Characters [Fun Trope] Legally Distinct Characters

What do you mean this character has a lot of similarities to another, it’s totally a different original character (essentially parody characters or characters that it is very obvious where the inspiration came from, I’m gonna just do a bit where I pretend that they are totally not, okay, also I left out a fun one on purpose because i thought it would be more fun for the audience, I think it’s fun when they have to go around and make their own when its obvious whose it is supposed to be.)

Characters:

Agent Spider from Invincible:

What do you mean this character is similar to any Marvel character, just because he’s got spider abilities and is voiced by Josh Keaton, doesn’t mean that its Spider-Man

Rorschach from Watchmen:

This character may have a faceless mask and wear trenchcoat and fedora but that does not mean he is a knock off of The Question

Creature of the Clergy from Its Bunlith! The Witch Upstairs!

Okay this character may have some resemblances to other characters but it has a fluffy tail so it is in no way the Cleric Beast from Bloodborne

(I have no idea of the actual name of the last creature so I made my own, please let me know if there is one)

Insert NotZilla example

“It looks like Godzilla but due to international copyright laws, it’s not”

67

u/Daniilsa209 7h ago

"Still, we should run like it is Godzilla!"

58

u/Rough_Confidence3919 7h ago

"Though it isn't"

38

u/ManHamAslume39 7h ago

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

11

u/Aggressive-One5612 7h ago

Thing that bugs me is that it looks nothing like godzilla

24

u/Sure-Comfortable-784 7h ago

Exactly, it’s not godzilla

I swear my morally questionable mercenary who wears black and red and fights with swords and guns is completely different from your morally questionable mercenary who wears black and orange and fights with swords and guns.

He's called Deadpool, not Deathstroke. And his real name is Wade Wilson, not Slade Wilson.

27

u/Okrumbles 7h ago

Holy shit I never even realized lol

Now to be fair I'm not very interested in comics but I thought I'd have osmosis'd this knowledge sooner or something

16

u/catwhowalksbyhimself 6h ago

He also wasn't a silly humorous character at first. He was created as a serious villain. Other writers then took him in the opposite direction.

He was literally supposed to be just a Deathstroke rippoff. Liefield is not known for his originality. Or art skills. Or anything good really.

9

u/Visible-Confusion190 7h ago

Fun fact: Slade actually has a half brother named Wade. I'm not joking.

4

u/GalaxyEye77 6h ago

At least Wade doesn't like them young

1

u/Fabulous-Command-903 4h ago edited 4h ago

If my memory serves right, there's a comic panel of him calling some of the Young Avengers hot....

So him and Slade are unfortunately waaay more in the same ballpark than we though

4

u/Mortal-Instrument 6h ago

Deathstroke and Deadpool were the first guys I thought of when reading the post lol

3

u/VinnySmallsz 6h ago

No relation.

2

u/Randver_Silvertongue 5h ago

They're not really similar though. Deadpool's look and original personality was based on Spider-Man. And his Wade Wilson name was done as a humorous response to the fans who accused him of being a Deathstroke rip-off.

But other than their names and choices of weapons, I don't see any similarities.

2

u/Birds-are-cats 3h ago

thats just... not correct. His personality was not based on petes, he started as a serious villain but was changed over time to be more comedic.

1

u/Randver_Silvertongue 3h ago

He wasn't serious in his debut. He had a very dry sense of humor.

What’s funny is that immediately after this, there’s shots of Charmander and Pikachu costumes running away.

Or would they be called Burnewt and Electrat for copyright reasons

Count Orlok (Nosferatu)

15

u/Just-Antelope-8069 7h ago

Not legally distinct enough unfortunately

12

u/iskotpop 6h ago

Luckily Dracula is free use now.

2

u/Digital_Rocket 5h ago

Pretty cool that he is, also unrelatedly he’s been in the public domain since 1962.

2

u/VisualFunny5287 7h ago

*Count Orlok

The whole cast of Watchmen fits this trope as well. They're all intentionally knockoffs of a bunch of classic Charlton Comics characters that DC bad recently acquired. DC wouldn't let Alan Moore use them though, insisting on original characters.

So, Rorschach is The Question, Silk Spectre is Nightshade, Dr. Manhattan is Captain Atom, Nite-Owl is Blue Beetle (Daniel being Ted Kord, Hollis being Dan Garrett), The Comedian is Peacemaker, and Ozymandias is Thunderball.

18

u/Zaggar 7h ago

Peacemaker was a character who did not matter for decades of DC continuity, and now people can actually see and compare The Comedian & Peacemaker in recent media

0

u/_wizardpenguin 56m ago

Funny that John Cena as Peacemaker never woulda happened if DC just let Alan Moore use his original plan for Watchmen, could say the same for a lot of stuff. If Blue Beetle was mostly known for Watchmen, he would overwhelming known for that more than his mainline iteration in JLI or his team-ups with Booster Gold. Probably wouldn't have gotten Jaime Reyes either.

9

u/jubmille2000 7h ago

Thunderbolt not -ball.

0

u/_wizardpenguin 55m ago

Right. He was also never acquired by DC, over some rights issues.

5

u/Misplaced_Fan_15 7h ago

True but it is more accurate to say Silk Spectre has more in common with Phantom Lady rather than Nightshade.

39

u/SatoruGojo232 7h ago

Webweaver (The Boys)- he's a spider-themed costumed character who shoots webs out of his backside, with a costume that looks really similar to anothe hero who can do that, but that doesn't mean he's essentially Spider-Man in a new costume.

24

u/UltimateOtter_Nation 7h ago

They made a parody of Brown Widow?

5

u/Bjables 6h ago

He’s Rustyyyyyyy!

1

u/Kylestache 4h ago

I’m Rustyyyyy

5

u/Professional_Boss438 7h ago

Weird to single this one out and not include the other 80% of the cast who also qualify

38

u/FandomScrub 7h ago

Herlock Sholmès - Arsène Lupin versus Herlock Sholmès

10

u/Just-Antelope-8069 7h ago

And Herlock Sholmes from Great Ace Attorney

6

u/Anfins 7h ago

And Pete Holmes’ Herlock Sholmes

2

u/FlaconDeProut 4h ago

Except that this lonely and hot detective IS Sherlock Holmes. Herr Locke is just his name in English location to avoid copyrights so they took this reference !!! So he's a different case maybe ?

1

u/Just-Antelope-8069 2h ago

I'm pretty sure that's the case for both.

2

u/FlaconDeProut 2h ago

It is but in Arsène Lupin case, the original name IS Herlock Sholmes (for avoiding rights at first but it stays that name no matter the localisation) In TGAA case it's not his original name

0

u/Just-Antelope-8069 2h ago

Ah I see. Because I had Great Ace Attorney in mind I kept thinking of the Lupin the Third Anime instead of the original Arsene Lupin novels.

3

u/TuxedoGin 7h ago

Dang ya beat me to it.

26

u/The_Vatsu 7h ago

Abrams he's a good muscular demon wearing a trench coat and wielding a huge handgun, but he's blue so he's obviously not Hell Boy.

3

u/DrumBxyThing 7h ago

What's he from?

2

u/JollyCrapBasket 6h ago

Valve's new 6v6 Hero Shooter/MOBA; Deadlock. It's heat, you should look into it

1

u/muffpuff89 2h ago

not a demon, an Ixian

Jerome and Jeremiah Valeska are totally not the Joker. Yet.

9

u/VegetableDaikon4 6h ago

Don't forget Echo, the legally distinct harlequin henchwoman.

17

u/Brookings18 7h ago

Mickey Mouses entire creation was because Walt Disney lost the rights to Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, so for the first bit of his existence Mickey was "legally distinct Oswald with sound"

https://giphy.com/gifs/l2JhL0Gpfbvs4Y07K

4

u/Philaharmic01 7h ago

Don’t you mean, steam boat Willy 😂

1

u/ThatWasFred 6h ago

Willy was the name of the boat, never the mouse!

1

u/Chentzilla 2h ago

Not if you realize it parodies the title of the movie Steamboat Bill, Jr., which itself alludes to the name of the song Steamboat Bill. In both of these, "Steamboat" is the nickname of a steamboat owner. So the plausible explanation for the title is that Mickey, the cartoon star, plays the role of this guy named Steamboat Willie.

u/LeastEar 7h ago

"🎶We resemble but are legally distinct from the lollipop guild 🎶"

13

u/Jak3R0b 7h ago

Just because the Spider is a dark and brooding avenger who kills his enemies with two guns, wears a fedora and suit with a cape, and lives in New York doesn't mean he's based on the Shadow.

13

u/lifebeginsat9pm 7h ago

Akira “Not Ryu” Yuki, from Virtua Fighter.

Though to be fair, the fighting styles are nothing alike.

5

u/Dragon0fPeace4002 7h ago

Tbf early fighting game protagonist range from “I wanna fight strong people to be stronger” to “I’m on quest for revenge for my significant other.”

4

u/lifebeginsat9pm 7h ago

https://giphy.com/gifs/r0ur6dc1rMVL7RSYkl

And then there’s Kazuya Mishima who was on that revenge quest but basically became M. Bison after he succeeded

11

u/MonitoliMal 7h ago

Herlock Sholmes from The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles (Also John Wilson from the same game)

5

u/VishnuBhanum 7h ago

In the original Japanese, he is straight up Sherlock Holmes.

2

u/TuxedoGin 7h ago

Ironically Herlock Sholmes is also written in for a 'crossover' with Lupin Arsène by THE Maurice Leblanc. It's legit!

2

u/ValWondergroove 4h ago

What a funny is that in an earlier Ace Attorney game someone directly references Sherlock Holmes

Which makes the existence of Herlock Sholmes even funnier

1

u/MonitoliMal 3h ago

And then in Dual Destinies, there's another Sherlock Holmes namedrop, but it gets editted to "Herlock Shomes" in the remaster

10

u/Professional_Boss438 7h ago

He started as a legally distinct "El Zorro"

2

u/Bhavs-- 7h ago

And wayne family went to see zorro movie in theatre if I remember?

3

u/empty_other 5h ago

Was a later addition, not original.

1

u/CountingOnThat 4h ago

IIRC, Batman’s first comic-book story is a rewrite of one featuring The Shadow.

1

u/empty_other 5h ago

It was really a bunch of these kinds of heroes popping up right around this time that inspired Batmans creators, and Zorro was not even the primary inspiration.

They again was inspired by the anti-hero Spring-Heeled Jack stories from the penny dreadfuls, who started out as a rumored ghost in actual newspapers.

I prefer The Phantom personally. He's so much more optimistic, and has no fear of guns while still having respect for their use.

7

u/VishnuBhanum 7h ago

The entire Watchmen line-up was made as a substitute for Charlton comics characters.

Funnily enough, DC later made Earth 4, Featuring Pax Americana. Basically "What if Watchmen actually used Charlton Comics characters like they originally intended"

Captain Atom - Dr.Manhattan

Peacemaker - Comedian

Question - Rorschach

Blue Beetle - Nite-Owl

Nightshade - Silk Spectre

Though the guy who is supposed to be Ozymandias equivalent(Thunderbolt) wasn't on the team.

1

u/Misplaced_Fan_15 7h ago

I think part of the reason Thunderbolt was not on the team is that Peter Cannon is actually owned by the estate of his original writer.

6

u/fly_line22 6h ago

Ben 10 has more than a few aliens based on other properties. But one of the most blatant goes to Way Big, who is based off of Ultraman. Whether it be his gigantic size, his color scheme, the head fin, you name it. And as time went on, it became even more obvious. It's revealed that Way Big's species name is To'kustar, a play off of tokusatsu, the style of Japanese special effects that Ultraman helped pioneer. He also has the ability to fire a laser by crossing his arms, just like various Ultras. And then Omniverse decided to just give him a Japanese accent.

6

u/JazzmatazZ4 4h ago

Agent Spider is actually SUPPOSED to be Spider Man

5

u/PokesBo 7h ago

Grant Morison wanted to use John Constantine in Doom Patrol. DC no. So Grant Morison created the very distinct Willoughby Kipling.

4

u/IllLynx562 6h ago

See also, Ambrose Bierce, used when both Kipling and Constantine couldn't be used and I'm pretty sure is supposed to look like David Bowie

3

u/IcyFoundation9786 6h ago

The Doom Patrol show is so fun cause you see this guy use the most Constantine tricks ever, but they’re slightly less nihilistic so it’s not him.

2

u/PokesBo 6h ago

I really need to finish it. I absolutely loved it and definitely helped spark my return to comics

4

u/Deemo3 7h ago edited 7h ago

Duck Tales (2017) wasn’t allowed to use a certain cartoon mouse so their solution was to strand Donald on and island and have him go full Castaway with Mikey Melon, complete with having the melon voiced by Chris Diamantopoulos.

4

u/Dr-Chaos562 6h ago

All the Remedy games take place in the same universe and Alan Wake 2 puts this into overdrive. However they don't own the rights to some characters so they work around that by creating legally distinct versions of them and using the same face models and voice actors (if possible). The most prominent are:

Max Payne = Alex Casey

Jack Joyce (Quantum Break) = Tim Breaker

Martin Hatch (Quantum Break) = Warlin Door (now portrayed by David Harewood due to Lance Reddick passing away in early 2023)

4

u/VegetableDaikon4 6h ago

Red Tool (DC)

A parody of Deadpool (Marvel), who was himself a parody of Deathstroke (DC).

2

u/Wemblin_the_Wizard 2h ago

I think his text boxes being shaped like construction tools is fun.

3

u/TheTinanard 7h ago

Kirkman got the rights when he did the Invincible x Spider-man in the comics, and the sequence is even longer, with the whole "With great powers come great responsabilities" speech, which helped Invincible in his fight against Angstrom. And you guess it, he did not get the right for the TV shows. That being said, Agent Spider do talks about knowing all the weird stuff that dimension travel is about, which link him to either Into the Spider Verse or No Way Home.

4

u/Frankenstein____ 7h ago

Brother, you might think that's Hulk Hogan and Macho Man Randy Savage appearing on WWF television after they left the company in the early 90s. But you see that's actually the Huckster and the Nacho Man working for their boss, Billionaire Ted, who is in no way shape or form related to the billionaire who owned WWF's main competition, WCW, and employed the actual Hulk Hogan and Macho Man.

2

u/TheOmegaFan 6h ago

Venture Bros has a LOT of these but one of the most prominent is Action Johnny, an aged up Jonny Quest parody. Funnily enough, he was only made because, while Cartoon Network owned the rights to Jonny Quest, the writers assumed that they wouldn't be allowed to use him but were later told they could. Even more interesting is that an actual Jonny Quest character, Race Bannon, actually DOES appear and die in one episode a whole season before Johnny appeared.

u/Jennywolfgal 5h ago

Beelzebub's full demon/true form, from Helluva Boss , very xenomorph queen-like

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles being parodies of Daredevil and its cast. EG: the enemy ninja clan called “The Hand” in Daredevil and “The Foot” in TMNT

1

u/Financial-Creme 7h ago

Just about every character in The Boys and Invincible

1

u/Just-Antelope-8069 7h ago

Black Spider might be an already established DC character but the one from Young Justice is basically a legally distinct Spider-Man.

1

u/Trytostaygood 6h ago

The Revengers in DC and Squadron Supreme in Marvel

1

u/Electrical_mammoth2 6h ago

There is Bat-man in the Manga One Piece.

He isn't based on the batman you know, and is actually capable of flight thanks to the Bat SMILE fruit he ate.

1

u/ThatWasFred 6h ago

30 Rock. Jenna is starring in a Janis Joplin biopic, but Joplin’s estate does not give them the rights to her name or likeness. So they try Janet Jopler, Janie Jimplin, and finally settle on Jackie Jormp-Jomp as their legally-distinct alternative.

1

u/Carvinesire 5h ago

Rorschach was deliberately made to parody The Question, and the weird moral certainty that his creator seemed to have the character operate under.

Initially, the idea for Watchmen was based on Charlton Comic heroes, but DC acquired them so Moore was asked to make original characters.

If I recall, All of the Watchmen heroes were based off of other heroes. I always thought Rorschach was meant to be Batman, but I'm pretty sure he actually helped inspire the grittier 'Dark Knight' we have now.

Rorschach - The Question Dr. Manhattan - The Atom Nite Owl - Blue Beetle The Comedian - Peacemaker Ozymandius - Thunderbolt, Peter Cannon Silk Spectre - Nightshade

1

u/Carvinesire 5h ago

Pretty on the nose who Winslow Leach was meant to resemble, but the whole story is a conglomerate of:

The Picture of Dorian Grey Faust Phantom of the Paradise.

While it has never been confirmed to my knowledge, Griffith's helmet in Berserk very closely resembles the Phantom's from this movie, pictured above.

1

u/itzshif 5h ago

Shary Bobbins from the Simpsons. Completely unique character like Rickey Rouse and Monald Muck.

1

u/Opening-Biscotti-127 5h ago

The Ark Rangers (NIKKE)

1

u/majorjoe23 2h ago

So many characters on The Venture Bros.

how about this post being legally distinct from all the other million times this topic has been posted because the title is worded in a slightly different way 🙄
