Hated Tropes Stupid Contrived Survival Stories

  1. 12 Feet Deep - Two idiots decide they absolutely positively MUST go swimming in a pool after it's closed. An incredibly contrived sequence of events happens so they get stuck in a pool. So the movie can happen.

  2. Frozen (not that one) - Three idiots decide they absolutely positively MUST get on a ski-lift after it's closed. To the point of bribing the operator who for some stupid reason doesn't say anything. Do the movie can happen. Also, Wolves are not that aggressive. They are typically shy and avoid humans.

  3. 47 Meters Down- Arguably the most believable scenario on this list. It's still really stupid.

  4. Fall- Two idiots decide to climb an abandoned radio tower without proper equipment that would make escaping their predicament trivially easy. Stop me if you've heard this one before

so the movie can happen.

The accounts I saw, including from his family, say he was (reasonably) scared to go but went anyway because his dad wanted him to.

It’s a shame that anybody died, but it’s not their intent that killed them. It was getting to an unsafe submarine

Repeating what I said above, that info came from an estranged aunt who ran to the media before we even knew what became of the divers, who proceeded to write a book about it immediately after.

The mother said that she gave up her seat so her son, who loved the Titanic, really wanted to go. The son had even brought a Rubik's Cube with him because he wanted to set a record for fastest solve at the deepest depth. One of the documentaries about the disaster even shows his Titanic memorabilia, including a mounted Titanic LEGO display kit.

I'd also like to add that, while I would in no way say I think trusting this was a smart decision, the CEO lied his ass off about how safe it was and the whole venture was given an air of legitimacy by having a very famous Titanic expert, Paul-Henri Nargeolet, attending, which he had done before.

Yeah I had seen Christine’s interview and the aunts, and they seemed like they could both be true at the same time so I took them both at face value.

It is possible that Suleman was apprehensive but once his dad broached him with the idea he got over his fears and applied himself to the trip enthusiastically.

But ultimately we won’t know what was in his head

And yeah, they got lied to, but several other people rightly avoided Titan given its reputation and the guy I responded to seemed to think that getting on the sub made the other three passengers idiots, I was just pointing out that if you’re going to call them idiots, they all did the same thing.

I don't think there's really any reason to believe the aunt. She admits she was estranged from the family, but according to her she still spoke with Suleman, but has no real proof of it. We know her family was thrown out of the funeral/wake services (she was unable to travel iirc). The mother's version requires her having to move publically forward with the incredible personal guilt she must feel for giving up her seat for her son. There's plenty of signs of Suleman's enthusiasm and likelihood to be enthusiastic to go.

The fact that she ran to the media before we even knew what happened, the fact that she knew the mother would have been sitting there with the most awful news imaginable and decided to tell a salacious story about it speaks extremely poorly of her character.

All signs point to an opportunist cashing in on her 15 minutes.

Ok sure, but I think more to the point, so?

My point was that Suleman is as responsible for getting on the craft as anyone else. The aunt being wrong actually makes that point MORE evident.

Because I think it's important to clear up misinformation and/or understand the full picture.

EDIT: The user blocked me immediately after this, but to be clear, I was clarifying there's really no reason to believe the aunt. It wasn't a moral indictment, it was further information sharing to explain.

Buddy nothing I said contravenes your clearing it up with your first reply. I just explained why I had gone with a generous reading of both sources in the first place
