Personality [Mismatch Powers] Users whose weapons or abilities go against their personality
Users whose weapons or powers are not the “standard” ones for their personality type. It’s not that the characters hate them as such, but that their powers or weapons are not what one would expect from their archetype.
- Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: There’s a theory that Master Splinter gave each turtle a specific weapon so that it would balance out their personality, just as the image shows.
- Bertolt Hoover – Attack on Titan: Bertolt was chosen to inherit the Colossal Titan because, according to his instructor Magath, he was the calmest and most composed of all the Warriors, and the Colossal Titan is a “god of war.”
- Seto Kousuke – Kagerou Project: His power allows him to read minds and maintain telepathic communication with his friends, but he rarely uses it because he is someone who values privacy and sincere connections.
- Sloth – Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood: He is the homunculus named after the sin of Sloth, and as such he is very lazy and only wants to rest; nevertheless, his characteristic ability is superhuman speed.

Meanwhile in part 3, Avdol has fire powers but is the most level headed and chill person in the main group74
u/Danny18010 6h ago
I honestly really like the dynamic between Ghiaccio & White Album and Avdol & Magician’s Red
Like if you look at the symbolic meaning of their elements rather than the literal ones, it makes sense
Ghiaccio is a cold-blooded, overwhelming assassin so he gets the power that can overwhelm anything with strict freezing temperatures. Cold and uncaring as a glacier.
Avdol is kind, warm, and knowledgeable. He’s a fortuneteller that even named the two part III Jojo’s stands. He’s like the warm bonfire that people tell tales around, the candlelight that shows you the way in the darkness. He is the flame of Prometheus that was stolen from the gods and giving to humanity. Avdol revealed god’s(DIO) secret(his location) & gave it to humanity(Joestars)

One Piece: Admiral Kizaru is very easygoing, speaks and moves very slowly, is so absentminded he often forgets what he's supposed to be doing, and likes to draaaaaaaaw out his wooooooooords. Generally, almost everything about him goes slowly and takes a lot of time.
The one exception is his fighting, as he has light powers. He can turn into light, fire light beams, make constructs out of pure destructive light... making him the single fastest combatant in the series on account of being literally lightspeed.
"Have you ever been kicked at the speed of light?"

Having only seen screenshots and clips from One Piece, he does not seem huge by the show/manga standards.
Aren't some of the characters building sized and even larger?
98
u/NoLegs02 6h ago
The tallest human in One Piece is around 8 meters tall iircs (Big Mom). The next step up from that is the shortest Giant at 12 Meters.
Even still, the Admirals are very tall compared to the average person, and especially our main characters
55
u/AyaKamiki 6h ago
For what it's worth, sizes in One Piece tend to change a lot, and becomes more artistic choice to convey the danger that a given character poses.
13
4
u/Illustrious-Bass4354 1h ago
There are larger humans, and certainly larger humanoid species like the Giants, or the Ancient Giants that tower over even the Giants.
But Kizaru is still extremely large compared to the vast majority of the cast. Most humans are still less than 7 feet tall in-universe. The majority of the human cast is about 6 feet tall, with most of the taller characters not actually being human.
28
190
u/S-Pigeon33 6h ago
This also applies somewhat to the other Admirals.
Aokiji: He has ice powers despite being the most passionate and emotional of the Admirals, to the point that he left the organization when it no longer matched his views (or when he saw it never did).
Akainu: Has magma powers despite being the coldest in demeanor and a stoic individual who acts entirely out of duty, without a care for who gets caught in a crossfire.
Fujitora: Has the gravity fruit, and his main move is dropping meteors on people, despite being the most kindhearted admiral and the one most concerned about protecting the innocent and upholding justice.
Ryokugyu: Has plant powers and, just by fighting somewhere, he can restore a whole ecosystem to life, except that he is an asshole willing to murder and allow the enslavement of anyone his bosses want.
30
u/blue4029 5h ago
now what is the connection with that guy and his buddha fruit?
42
u/S-Pigeon33 5h ago
Funny that Sengoku has the Buddha fruit, given that he was, at least during his time as admiral and then fleet admiral, Mr. War Crimes. He was a tactician who used any methods to get a win over pirates, like engineering the events of Marineford, knowing it would cause a lot of casualties and leave a massive power vacuum if he succeeded, and the hunt and execution of every pregnant woman on an island just on the off chance they were carrying Gol D. Roger's baby. Also, he was very attached to his work and constantly stressed over it; it wasn't until he retired that he finally chilled out and achieved a more enlightened state.
2
u/Airam1701 1h ago
He is really hot-headed, and turns to violent measures relatively quickly, quite the opposite of what his fruit represents, but he does chill out later on.

I'm not a physicist, but wouldn't being kicked at the speed of light make you desintegrate from the impact, you know because of the mass x acceleration thing?/
23
u/blue4029 5h ago
not in the one piece world, where luffy was completely immune to enel's lightning powers due to being made of rubber despite enel's lightning power actually being able to exceed rubber's resistance
11
u/EmeraId-HeraId 5h ago
I guess one piece physics are just different. This is a world were Usopp, who is supposed to be a "regular" human, can get hit in the face by a 4 ton steel bat and only break his nose, instead of completely crushing his skull and send it flying a kilometer away.
3
u/crisisbattl 5h ago
Being kicked at 99.9% the speed of light would carry more energy than detonating every nuclear bomb on earth at once
1
u/Red-7134 20m ago
The mass of a human moving and striking something at 1% of the speed of light would destroy.... nothing, because the human body would be vaporized before it even approaches that speed.
But if the body was completely invulnerable to any sort of physical trauma, friction, and more, then that speed focused onto the point of a single human body striking something would vaporize the entire planet.

the mismatch lands hardest when the weapon is the one thing that would expose the character if they actually used it properly, which is why the colossal titan reads as deliberate instead of just ironic, bertolt's composure is the only reason a body that size doesn't flatten his own squad. splinter's version is the same logic with less stakes, give the hothead the blades and he has to learn patience or get himself killed.
209
u/Super_Landscape_7249 8h ago
Yeah the turtles chart makes it obvious once it’s laid out like that. The weapon forces the opposite trait instead of matching it.
59
u/Kathanay 7h ago edited 7h ago
I'd say this description is the most accurate for the 2 turtles with personality flaws / warm colours (I have forgotten which turtle bears which name)
Because in my book a simple weapon actually promotes creative use of it
74
u/MadMageMars 7h ago
The Quarterstaff is genuinely the most versatile weapon in how it can be used. It’s not complicated like the nunchucks, but the nunchucks can’t hit someone from 4 feet away while still maintaining distance. It’s not lethal like the sword, but nobody likes getting hit in the head (or in the groin) with a stick repeatedly.
It’s a weapon so simple that being creative with it is a must. You know what a sword can do, but a quarterstaff? The possibilities are endless
40
u/Negativety101 6h ago
They both go against, but also in other ways compliment the Turtles. The swords are weapons that need discipline and precision to use, fitting Leo's mindset. The staff is versitile, limited less the more creative and clever the user. Raph can bludgeon someone with the pommels of his sais or just straight up stab them. Nunchucks are fluid and unpredictable. It's really neat that you can look at it multiple ways.
7
8
u/Sharp_Solid_2232 6h ago
The first ones flaw was being to averse with fighting. blades are very lethal and you can’t be averse to causing harm while fighting with one. the second one is about right. the staff isn’t because the third one is creative, but because he tends towards ingenious (and complicated) solutions. Nunchucks arent even a proper weapon and need much focus to be used without hitting yourself. All four weapons work against them based on their flaws.
1
u/Clear-Set6334 1h ago
Exactly, that's the whole point of the trope, the weapon teaches the opposite trait. It's not just irony, it's deliberate training.
39
u/mostlybored1234 8h ago
give the nuke to the person less likelly to use it i aways say
3

Exactly, that's the whole point of the trope, you hand the nuke to the one person who'd treat it like a complicated piece of furniture and hope they never find the manual.

Pretty much every power in "Worm". The power system is such that powers tend to emphasize the worst traits of a person.
example Alec/Regent of the villain team Undersiders is a lazy man who wants to relax and put in as little effort for the most gain as possible (extreme simplification of his character) and his power lets him mess with another persons nervous system. Causing muscles to flex randomly leading to dropped weapons or tripping hazards. However should he put in enough effort throughout multiple hours of studying another person while using his power on them he can completely take over their body and superpower if they have one.
Main character Taylor/Skitter is in a similar situation. Having the ability to completely control all bugs in a radius. She is someone who desperately wants to be in control due to a extreme lack of trust in authority and a lack of control prior to her gaining powers.
35
u/Dr__glass 5h ago
Worm is perfect for this. The photon mom's were trapped in a dark place and both triggered light based powers, and neither are happier for it. I saw a quote somewhere regarding that setting along the lines of 'If what you truly need is the power to fly you won't get it.'
18
u/JedenTag 5h ago
I think its probably more accurate to say that if what you truly, absolutely need is to get away from a highly stressful situation, you'll get the power to fly. And in general this will be helpful for maybe 30 seconds until you inevitably have to go back to that situation. And then every time you fly after that you'll be reminded of the worst day of your life.
6
u/tiredslothissleepy 4h ago
Exactly! Surrounded by bugs and filth feeling completely helpless at the lack of control she has of her life. Taylor triggered with the power control the bugs crawling on her. And since her power cant be turned off she is constantly reminded of the feeling of being trapped.

u/MasonP2002 1h ago

197
12
u/trak-nagem-8000 6h ago
How the sais are NOT an offensive weapon?
98
u/SchroKatze 6h ago
Their primary use is catching enemy weapons and restraining/disarming them. plus restraining joints, not stabbing people. They can be used like that, but its not the main intent
→ More replies (4)22
u/vp917 6h ago
IIRC, while they are built for stabbing, the prongs let them trap blocked blades and then apply force to disarm them.
→ More replies (4)11
u/PapiCud 6h ago
Cause they only have the point to use for attacking, it doesn't have an edge. And the hooks are to catch swords and disarm your opponent.

u/Woahbuffet123 6h ago
It's a side arm used similarly to the jitte, a baton built to deflect and catch swords. The jitte and sai are weapons used by the police during Edo period Japan, tho sais are prominently Okinawan.
→ More replies (1)3
u/trak-nagem-8000 6h ago
You are mostly correct, the thing is, unlike the jitte, and I know I could be very wrong here, so please correct me if I am, I don't recall any record of the sai being a side arm.
If I remember correctly, the sai was the main weapon of high rank police officers of okinawa.
And even if it was a side arm, like the jitte, it still is a batton and battons are made to beat the shit out of people! The sai, and the jitte, having more deffensive capabilities, compared to other weapons, does not mean they are NOT offensive weapons!
4
u/fingertipsies 5h ago edited 5h ago
Because in historical combat, dagger-like weapons aren't effective as offensive weapons. They're awful as an actual weapon because their short range makes it extremely difficult to attack armed opponents without putting yourself at risk. If you're going to use a dagger seriously, it will be as an offhand weapon to block with. You'll have an actual weapon in your main hand to attack with.
They're good enough if your opponent is unarmed, but basically anything will be good enough if your opponent is unarmed lol.
EDIT: To be clear, when I say "dagger-like" I mean in terms of size and shape. Sais are in the same general range bracket so they follow similar logic.
2
u/trak-nagem-8000 5h ago
Because in historical combat, dagger-like weapons aren't effective as offensive weapons. They're awful as an actual weapon because their short range makes it extremely difficult to attack armed opponents without putting yourself at risk.
That depends on the context of the combat tho, right?
See, the sai are blunt weapons, they are battons, and they were the weapon used by high rank police officers in okinawa, so they would, mostly, be against daggers, knifes, sticks, unarmed people, all things wich the sai has an effective advantage over.
6
u/PhD_Greg 6h ago
iirc, they're a side-arm made to catch/trap an opponent's weapon (primarily a sword) between the "tines".
→ More replies (2)1
u/Lex4709 6h ago
Think about how they would be used. Their range is bad because they are short. Their offense is limited because they have no edge just a point. And unlike some depiction in the media, their points aren't even sharp since they weren't used for stabbing.
They are more compable to European sword breakers that (despite the name) were designed for catching the opponent's weapon.

Sloth makes complete sense. The sin of acedia isn't just lazyness and wanting to sleep. And having the power to be super strong make perfect sense, it's the most direct and simplest power there is, it's perfect for Sloth
I'll say pride is the one that make no sense, turning into a shadow feels like the opposite of being prideful
37
u/Psychological_Use586 7h ago
All that I can think of is that pride's power resembles the original 'dwarf in the flask' and given that pride is the only homonculus who actually LOOKS like the dwarf in the flasks original form id say it fits
4
u/Elliot_Mirage_Witt 6h ago
And Lust being able to stab ppl w her hands fits the sin? Like I don't think I remember her having like anything else she could do
16
u/Resident_Onion997 6h ago
Eh in lust there's a lot of penetration. I'd say greed makes less sense since he has indestructible skin, feels more like a pride thing to me
3
u/xolotltolox 1h ago
well, the ultimate reality is that the Homuculi were first and foremost experiments by Father, that he ensouled with a piece of him, to get rid of his sins opportunistically
Lust is an attemtp at creating the Ultimate Offense, Greed at creating the Ultimate Defense, Gluttony was an Attempt at recreating The Gate, etc.

greed can specifically turn his skin hard as diamonds, diamonds are a thing that greedy people often want...

Reuniclus (Pokémon)

If you look at its stats and abilities, it is supposed to be a slow, bulky special attacker. And that's how it works best.
In its Pokémon Sword dex entry, however, it's written "this Pokémon prefers to swing its powerful arms around to beat opponents into submission." It even learns the physical fighting-type move Hammer Arm upon evolving.
14
u/Professional_Maize42 6h ago
So, it's basically a gimmicky/long range Pokemon that just prefers getting cqc?
→ More replies (1)3
u/11Slimeade11 2h ago
Reuniclus is funny because it's supposed to be the Gen V equivalent of Alakazam.
Alakazam's dex entries state it's reliant on it's psychic powers to even move, to the point that it's neck and leg muscles are borderline nonfunctional and even it's Pokéatholon stats reflect this, it's speed and skill are top notch, but it's strength, stamina and jumping ability are nonexistent. It's physical stats in battle are also laughable, so Alakazam is all about brainpower and not so much physical strength.
Reuniclus laughs at this because it's also got insane brain power, to the point it can explode boulders by looking at them too hard, but it's gel can also harden, giving it the ability to punch as hard as it can psychically think. Reuniclus is essentially Plato in that regard.

Hermit Purple - Jojos Bizarre Adventure
Joeseph Joestar's stand ability is the least impactful or powerful of the ones introduced in in part 3, to the point that Dio even calls his stand the weakest there is (which is later corrected to be Survivor). It can create vines that can be for anything that a rope can do as well as spirit photography. He can use cameras, TVs or anything that can create a picture to gain information on what he needs. Compared to the other stands that can punch through diamonds, cut flames in half or even stop time its a very weak ability. However Joseph is a very smart person and is able to think on his feet. He has the simplest ability but uses it very effectively, like creating a map of a city out of dust on the floor to find something he's looking for or using them as a conductive armor when being attacked.
It should be noted that he also got this ability in part for in-universe reasons and also because he isn't the main character of the story anymore.

96
u/iwantdatpuss 7h ago
I also think Araki had to give Joseph a pretty weak stand because if he didn't, he'd be a powerhouse all by himself.
43
u/Careful_Welcome7999 7h ago
I want to see a world where joseph got star platinum instead of jotaro just to see the look on dio's face when this old man starts beating him up
40
u/Wyvwashere 6h ago
Similarly, I'd like to see Jotaro that got Hermit Purple and uses it as boxing gloves to beat the shit out of stands with his own muscles and teenage angst.
21
u/TheRenamon 6h ago
Still had to nerf him even after that. If old Joseph had his Part 2 bullshiting powers he would solo the entirety of Stardust Crusaders.
5
u/FairCod5966 3h ago
Ironically, that's basically the kind of Stand any Hamon user would dream of having. You wouldn't need to carry a weapon or any other object to channel Hamon through for long-range attacks. You'd already have a convenient Stand that can conduct Hamon over long distances.
Too bad Stardust Crusaders made Hamon almost irrelevant, especially considering that Joseph had also neglected his training.

Hell, Vakama is also a pretty decent example. He constantly wants to be the good leader, to be recognised as one, and to be brave, especially as Toa of Fire are often kinda flashy - his Mask power is simply invisibility.
8
2
u/Efficient-Cup-359 3h ago edited 3h ago
I mean it objectively makes more sense than some of the abilities, like Gali being able to breath under water, you’d assume that just comes with the abilities but okay fine, I guess it’s good, but then Lewa needs the mask of levitation, why can the Toa of Air naturally fly?
Edit: I mean as in an ability they don’t already possess, as fire shielding and ice x-ray are unique and independent from their element, stone speed as well even if its basic but earth strength is also a little weird as you’d just assume that would come with the territory of being someone who literally burrows all the time
4
u/Birds-are-cats 2h ago
to be fair, i'm pretty sure the toa all have the same biolagy.
Gali cant breath under water because she has the same lungs as the others. She could use her power to create a bubble of air under water but the mask makes it easier and makes it so she won't run out of air in the bubble.
Lewa could use his powers to launch himself into the sky but he would have to use a lot of effort to control it properly, the mask allows him to do it with minimal effort and lets him use his powers for other things at the same time.
They can control their elements but that doesn't mean they have the physical abilities associated with that element (like water breathing or flight).
It's like the reason water benders in avatar can't breathe underwater; they have the power to control water but they're still human.

Lucario is supposed to be a mixed attacker, and in lore he is a specialist of mystic arts, but due to Fighting and Steel being a bit lacking on the Special side, most players have used Lucario as a physical attacker instead, ignoring most of his special moveset.
8
u/blue4029 5h ago
why would you give a mystic attack the typing of fighting/steel in the first place though...?
12
u/Ok_Cucumber3758 3h ago
lucario in-universe fights using “aura”, and the game represents that by letting him using a special attacking fighting type move called “aura sphere” which does decent damage and doesn’t check accuracy
3
u/dobby_bobby 4h ago
Lucario is named after a Japanese mythological metal I believe, hence the steel type. Fighting type is also often associated with pride/honor.
2
u/xolotltolox 1h ago
It's not, that it is named after orichalcum is just a theory
in reality, it was just given a name that could be universal and didn't have to be changed between laguages
3

The first time I had a Lucario I only had him learn special moves, I liked it that way, and until now I haven't used a Lucario with a physical moveset.

The game Tactical Breach Wizards has Bori Kesh, the Less-Lethal Pyromancer. His magic centers around shooting out massive pillars of not-quite-so-hot Mildfire, and he dresses like an eldritch cultist, complete with a goat skull helmet.
But he is in general a pretty polite, composed guy. The only reason he's even working for the villains is that he's terrified of their leader. During one mission where you're forced to work together with them, your various team members express their own individual hatred for each member of the evil faction.
And then Dall, herself pretty chill on all matters unrelated to defeating the fascist cult controlling her country, points out that she and Bori really have nothing to fuss about; Bori agrees, and the two fistbump.

u/11Slimeade11 2h ago
Sadly the case with a lot of Pokémon. There's a high number of Pokémon with high Attack stats that only learn special moves, and a high number of Pokémon with high Special Attack stats that only learn physical moves.
Typhlosion is one of the worst examples of this.
It learns only Fire type special attacks and almost exclusively physical moves, learning things like Double Edge, Gyro Ball, Earthquake, Shadow Claw, Rock Slide, Brick Break, Wild Charge and Throat Chop, yet it's Attack stat is only 84 compared to it's 109 Special Attack.
On the flipside, the only non physical moves it learns that aren't Fire type are things like Solarbeam, which takes a whole turn to charge, and Extrasensory, which is only obtainable by breeding.

Averted by Yumichika from Bleach - he hides the fact that his weapon is actually exactly like him - super vain - by hiding its true nature.
Bleach's soul reapers are divided into 13 divisions, one of them being the 11th division, a team full of people who love and revel in fighting through brute force and skill. Bloodthirsty, even, with their captain intentionally prolonging fights by wearing equipment that reduces his own powers.
Yumichika, one of the higher-ranked officers in the 11th division, wields a zanpakutou he calls Fuji Kujaku, which transforms into a three-bladed sickle he uses to slice enemies.
However, Yumichika is an extremely vain person, and thinks of himself as beautiful, and in actuality, his weapon is Kido-type (basically magic based) called Ruri'iro Kujaku. He intentionally calls his weapon the wrong name because it makes it angry and doesn't reveal its true power, but its true power allows it to grow vines that absorb the opponent's spiritual power.

Infinity Stones (Marvel Comics)

You’d think giving Infinity Stones to aligning characters would be the best (Hulk with Power Stone, Nightcrawler with Space Stone, etc) but the truth is, the one who’s best suited to use a certain stone would be the one who’s an expert at the previous stone.
Best examplified by The Otherone. He thought the Power Stone was a jellybean and ate it, gaining immense strength. He’s not the sharpest tool in the shed but through meditation, he was able to master his mind which allows him to utilise The Power Stone to its fullest.

She also genuinely cares about medicine and the well being of others. We know this because her previous lieutenant was a sadistic asshole who enjoyed prolonging the healing of others just to watch them suffer, which angered Unohana who thought that was immoral
2
u/DaSmartio 2h ago
I have no idea where you got this. Unohana is a sadist, she is exactly that description you gave for a lieutenant that doesn’t match the description of either of her known lieutenants
2
u/Blacodex 2h ago
That's not true at all. She's not a sadist that enjoys suffering, she enjoys fighting. She didn't learn how to heal to prolong the battle for her opponents, she prolongs the battle for herself. The only opponent she ever healed as much as she did herself was Kenpachi, and that was explicitly because she had to undo the damage she did all the way back.
Unohana is both. She's just as much a medic who cares for her patients as she's a battle lusted maniac who only thrives for the fight. She lives for the fight, but her duty is to be a medic, and that's something she does dutifully.

Sorta, but the Deadly Sins in Hellaverse are like this, being the most powerful demons in Hell you'd think they would match their Sin "traditionally" but out of the ones we have met and have established personalities, only one Sin, Mammon, embodies his Sin (Greed) in a negative way.
Asmodeus, while the Sin of Lust, is more about mutual lust, he calls it art, and despises it being forced, He seemed legitimately angry when he thought Stolas was meeting with him for a love potion.
Beelzebub, the Sin of Gluttony, again, is all about her Sin, but in a "fun" way, people go to her parties, drink, do drugs and fuck to excess, but only within their own limits and only if they are enjoying it, she notes she can taste the energy, which is implied to be her source of power, and she tells Loona that Blitz is getting wasted and making out with people for the "wrong reasons" also she's notably disgusted when she sees how Mammon ate his lunch.
Satan is a little more subtle about his Sin being averted, he's still clearly Wrathful, but, he has a therapist by his side, and it's clear he's actually trying to manage his anger.
Lucifer is Pride, but, while Prideful to the extreme and making mistakes because of it, his true source of pride is his daughter, even if he makes a mistake in Hazbin, it's usually due to him REALLY wanting to connect with his daughter and be proud of her.
As I said, Mammon is pretty much the only Sin who fully embraces his Sins nature, he's greedy to an obnoxious degree, however, there is one hint that he actually does care somewhat about someone other than himself, in S2 of Hazbin, there's a large stack of cash in Lucifer's room, with a note that just says "this is a bribe, come back - Mammon" Mammon, as shown in HB, would be loathe to part with even a single penny, but there it is, a stack of green, time will tell if he was made to do it by the other Sins (who also sent Lucifer gifts) or he genuinely does think of Lucifer as a friend.
We don't really know much about Leviathan and Belphegor, the Sins of Envy and Sloth, but they also sent Lucifer gifts, but also condemned Stolas, however, they don't know Stolas like Ozzie and Bee do, so it might just be because they didn't care about the trial.

The way I interpreted the sins is that they are less beings controlled by the sins but more beings that are trying to encourage others to sin more. With that in mind their actions and personality make more sense.
You get more lust from mutual interest and pleasure than from rape or harassment, which is why Asmodeus supports healthy, mutual relationships.
Party’s and a fun time is how you get people to indulge in excess and forget their limit but someone being in a bad mood or doing it for the “wrong reasons” ruins the vibe and makes people stop indulging, which is why Beelzebub asked Loona to get Blitz away because he was souring the party for others.
Even Mammon shows this. He invests a lot into his most profitable business or stars like Fizzaroli and does a lot of big shows and events. He understands that you need to invest some money for long time profits. Which is also seen with his bribe for Lucifer because him getting out his room is a net positive for everyone.

u/Drakeskulled_Reaper 5h ago
This interpretation could also apply to Satan.
He's the Sin of Wrath, but, he's trying to control his temper, with his wrath being more satisfying, if controlled and put on those who "deserve" it, given he's supposed to be Hell's Judge.
3
u/Dr__glass 5h ago
Wrath/anger is your body's sense of justice in the same way it has a sense for hunger. Thats why he is Hells judge and takes it relatively seriously
3
u/Lokicham 4h ago
Yep, exactly this. Regarding gluttony specifically, people like to depict it as is someone overeating but it's more complex than that. Gluttony is the sin of overindulgence, prioritizing your wants over your needs. It's that feeling where you think "One more won't hurt."

Chie & Yukiko (Persona 4)
One (Chie) is an energetic and hot-headed tomboy while the other (Yukiko) embodies traditional Japanese femininity (calm, graceful, etc). Now guess which one uses fire magic and which one uses ice.
Their mismatched powers are a hint of their dynamic, they both secretly want to be each other. Chie hates the fact that no one sees her as girly because she's a tomboy and is jealous of Yukiko's femininity, while Yukiko hates herself for being the "perfect traditional girl" because she sees it as being weak and helpless (Yukiko also hates her name because it's based off of snow, something soft and frail that eventually disappears). Yukiko also wishes she was more like Chie, a girl that could easily defend herself and doesn't need boys to save her.

Sloth is almost just Slaking if you think about it. they both even have Truant
Slaking (Pokemon)
it fits this trope as well having one of the highest base stat totals (670) especially in attack (160) and while its speed isn't quite Sloth level Slaking is surprisingly fast (100) however its known quite literally as the "world's laziest Pokémon" with the notorious 'Truant' ability which makes it skip every other turn. If this thing loses Truant it could solo some of the strongest Pokémon (if it didn't already one-shot them)

u/Inner-Illustrator408 8h ago
I mean the sin of Sloth isn't really about laziness
41
u/Napalmeon 8h ago
Came here to say this exact same thing. His name is Sloth the Indolent for a reason.
If he was motivated, he could be so much more efficient, but he just doesn't have the drive to do anything more than the bare minimum. If he truly wanted to get the work done faster, he would try to better himself to use his full potential, but that means working harder, right now, and he just doesn't feel like doing that.
11
u/Inner-Illustrator408 8h ago
Tbh all the sins are more nuanced than what source level ways they are often portrayed
Like wrath isn't about being angry, lust is not about being seductive, greed is not about money etc.

Every Avatar that went through their opposite element. Aang struggled on earthbending head-on philosophy, Korra struggled on airbending stoicism and calmness, Roku had a hard time learning waterbending too according to his flashback.
I got no info about Kiyoshi and firebending though, haven't read the novel yet.
7
u/Kitsunenustik 6h ago
Additionally, Sokka was short-sighted, sexist bumpkin. He would learn to be master strategist and warrior from strong women and a master from his enemy’s nation.
Zuko’s journey to honor would only yield meaningful gains through embrace of humility.
Korra eventually needed to become a spiritual leader to combat the philosophical implications of varied powerful political factions.
Ozai, Jin the Conqeror, Amon, Kuvira, and Zaheer fell not out of lack of skill but fragile imbalance. Despite my misgivings w Korra’s execution Avatar’s universe never wavers in its message: Strength comes as a result of balancing all elements of life and borders separating those elements are never as wide as they seem!
3
u/Reasonable-Budget210 2h ago
That’s why I still remain confident with my head cannon that Iroh was stronger than Ozai at the end. It’s paradoxical and i get that it completely makes little sense at face value lol, but because Iroh knew his role as a guide, leading towards a future of balance and didn’t set off to fight Ozai, if they had fought, Iroh would’ve won. But if he sought the fight out himself to become king, even for what he thought were the right reasons, he would’ve lost.
2
u/fy8d6jhegq 3h ago
The way Iroh explained it, the opposing pairs are Air/Earth and Fire/Water.
I think Korra had something else going on that prevented her from using Air initially. She also had a decent grasp of the other 3 elements very early on.
1
u/Bubbly_Interaction63 1h ago
Korra's problem wasn't mastering an element; rather, she focused all her efforts on specializing in the physical aspect of bending, neglecting the spiritual aspect of the Avatar. So it makes sense that she has trouble with airbending, which is the most spiritual element of all.
6
u/darthleonsfw 5h ago
Korra was a water bender, so the air element wasn't her opposite. She was good at fire bending. She did have trouble for the reasons you said, but it was a personality problem rather than an opposites problem.
Aang also had trouble grasping with firebending in the beginning because he thought the source was anger and destruction. He had to have a paradigm shift to start learning it.
2
u/Art-Zuron 3h ago
Aang also had a psychological block because him playing around with firebending nearly maimed Katara

u/darthleonsfw 3h ago
That, and the part where his people got genocided by the Fire Nation

Kiyoshi's opposite was airbending, not firebending, and she actually seemed to have a special affinity for it. I think the novel gave her some airbending ancestry to explain it but I haven't read it.
1
u/StriderKitsu 1h ago
Funny enough Korra didn’t have a hard time with firebending which should be her opposite element since Korra’s already pretty hotheaded.

Suì-Fēng from Bleach. She's a specialist in stealth, speed, and assassination. Her shikai is a subtle arm brace with a deadly needle. Her bankai? A giant and loud rocket launcher that is so huge and powerful, she can't fire it while moving

The read on the Turtle's weapon is always interesting, at surface level and the start of their character arcs they are mismatched, but once they mature and learn to work as a team the weapons are there to exacerbate their strongest traits:
Leo's swords allow him to deal with any threat and is his decision(and burden) alone as a leader if an enemy gets spared or executed. It also paints a target on his back: "I am the biggest threat on the battlefield" serving as an ideological shield to the rest.
Ralph's goes from hot head that rushes into fights to front liner, the sai a constant reminder that he is the shield to his brothers. He is the most durable and arguably the one that loves his brothers the most so now he rushes with purpose and not blind rage.
Donny's staff keeps him grounded and tells him that he MUST keep at an arm's length, he is not the strongest or fastest, he is Intel and problem solving and should be always the last to join the fray if possible. Arguably the most important member in a world overrun with mad science. If push comes to shove,he can wield the staff with brutality without fear of killing(yeah,I know irl a bonk in the head is quite lethal but in cartoon logic it never killed anyone).
Mikey's nunchaku makes him focus on the here and now and his kusarigama on the big picture, all while maintaining non-lethalithy and battlefield fluidity. In his seemingly aloofness he knows all his brothers the best and can read the battlefield to know where he is needed the most.

Sesshomaru (Inuyasha)
Sesshomaru is a prideful yokai that hates humans. his goal is to become strong and defeat powerful opponents. He then inherits the sword tenseiga, which can not kill living beings, but can heal and even ressurect others. His father chose this sword for him so that he could learn compassion and to value the life of others

Equius(Homestuck)
He prides himself on being a sophisticated member of the upper class in the Troll’s strict caste system, and he’s also great at making robots. His preferred fighting style is beating the shit out of opponents with his fists. Although, to be fair, that’s mainly because he’s so strong that whenever he tries to use a bow and arrow,(the weapon he actually wants) it breaks.

Lord Beerus - Ultra Instinct
There is a reason why Ultra Instinct is something he has not mastered to this day
Ultra Instinct goes against his mindset of destruction which is also why Vegeta couldn’t achieve UI since it goes against the way he fights.

In re:zero, Subaru kills Bezelguise, who holds the authority of Sloth, and gains it himself. The authority of sloth is supposed to be used as the first option, but Subaru always uses it as a last resort, making it highly incompatible with him. Later in the anime he gets the authority of greed, which is instead highly compatible with him.
I'm an anime only, but I can see Wrath and lust also being incompatible with him since he isn't shown to have that kind of lust that the archbiship of lust has, nor is he wrathful in his anger

Sara and Kara (left and right respectively) - American Dragon: Jake Long
The twin descendants of the Oracle of Delphi, each of the sisters can see different aspects of someone's future. Sara only sees horrible things that will happen, so anything else she hears is usually a good/fun surprise to her and makes her happy. Kara only sees nice things that will happen, so she has become bored by it and even finds them annoying.

Nope, the TMNT instagram posted the image once because people love parroting it but that’s nothing. It was not the intention when the characters were created and Splinter has never said anything along those lines in any version. You can easily imagine a lesson each weapon could teach each turtle.
Like Leo’s the leader so let’s give him the defensive sais so he has to rely on his team to win fights or Mickey’s the dumb party guy so let’s give him the deadly swords so he can’t swing wildly and has to think ahead.

u/Martin_Aricov_D 4h ago
I thought it was canon that Mickey is actually ridiculously talented with weapons so he got the hardest to master

Just jumping in, the Leonardo thing sounds different from what I had heard.
From what I read and understand, the theory wasn’t anything about his weapon being destructive, the two weapons was to symbolize balancing leadership’s freedom/authority with the twin burden of responsibility that leadership brings, both equal in weight (normally you would use a smaller off hand sword when dual wielding, not two equal sized ones).

u/youremomgay420 56m ago
To be fair, the Colossal Titan has to go to someone calm and composed, because if you transform on a sudden burst of anger you could nuke your allies. Imagine if Annie had it instead.

Okuyasu Nijimura (JoJo's Bizarre Adventure)
Okuyasu quitely famously has one of the most potentially destructive and powerful Stands in the entire series - The Hand can scrape away all matter its right hand comes into contact with, creating a voided space that is then immediately 'stitched up' by surrounding space and matter. This makes it capable of instant long-range teleportation and basically bypasses any conceivable physical defense. It would be a potentially god-tier ability in the hands of a capable, strategic user.
Emphasis on 'potential' here, because Okuyasu is also* quite famously dimwitted and pretty creatively stunted. He's a good guy with a heart of gold, but the dude only has a couple marbles rattling around up in the ol' noggin. A few characters in the series even point out that while The Hand's potential capabilities and the implications of its erasure powers are absolutely terrifying and overwhelmingly versatile, the one thing holding it back is.. *Okuyasu.**

Lust also doesn't fit her sin very well. Yeah she's hot, but she doesn't seem to have any real sexual desire. Greed is greedy at first, but he's the only humunulus with real human Freinds and becomes pretty selfless. The rest of them fit pretty well though, especially wrath.

Geass powers in Code Geass tend to be ironic or be careful what you wish for sort of powers. Someone who hates lies and deception gets the power to implants false memories, someone who wants to be loved by a family makes everyone they meet fall in love with them, someone who wants to connect with people can hear every thought of every person nearby at all times, someone who values personal freedom gets the ability to force anyone to obey them

Sloth also makes sense, in a way. After all, if you get something done fast, you can get back to resting quicker.
