Hated Tropes An adaptation completely botches the original theme and message

Mulan(2020)-They give Mulan superpowers which is not only lame it goes against the message of the original about equality and struggle, plus they removes Shang because apparently having Mulan date her superior was "problematic" even though Shang genuienely respected Mulan and their rank was never brought up

I am Legend(2007)-You know why the story is called "I am legend"? SPOILER ALERT the protagonist is the actual monster, humanity is gone and the vampires have a actual society and the protagonist kills and terrorize them

Animal Farm(2026)-On the very slim chance that Andy Serkis ever sees this, here's the thing Andy,Animal Farm was not a children work it was not supposed to have a happy ending, you never heard of cautionary tales before?

I’m sorry I need to complain about Mulan as well - just because the original is one of my favorite movies and one of the best of the Disney Renaissance.

Mulan wasn’t a “princess” she was a HERO. She was brave and strong but more than that, she was CLEVER. She didn’t overpower her enemies, she outsmarted them. She was extremely competent and good at her job, not because she was the strongest but because she was really good at spotting her opponent’s weaknesses, and effectively taking advantage of them.

And Shang respected her as a solider way before he started to admire her as a woman. Reducing him to “love interest” really doesn’t do either of them justice. Their relationship was much more equitable and charming than that. I could imagine they actually LIKED each other, like, as people.

And it’s so funny that after she leaves, the Emperor basically tells Shang, “GO GET HER YOU IDIOT!” He knows ball haha 😆

Anyway Mulan is goated and deserves better then what it got

ALSO ALSO...the Chinese "phoenix", the Fenghuang, DOES NOT RISE FROM THE ASHES! That's Greek and Egyptian myth! If anything, her spirit animal should've been the Qilin!

The only Asians were the actors. Even the directors were a bunch of white people. Including the white New Zealander director.

It’s peak Alan Horn Era Disney to be like “we can do women or Asians but not BOTH!” Then hiring some of the most talented and charismatic Asian talent around to stand there while some oblivious white women make a story they aren’t really confident in but think if they just dress it up enough it’ll sell itself.

Say this much for “Kpop demon hunters”, it proved that the right person to make a movie about Asian women was probably an Asian woman.

For the live action Disney movies a lot of it feels like a bunch of white women saw cinema sins and wrote movies specifically in response to online discourse which makes the movies worse.

I don’t think I can think of any other live action Disney remakes that seemed like a woman ever looked at them. Just white guys with “focus group data”

Remember, Alan Horn fired James Gunn from the MCU because he fell for a Mike Cernovich psy-op. That’s also why Alan Horn isn’t with Disney anymore. He got tricked by Twitter Nazis. That should explain a lot about how this happened.

It seems each movie was made in response to each pointless online nitpick. Online beauty and beast is Stockholm syndrome. When in the movie she just realized the beast isn't a monster through empathy. In live action it over corrects and makes the movie message less powerful.

In lilo and stitch lilo's sister is dealing with child protective services because she's struggling financially and having to raise lilo. In the movie lilo's sister manages the burden and stay as a family unit.

Live action yeah she just abandons lilo with a random aunt and then goes to California to study marine biology because she shouldn't have to deal with the burden of child care which is empowering to women? Even though in real life Hawaii is the best marine biology courses in the world because it's hawaii so leaving Hawaii and lilo just an incredibly dumb plot.

Horn was one of those boomers who really thought he had his finger on the pulse of the moment because he kind of followed Twitter trends.

He got played like a fiddle.

And yah, nothing in animated Lilo and Sitch implies the existence of an Aunt who could be looking after the girls, but isn’t because, uh…. Because sister loves the idea of being a teen mom i guess? I think they were going for “Nami is still a kid and deserves to live out her dreams too” but doing so required inventing a plot device family member to assume those responsibilities for her, instead of her learning to both take care of her sister AND follow her dreams at the same time.

And Belle is not supposed to have Stockholm. Beast has to save her life and also start being nice to her before she started liking him. They get to know each other as people

They had multiple hair colors(died orange, died blue, purple, green, I assume), that is all the diversity the team needed.

Nah, I’ve seen the director. She was blonde. Very blonde. With a mostly male supporting staff.

I think in the light of the movie this is quite a minor gripe.

The movie sh*ts on Mulan’s character and the message of the film and the poem from which it is based.

Mulan is supposed to be a hero because she has can do anything a men can do. She does not need special powers or permission. She is willing to make the sacrifice to join the army so that her father doesn’t have to.

In the movie, her father is unsupportive and suppresses her. Leaving him felt like a release not a sacrifice. Then she is special, literally has powers nobody else has. She is given permission by Jet Li’s character to use her powers; so she is still under the thumb of others. And to top it all off, she removes all of her armour in the middle of combat for no reason. Like who does that.

The movie is sooo bad.

Well, that's already been covered. That's why I didn't bring it up. There's an endless list of things wrong with this movie.

Yet to get the aforementioned wrong just proves how little care and research they did into Chinese culture and authenticity. So OF COURSE everything else was a car crash.

They literally cut away everything I love about her. I never wanted to be Jasmine. I wanted to be Mulan and Belle.
