miscellaneous Media Made to Prove the Haters Wrong

Tunak Tunak Tun (Daler Mehndi) Critics claimed his music videos were only popular because they featured attractive women dancing. Mehndi responded by making a music video featuring nobody except multiple green-screen versions of himself. It became a massive hit and his most famous song.

Five Nights at Freddy’s - Scott Cawthon previously made a family-friendly game called Chipper & Sons Lumber Co. Critics complained that the characters looked like creepy animatronics. Rather than abandon that visual style, Cawthon decided to turn them into an actual horror game using scary animatronics.

Superman Kingdom Come - Mark Waid and Alex Ross were reacting to the 1990s trend of increasingly violent, cynical superheroes.

Their story deliberately challenged the belief that traditional superheroes like Superman were outdated. It portrayed the consequences of abandoning heroic ideals and argued that compassion, restraint, and morality were still essential to superheroes.

The Meat Puppets started as a hardcore punk band. The hard core punk scene rejected them for having long hair and not dressing the right way so they got spit on and bottles thrown at them. The Meat Puppets then decided hardcore punk fans suck and they were going to make country music. Their version of country was not traditional but they went on to become pretty successful

Punks booing a band for not conforming to their ideals and norms is a really funny bit of situational irony

"Punk ain’t no religious cult

Punk means thinking for yourself

You ain’t hardcore when you spike your hair

When a jock still lives inside your head." - Jello Biafra

Basically, the less punk a band looks, the more punk they actually were.

I shit you not, if you go to a punk/hardcore/metal/whatever show and the guitarist looks like Hank Hill or something, you're about to get your face melted.

More than just music, it's a hairstyle.

Nothing is more punk than sticking to established themes and aesthetics!

People tend to romanticize older subcultures, but a lot of times it was like that: you had to follow strict rules to fit in (and also the rules were debatable, which lead to divisions). And also they fought with each other, meaning there were hooligans based on music genres, which sounds ridiculous now.

You ain’t got no leather jacket

You ain’t got no red mohawk

You ain’t got no engineer boots

You ain’t got no crass albums

Regan sucks, give me a beer!

You’ll never be as punk as me

Those weren't punks, those were jocks. They infected the scene at one point. They didn't care about the politics or the ideology they just wanted an excuse to beat people up.

And now, let's repeat the Non-Conformist Oath! I promise to be different! I promise to be unique! I promise not to repeat things other people say!
