Characters [Loved trope] The MC goes to jail

My name is Earl: Earl decides to take the blame from the stolen truck and kidnapped guy just to keep the family of his cheating ex wife together, at the expense of his own personal growth.

The mentalist: Patrick jane is sent to prison, but that wouldn’t stop him from getting his way.

Tbf though, it was more to comply and keep them at ease, even though they're ineffective

24

u/GuyWithTheDragonTat 8h ago

"I had been handcuffed. And out of respect for the handcuffs, I must yield."

8

u/Gaelic_Gladiator41 8h ago

I mean, 5 mins later, he snaps them like they're twigs

10

u/Dumbledore116 8h ago

If even that, if I remember correctly he just kinda rests his arms at his side and they snap lol

7

u/DelcoUnited 7h ago

Right. No snap it’s like standing up when your kid tied you up with tissue paper.

I have issues with this film, but Snyder nailed the nonchalance of this

"As promised, we're surrendering ourselves to your authority.
Where's Batman?
Running late. The Batmobile, it lost a wheel. The Joker got away. (pause) That's what I heard."

They did the same thing in the much-better JLU cartoon many years earlier in the episode "Panic in the Sky". The officer in charge here though is a bit smarter than in "Man of Steel" and states "those won't be necessary", even though one of the soldiers state it was standard procedure. The officer correctly remarks, "I doubt they would have worked anyway...".

I came in here expecting this to be the top comment, it's what I immediately thought of lmao

Honestly I know he’s an embodiment of flaws (hamartia, there’s your word for the day) but it still makes me kind of sad. Or like restless.

That’s how you know the catharsis works and they got the ending right. Felt more than I did from Walter's death and Jesse's escape and I like both of those endings too.

u/Gaelic_Gladiator41 8h ago

Which imo would've been better if it was less of a clip episode

u/Playful-Succotash-99 7h ago

Wonder what their survival chances were

Kramer seems like he'd be popular with some but he's also likeliy to piss off a gaurd or convict with his Wheeling dealing then again he's likely to have connections on the outside like Numan who would make him powerful

Jerrys neuroses and wise ass nature is likely going to rub somebody the wrong way

George being a cheapskate and so tightly wound up would likely make him an easy target but then again he also is shown to be 100× smarter when he doesn't have to think about sex so he could pull some birdman of Alcatraz shit behind bars

Elaine might do well on her own but she usually has some level of rotten luck. She also chooses to be in worse situations where she can get away with more rather than hold herself to a higher standard. Then again it would also be hell of ironic if she found more female friends behind bars who actually agreed with her on most issues

5

u/Random-Generation86 4h ago

Kramer will be fine until he starts yelling the n-word. Elaine will inexplicably be sent to the same prison, but everyone will assume she is a man and ignore her. George becomes king of the prison after his cellmate has a heart attack. Jerry is shivved on account of the whole fucking kids thing.

Detective Jake Peralta from Brooklyn 99 was in prison for a few episodes. He built a friendship with Caleb the Woodworker

18

u/StickBrickman 8h ago

Good ole child-eatin' Caleb.

15

u/tommytraddles 7h ago

I only ate normal things. Butts and thighs. Once I tried a foot. It was nasty.

17

u/GymratAmarillo 7h ago

"Oh no, Romero is looking angry"

"He always looks angry maybe it's not directed at you"

*Romero points at Jake*

LOL one of my favorite scenes from the arc.

16

u/DixAndBallz 8h ago

Its so nice when people get recognized for their hobbies

12

u/Brimstone747 7h ago

That entire arc was amazing.

My wife calls me "Beef Baby" because of those episodes lol.

6

u/big_sugi 6h ago

Holt and Terry visiting Rosa and getting an increasingly onerous list of favors to do, culminating in cancelling her cable, is terrific. The build up is spectacular.

8

Different arcs. The prison was a few seasons later.

Honestly, the only part of s8 I watch on a rewatch is his prisons scenes.

34

u/Disastrous_Wing7084 8h ago

Arrow - there's a seven episode arc where Oliver Queen is in prison

2

u/Cal_PCGW 7h ago

Which happened at the same time Barry went to jail in The Flash. Bad planning, CW! (Ollie's breakout was the one highlight of an otherwise piss poor seaon).

Some yakuza/Like A Dragon protagonists.

Pictured is Kiryu Kazuma, who has spent around 11-15 years in prison (cant remember which is correct), but others who have spent time in prison are Ichiban Kasuga (10 years), and Taiga Saejima (25+ years)

5

u/4LanReddit 8h ago

Even worse for Ichi because he spent nearly 20 years in the joint.

Misato slimed that guy in new years eve, and Ichiban took the fall in the first day of the 2000s, and has only been freed in 2019.

2

u/ChrisDewgong 7h ago

I believe it was 10 years in the joint, which, according to Nishikiyama, made him a fucking pussy.

Ichiban spent 18 years in prison. He was sentenced to 15, but they thought with good behavior he could get out in 10. But beating up three people, he instead got 3 years added.

6

They hit all kinds of tropes in that movie.

Mistaken identity swap. Evil doppelganger. Execution survival. Getting superpowers from something that should kill you. Mirror match fight. Actor playing more than one character.

Jim Varney was so popular back in the day.

In Chrono Trigger, Crono gets accused of kidnapping Marle, the Royal Princess, and depending on how much of an asshole you were during the fair at the start of the game you are found guilty or innocent.

Whatever the outcome Crono gets sent to jail and the evil Chancellor arranges for Crono's execution in three days regardless.

From that point, you have the option of either breaking out of jail yourself or waiting for the three days to pass, in which case you are dragged off for the execution and Lucca comes to your rescue.

This is found multiple times in the first Dark Souls game. You start in prison, you need to go back into said prison if you want to access the painted world, and if you want to defeat one of the great lords, Seath the Scaleless, you also end up in a different prison in the process. Also yes, technically its not a prison but an asylum, but we all know those are basically just prisons with a fancy name.

EDIT: also fun fact, throughout the game you gain access to teleportation in between bonfires. You cannot travel to every bonfire this way, but you can travel away from every bonfire... except the one in the prison. The only way to get out of that prison is to physically walk through the entire thing and then use a different bonfire. Very cool little interaction in my opinion.

Unbeatable’s second chapter takes place in a prison.

It’s infamous for being a filter point for a lot of players on account of being boring as shit. Granted, it’s prison, it’s not really meant to be a fun place, but something something artistic intent vs gameplay.

Still, it’s also home to probably the second best chapter ending in the game with the prison break and train music video (not that the other chapters are bad, but holy shit does chapter 2 go hard.) And most people that power through chapter 2’s monotony come out loving the game at that ending sequence.

1

u/no-Pachy-BADLAD 7h ago

The Machinist is a rare case where this is the happy ending for the protagonist. The film focuses on, well, a machinist named Trevor who is emaciated due to some form of insomnia. We eventually find out this is due to guilt over being in a hit-and-run accident that killed a boy. Him finally confronting his guilt and handing himself over to the police is meant to be at the very least on the 'sweet' side of a bittersweet ending. He's shown finally enjoying a moment of peace and potentially good sleep when in his prison cell.
