Hated Tropes An adaptation completely botches the original theme and message

Mulan(2020)-They give Mulan superpowers which is not only lame it goes against the message of the original about equality and struggle, plus they removes Shang because apparently having Mulan date her superior was "problematic" even though Shang genuienely respected Mulan and their rank was never brought up

I am Legend(2007)-You know why the story is called "I am legend"? SPOILER ALERT the protagonist is the actual monster, humanity is gone and the vampires have a actual society and the protagonist kills and terrorize them

Animal Farm(2026)-On the very slim chance that Andy Serkis ever sees this, here's the thing Andy,Animal Farm was not a children work it was not supposed to have a happy ending, you never heard of cautionary tales before?

The remake of The Stepford Wives.

The original is a chilling thriller about how men treat women. It's also a mystery, as we don't know what is happening to these women and experience it alongside the female protagonist as her friends change personalities and her husband grows more distant. It's a fantastic movie and I would recommend it to anyone.

The remake is a joke. Actually though - they tried to make it into a comedy for some unknown reason?? Every character is super rich and campy, they add in a gay couple which doesn't even make sense because it's about misogyny* (also all these crazy sexists are apparently fine with gay people), and in the end everything is instantly fixed and everyone is now happy since the main husband decides not to turn his wife into a slave so he's a hero, and the main villain isn't a misogynistic society, but one woman who wants everyone to be a tradwife.

I don't understand how you could misinterpret the original so badly.

Not to mention how the remake can't can't even decide if it wants to go with the original cyborg replicates or if the human-women are just being mind controlled. The 'changed' women can do things like be a literal atm or have their rubber hands melt if they leave them on the stove, but once the hero-husband flips a switch it turns out all the women only had chips put in their head and are now back to normal! Even the one who's hand melted??? I hate this movie so much.

As someone who hadn’t heard of the original when I watched the remake, I was so confused. It’s a jumbled mess and the original is so much better

The remake is a bit of a guilty pleasure movie for me but it's certainly not something I would consider to be a good or thoughtful movie. I really have to keep the two as separate entities in my mind

I haven't seen the original, and saw the remake long ago and remember nothing aside from thinking it seemed deeply confused about what it wanted to be about. Like someone hsd taken two or three script treatments each going in a different direction and shoved them in a blender.

I love how the remake ending can't even follow its own logic. Like if it takes Walter at least a minute to deprogramme one Wife how is he able to do them all at once, like he should have been stopped within 10 minutes once the first few malfunction happen. And if the wives have these monitoring stations that anyone can access why didn't the other stepford husbands notice that Joanna wasn't under their control, and if Claire murdered her husband for cheating on her why was Joanna able to distract him by flirting with him, wouldn't Claire program him to be completely faithful to her.

Yeah, it was all over the place. I used to kinda like the ending when it was revealed that the men would be next and the town was basically going to be Claire's "leave it to beaver" fantasy, but then I rewatched it a few years later and everything felt so one dimensional.

My mom showed the original to me when I was 13 and it was haunting. The remake really was a joke compared to it.

Yeah guess which version we had to watch for film class

I've only read the book and summaries of the awful Nicole Kidman version. Would love to see a modern adaptation with someone like Greta Gerwig at the helm. With the world of AI voices and the manosphere, it's almost believable now.

Isn't the original a satirical novel

Yeah, it's satirical, but it still has a strong horror theme bent to it.

It was basically written as a satire of the backlash against the second-wave feminist movement and the people complaining that the movement had gone too far. The idea being, what do you really want: an actual person who loves you or a wind-up doll who has no thoughts of her own?
