Hated Tropes (Hated)changing somenthing to be more "progressive" ends up being a bad thing

Now to be clear,i am not one of these "anti-woke" losers that complain some people exist, and i am also not the type to complain about changing somenthing in a new version or adaptation, however there are cases where it did ended up being a bad idea.

-In the anime of Cowboy Bebop there is the character Gren, despite being short lived the character is very memorable specially thanks to his tragic story.Basically his story was that he was a soldier from the titan war who was a great friend with Vicious(the main bad guy)after the war he was emprisioned thanks to Vicious who testified against him and he was forced to take a experimental drug that caused him hormonal problems, giving him a feminine appearence and even breasts.

In the Netflix live action, for some reasons they decided Gren was going to be non-binary,which wouldn't be a problem(some people believe he was gay in the anime)if it wasn't for the fact that they also removed all the nuances and complexities that made the character memorable and interesting, instead of a tragic war veteran that was betrayed and had his body changed against his will,Gren is just kinda there.

-The original Rugrats cartoon had the couple Betty and Howard,Betty was a big and masculine woman while Howard was a smaller and nervous man,it was a genuine interesting relationship that stood out from the other couples who were the standard straight couple.

In the new series however they replaced Howard with a woman named Trish, two things, first off why? What was the problem with having a woman being the stronger in a straight relationship?Second why does Hollywood seem to think that every tomboy or masculine woman is a lesbian?

Overall not the worst thing but it is jarring that they had a gender reverse roled that was progressive and decided that wasn't enough.

-Oh man, this one pisses me off the most so i am gonna have to break it down

So back in the late 80s and 90s there was this anime called Saint Seiya also knows as Knights of the zodiac,it tells the story of knights who fight for the Goddess Athena to protect earth, being divided in the golden, silver and bronze knights, the anime was a huge hit in latin america and Europe and while it floped in the US it still has a loyal fanbase.

Being a fan myself i can't recommend it enough, now granted the story does have a fair share of flaws, and that's because the author was honestly just making stuff up as he went along(also a lot of side characters are poorly used or even forgotten about)still it is a great story you should check out

But then a couple of years back Netflix got the rights and decided to a 3D reboot,in this reboot they decided to make the story more "american" to try to bring more american viewers, now i could go on and on a big rant about how that was a bad idea and the execution was so terrible that it made me want to strangle someone but this post is about one specific change.

So Saint Seiya has five main characters, those are Pegasus Seiya,Dragon Shiryu,Cygnus Hyoga,Phoenix Ikki and finally Andromeda Shun.

While the other four characters were the standard masculine and brute male characters who were always ready to throw punches,Shun was smaller, more sensitive and even feminine looking,a pacifist who didn't liked fighting, but don't mistake that for weakness because Shun was loyal to his friends and was extremely powerful.

Then Netflix decided to change Shun into a girl named Shaun.

So wait, you have a male character who goes against every male stereotype and you turn him into just another generic female character?

When asked about it,the showrunner Eugene Son said he made that change because there was no girl in the group and having a all boys group wouldn't be acceptable nowadays

First off that's not true because Athena was also part of the main cast, yeah she wasn't the fighting type but she still helped quite a lot in the story even saving the knights on several occasions, second if you wanted to add a girl to the main group why not use Marin or Shaina?Hell,if you were going to change the story anyway why not turn Seiya sister into a knight?

Thankfully this monstrosity was cancelled(so much for trying to bring more fans)

A lot of cis people in this comment section are missing just how much Netflix betrayed trans people with Gren.

The gren in the classic cowboy bebop was *already progressive *. What i mean by this is that his unique backstory made him perfect representation for intersex, trans, and nonbinary people who all bonded over how his story was relatable to them. He was a man who had his body altered against his will but the only outward change was his sex organs. This was not played for comedy, he was not being mocked or depicted as a freak. None of that "Bob has bitch tits" shit. It was 100% sympathetic. He's shown with textbook signs of gender dysphoria and the narrative sympathizes with him. In the FUCKING NINETIES.

Netflix's version of gren took a heartfelt, sympathetic depiction of the struggles trans people and intersex people face and murdered it by turning all of that realistic, messy queer suffering into YASSSS KAWWWEEEEEEN SLAYYY. Instead of a soldier who has actual desires and hobbies like playing the saxophone, he's an ex prostitute who runs a whorehouse. No other characterization.

his is insanely common. Trans characters who are meant to appeal to cis audiences are always happy 100% of the time, they look like drag queens. They never try to pass or question their station in life. They always are sexualized or work in sex work. They die, a lot. Gren was none of those things. Classic Gren is closer to a real trans person than anyone Netflix could have hired to consult them on that show, and he wasnt even trans.

hollywood and big studios do this so fucking often, but its always insidious and low key. they never give away the game, 'yes we don't like honest depictions of trans people, we only like stereotypes' .Here is fuckin proof. They TOOK an honest depiction and TURNED it into a stereotype. Side by side the two Grens look like a photo from a medical study where one identical twin is healthy and the other's a meth addict, that's how big the difference is.

Well put, I never watched the live action because its impossible to improve upon perfection, so I had no idea they ruined Gren's character. But you pretty much nailed how I felt the first time I saw the episode, as someone who took like 15 years after the fact to realize my empathy towards them was a lot more than the result of good writing. It sucks that stigma and clichè free queer characters are so rare.

It was generally bad. It had a good aesthetic to It, but that was about it. Nearly every character but Jet was radically altered in personality and back story, they took several of the original plot lines and twisted them in a way that took the soul out of them, and the action sequences and gunfights became generic Hollywood drivel almost instantly.

there is a whole ass cult with initiations and rituals based around gaslighting people a rapey trans stereotype in an old movie is good representation.

That is a fucking bizarre way to describe The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

u/GammaDie345 3d ago

well, if you're cis the charades are fun. if you're the only trans woman in the room, it's a humilation ritual.

also fun fact the director is a TERF who publically endorsed pedophile Germaine Greer.

I’m a trans woman.

That's an interesting perspective.

I came to essentially the exact same conclusion though from a different reasoning.

To me, Gren's was first and foremost a war story. He went off to war and not all of him came back, as surely as if he had lost an arm or a leg or an eye. He attempts to move on and return to normal life but he never quite manages to, ultimately never escaping the war and it's consequences, eventually dying in the attempt to get answers out of Vicious about if there was some kind of meaning to what happened to him. Ultimately his body is returned to Titan, one last casualty.

Making him just be happy about his circumstances is *also* incredibly insulting to that aspect of Gren's story.

Yeah...the shows insistence on giving more screen time to characters who were only in very specific storylines or who were meant to be kind of mysterious was certainly the shows biggest issue. Because usually the extra material they gave them ended up undermining the character or destroying what made them interesting. They turned Gren from a interesting character who actually broke a lot of stereotypes to the most generic cliched LGBTQ character possible

Vicious and Julia also were hurt badly by curse of additional screentime.

32

u/--Icarusfalls-- 3d ago

From what I heard, the problem with the show was their insistance on not just sticking to the friggin story

Exact same reason why the WoT adaptation was complete ass

2

u/Gamyeon 3d ago

I think for this one in particular, the "issue" was that they wanted an overarching plot, with cliffhangers and the lot (because you gotta get people hooked so they binge watch your show and that kind of mentality). Cowboy Bebop is, mostly, very episodic. Most episodes are pretty self-contained and you mostly get glimpses into each of the crew's past. And even those glimpses often agent long enough or don't give you enough details to make a whole, season-long plot (which I think is by design). So they had to invent stuff and then rearrange events so it all fit into their desired format. But at the same time, it took out a lot in terms of comparison.

I personally don't dislike that they decided to stray from the original story, even if that doesn't mean the show is perfect by any means. But I can see how it disappointed people who were expecting a more 1 to 1 adaptation.

1

u/mmcjawa_reborn 2d ago

To be fair I think they would have actually done better had they not tried to adapt so many of the stories straight from the anime. Because they didn't have the budget or interest to adopt them correctly, so instead we got these distinctly inferior versions that managed to leave out anything interesting or thematic from the story they adapted.

RLM voice: What's their story?

u/UnquestionabIe 3d ago

Extremely well put. I'm not part of LGBTQ community but have plenty of friends who are and try to be as supportive as I can (which a major part of I think is listening to others). I was something like 16 or 17 when I first saw Cowboy Bebop when it aired on Adult Swim. Gren was always such a great minor character, having both their own struggles but still being portrayed as a regular person living their life. There is no real attempt to push his sexuality or condition as a major defining characteristic, it's just another aspect of them. Yeah it has some impact on a variety of things but isn't treated as some oddity which informs every other part of the character.

Would never have guessed the person on the left was from Cowboy Bebop, they look like Desire from Sandman

10

u/EugeneVictorDabs 3d ago

It's the same actor I think

3

u/A_Possum_Named_Steve 3d ago

I was so confused for a second because I thought that was Desire from Sandman.

Edit: Huh, same actor. TIL

u/Homebrew_GM 3d ago

I remember being very put off by Gren the first time I watched Cowboy Bebop. Took me 12 or so years to realise I was transfem and so his clear gender dysphoria was fucking with me, because I looked at him and wanted that on some level and was thrown by someone not wanting that, even if I didn't know at the time.

15

u/Zimmonda 3d ago

Grens "both but neither at the same time" comment to Faye is seared into my brain.

10

u/Jicks24 3d ago

It's so good. It somehow comes off as them accepting who they are while being angry about it. Like they're answering the question "which one are you" to themselves.

That they're lost in this body and time and place and struggling to find an answer, when no clear answer exists. They're just getting by while constantly being haunted by their past and present.

Then they make a stand and make the ultimate sacrifice to face down the person that did this to them. Only to ask to be returned to the last place they felt they belonged: an awful, toxic, war torn hellscape.

"I'm glad im who i am, but i'll never stop fucking resenting the fact i never got a choice" is a sentiment i see from some trans people who transition after puberty. It's part of why my friend liked Gren so much. They find comfort in their bodies at long last, but the experience of having to get to that point and wait decades basically being poisoned from inside out permanently changes them

the 1975 East Germany women's Olympic shotput team were forced to take testosterone as teenagers. Many of them killed themselves or were branded as cheaters so the government would save face. One of them, by sheer coincidence, was a transgender man. And he was actually more pissed off than the cis ones, because (paraphrase)

"It should have been my choice. I should have had the honor to make myself a man, or whatever i would have chosen to be at that moment. You took that self discovery from me"

I got to meet Shinichiro Watanabe. He did a talk at my school about his experiences as a director. He had a translator since most of us didn’t speak Japanese. The question of queer people in cowboy bebop (mostly in regards to Ed) came up and he said how he thought the people around him who didn’t conform to gender were so cool and he wanted to put that in his world. He’s far from conservative, in fact he’s a really cool guy!

When I came out my Dad thought I wanted to be a drag queen 🙄
People are severely misinformed.

5

u/fetchmysmellingsalts 3d ago

Thank you for sharing such an in-depth explanation from a trans perspective. I watched Cowboy Bebop many years ago and enjoyed it, but I was pretty young. I’ll need to go back and watch it again now so I can appreciate the story through adult eyes.

10

u/nimtona 3d ago

this! like you said its crazy how a representation made 30 years ago is so much more accurate to how is it like being trans than an adaptation of that representation made today

8

u/TheAudienceStopped 3d ago

The live action version is also just… ugly?

3

u/IDanceMyselfClean 3d ago

NGL I can't think of any media, with good honest depictions of trans people, that mirror my own experience in any way.

3

u/Gamyeon 3d ago

I'll be real: until I opened this thread, I had NOT made the connection that those two characters were supposed to be the same. Like, at all. To me they are so far apart that the Netflix Gren seems more like a nod to the original character (even if a bad one) rather than an adaptation. I actually thought they had just dropped that arc from the Netflix show or that we'd see it later for some reason.

Yikes.

4

u/Cageweek 3d ago

made him a sex worker, because of course

Every trans person has inherently sexualized lives with a lot of this writing. How do these «writers» even have jobs lol

5

u/DesperateCoffee30 3d ago

So glad this is high up there. The fuck ups they made on that show are many, but what they did to Gren really showed how out of touch the material the show runners were.

7

u/Chama-Axory 3d ago

I swear is like Netflix took the character, point a gun at it and said "YOUR ARE TRANS AND YOU WILL BE PROUD OF IT" Instead of his whole struggle.

4

u/GammaDie345 3d ago edited 3d ago

nobody's forcing anything to be trans.

What netflix did was look at a subtle and emotionally intelligent depiction of a character that meant a lot to trans fans due to how close to compassionately depicting their suffering and replaced it with pandering to cis people who see trans people as exotic sex objects.

a character with actual depth and interior experience that trans people could relate to was replaced with a soulless one that was basically a minstrel performance of trans people meant for someone other than them

4

u/Chama-Axory 3d ago

Maybe I didn't express it well, but this is what I mean lol pointing a gun to force possitivity

4

u/GammaDie345 3d ago

Yeah. Life isnt positive for trans people unless you're rich enough to essentially dodge the shit life syndrome.

depictions that force positivity don't even try to hide it. The way most trans fictional charracters live would be HELL for us in real life. but of course on TV we smile and constantly blab about how awesome it is to be a homeless prostitute who's balding. nobody tries to sexually assault us in these shows either....

5

u/Slateboard 3d ago

I've heard this kind of thing described as anime Gren being a normal person who happens to be LGBT due to the circumstances, while netflix Gren is a person who has being LGBT be their personality.

I don't know enough to know if that's accurate.

5

u/Raetheos1984 3d ago

Fucking preach!!! I don't know why this is so hard to understand. What's worse is the writers refuse to understand this either, trying to Uno Reverse people criticizing their work as being bigots. That's the part that burns me the most, as their poor writing shoehorning as many stereotypes in as possible shows that - if anyone - they are the real bigots here.

4

u/Captain_StarLight1 3d ago

Idk about other cis people, but personally, I think the Netflix version is missing the point. Even without the transgender aspect, it’s still body horror(I suppose being trans could be considered body horror itself(pre-transition that is)), being forced into a body that you do not want. To make Gren not do that is just stripping everything that made that character work. It’s like if Beast from Beauty and the Beast was just a normal dude the whole time, or at least didn’t mind being a monster. There’s no point of their inclusion in the story if the story they serve lost its conflict.

2

u/GammaDie345 2d ago

like i said, some exec just saw Gren had a thing going on in the original that made him relatable to trans people, and thought "oh wait, audiences love tr####ys!" and made him their idea of a trans person utterly divorced of the lived experience. Yet another drag queen to pity-fuck and then kill off.

1

u/Soft_Self_6797 2d ago

I didn't watch the show past the first episode because it was an atrocious adaptation right off the bat. I can believe they butchered Gren's storyline so harshly. That show got NOTHING right that the anime succeeded at.

1

u/SaltyNorth8062 2d ago

You summed up my distaste in that topic perfectly. Gren was handily my favorite side character when I was a kid because he was so interesting. Then, after I got older and came out after some realizations, Gren became my favorite character, period. It's a heartbreakingly real and sympathetic depiction of gender dysphoria, that doesn't judt take thr easy route and align with stereotypical depictions, which itself causes dysphoria in gncs or otherwise not simply cis people when their experiences don't align to those common depictions, like what happened to me. Because I was not experiencing these exact same feelings as other noncis people, it caused me a heavy bout of imposter syndrome. It is also a very sympathetic depiction of what gender nonconformity can look like, as well as a great story about the compicated feelings people can have for others. Gren is written with so much nuance that I to this day have no definitive answer to the question of whether or not his feelings for Vicious count as queer longing or not, or platonic attachment, or not, or something else, or not. That's why Gren is amazing to me.

Not every single god damn queer or gnc person in existence is RuPaul, (to be clear I have no beef with RuPaul) but RuPaul is the only gnc allowed to exist in society because he is the only type of queer they are willing to accept and only because the show made gangbusters.

u/JudithSlayHolofernes 3d ago

I agree with what you’re saying, but I also understand they were in a tough spot in trying to modernize a character whose body was sexually reassigned against their will. There’s so much fear-mongering surrounding surgeries and hormone therapies for trans people, I can understand wrestling to update Gren’s story in a respectful way.

I think with any oppressed/minority group, representation in media travels on an arc. At first, they’re demonized. Then, there’s a shift in awareness and now, in direct reaction to the history of demonization, this group is presented as perfect angels.

And then eventually we hit a middle point where these characters can simply be represented as people.

I think we’re reaching that point with trans characters in the mainstream, but there’s still definitely a nervousness about putting trans characters in any sort of negative or controversial light because of all the political targeting. No one who’s interested in portraying trans characters wants to be the person who provides transphobic groups with more ammo.

-2

u/Leisure_suit_guy 3d ago

You call the people that complain against this garbage tokenization stuff (put a chick in it and make her gay!) "internet bigots", but I'm sure that the vast majority of them would accept well written diverse characters (just like they accepted the original Gren).

-3

u/imdaramenmastaa 3d ago

I will say, there’s actually really good trans representation in one piece. There’s a lot of BAD representation too, but bon clay, ivan kov, yamato, and kiku are all strong characters with their own stories. I would ignore kamabakka kingdom all together and if you squint Sanji is trans fem and I will die on this hill
