miscellaneous Media Made to Prove the Haters Wrong

Tunak Tunak Tun (Daler Mehndi) Critics claimed his music videos were only popular because they featured attractive women dancing. Mehndi responded by making a music video featuring nobody except multiple green-screen versions of himself. It became a massive hit and his most famous song.

Five Nights at Freddy’s - Scott Cawthon previously made a family-friendly game called Chipper & Sons Lumber Co. Critics complained that the characters looked like creepy animatronics. Rather than abandon that visual style, Cawthon decided to turn them into an actual horror game using scary animatronics.

Superman Kingdom Come - Mark Waid and Alex Ross were reacting to the 1990s trend of increasingly violent, cynical superheroes.

Their story deliberately challenged the belief that traditional superheroes like Superman were outdated. It portrayed the consequences of abandoning heroic ideals and argued that compassion, restraint, and morality were still essential to superheroes.

When do you think Watchmen was made ?

Watchmen was written in 86/87 and preceded the 90s angst and glorified violence. It was purposefully constructed/written/drawn to depict what these character/heroes would look like in the real world - the violence was uncomfortable and not “badass”. It actually unintentionally started the trend bc other creators took the violence but left the real message, story depth, reasoning behind. However, if you are going off the Snyder film, then yeh all that gets lost and it falls into the ultra-violence to look cool 90s schtick.

You don't have the 90's angst without the late 80's. That is when the ultra violence books were coming out. Faust was 1988. The Crow was '88. Even "The Dark Knight Returns* which helped kick off all that angst, debuted 1986. And of course, The Watchmen. That's ignoring all the comics and continuing stories in Heavy Metal Magazine and British books, like Rogue Soldier and Judge Dredd.

The Comics Code was still in effect for Marvel and DC until the early 90's, but there were plenty of ways around that. But DC and Marvel especially were pretty late to the party.

yep Snyder isn't a very deep director, which is weird because he keeps making projects that pretend to have depth.

at least Michael Bay knows what he's about.

Watchmen was the inciting incident and a key factor for the way comicbook industry changed, Watchmen became “the best” and everyone wanted to be like the best so they tried to replicate without or internalizing the story first which translated into higher brutality, cynicism for superhero media and surface level political comentary
