to work on an empty stomach

2

u/Vismal1 15d ago

Ohhhj that’s what they’re for!

u/Countsmegula 15d ago

Then how does the crocodile get out?

u/Sonnydoubleu 16d ago

They spent too much time working on the crocodile chamber, so they ran out of budget for steps or a ladder

u/Saint_of_Grey 16d ago

They had to sell it to pay for the croc, clearly.

That grave yard isn't going to fill itself.

The Goth family lived up to their name.

Happened to my uncle, actually. In ground pool, with a deeper end, and a shallow end with a ladder out.

There was a slope going from the deep to shallow end, but the bottom was too slippery to actually climb it. Cousins had to throw him a rope to assist.

lol this also happened to my dad. He was painting the bottom of a pool and accidentally painted himself into the deep end. The paint was too slick for him to walk out so he had to army crawl out because the ladders were too high for him to reach. His clothes and the fresh paint were ruined

I would have had someone toss me a beer and stood there until the paint dried.

The best part is that one of his friends happened to come by right as he was getting out. If he had just waited like five minutes, someone could’ve easily helped him out 😂

This is why commercial pools typically have concrete basins, tiled or plastic basins are just begging for trouble at any step of operation.

u/StellarNeonJellyfish 16d ago

Yeah but if you’re in the pool a lot your finger and toe pads get chaffed

3

u/ron2838 16d ago

Blood blisters were a way of life with a concrete pool growing up.

2

u/QazCetelic 16d ago

And who threw the crocodile in? Also your cousin?

u/BrozedDrake 16d ago

Yes most pools have ladders installed in them

15

u/Sad-Pattern-1269 16d ago

Pools have ladders built into the side so you don't accidentally get trapped in there

3

u/MichealRyder 15d ago

Why he thicc

3

u/m4cksfx 15d ago

That's the muscle used most for going up a ladder. It's the only thing he does, sooo. It follows.

I saw the movie ages ago so my memory is foggy, but if I recall the pool was being used for a fashion photo shoot. I think they removed the ladders because they were in the way of the shots. The protag is an idiot because while everyone else was smart enough to GTFO, he decided to take a nap on a pool floatie WHILE THE POOL IS BEING DRAINED, assuming he would wake in time to hop out. Gf is an idiot because she arrived later when the water was already super low and jumped in without looking.

Same guy that make this pool all deep end

4

u/marshal23156 16d ago

Well there is a ladder nearby, but our hero conveniently is asleep for the first 6 feet of pool drainage. His girlfriend comes because hes not answering the phone, and rather than ask “hey why is the pool half empty?” She jumps in with him. Also, the man had his dog with him, tied to a lead. Said dog attempts to join his owner in the pool.

It was a really really bad movie all around.

I was laughing at every step of the madness of that thing! Glorious! 😂

2

u/DaRootbear 16d ago

Im pretty sure that was an actual gag in Archer

u/FuckUSAPolitics 16d ago

They're called professional diving wells. They're typically used for athletes, not recreational activities.

1

u/PlagueOfLaughter 16d ago

The pool I swim in weekly is somewhat the same. If it completely drained with me in it, it'll take quite some effort to get out. I'll have to jump against the wall and grab the ladder etc. It's doable, I suppose.

Sims players?

1

u/calvicstaff 15d ago

This movie brought to you by, the Sims

1

u/SagaSolejma 15d ago

Yknow unironically, thinking about it now, i think ive seen at least a couple pools you probably wouldnt be able to get out of if it got drained

1

u/Interesting-Work2755 15d ago

French, apparently. Have you seen A Good Year?

1

u/mrcachorro 12d ago

Flashback to the Sims

1

u/Shinard 10d ago

Iirc the ladder broke, but I might be wrong, it's been years since I saw it.

1

u/housevil 9d ago

I see you have never played The Sims.

1

u/ecbulldog 16d ago

A ladder. For residential pools with a vinyl liner, the only time its empty is if the liner is getting changed. You just drain it below the returns and blow them out for the winter. My pool is 18x36 feet with an 8.5 foot deep end. I don't think I'd be able to climb up a vinyl covered slope from the deep end if it was fully drained.

1

u/BrozedDrake 16d ago

8.5 foot deep end

And how deep is the shallow end?

0

u/ecbulldog 16d ago

3.5ish, but you aren't getting up the slope to even make it there from the deep end if its empty.

1

u/BrozedDrake 16d ago

Unless it's a shear drop yes you can.

1

u/ecbulldog 16d ago

Its a 33% grade dude.
