Main characters of Slay the Princess

At least that's one of the ways to interpret it with Narrator's explanation about the rough tear and how each of them carry a piece of the other inside

27

u/Honeyfoot1234 1h ago

I never even realized the YinYang symbolism there, I knew there were two halves of the Endless Cycle, but I thought the piece of eachother thing was just so they could exist in stable form, and also their pure white and pure black bodies, how did I not get this sooner?!

8

u/Oktavia-the-witch 1h ago

Because your first thought is that the white, stands for innocense and cleanness and that she is completly white looks at first just as a artstyle choice

7

u/arika-feinberg 1h ago

For me moment of Yin-Yang realization was when Narrator told that thing about the rough tear and when I realized that the Princess and the Voices you get in each chapter always complement each other in some way

4

u/Honeyfoot1234 1h ago

I just thought her being pure white like that was how she actually looked and even if you put her out of the construct she would still be grayscale

Lord Garmadon and Sensei Wu(Ninjago): Both have the powers of creation and destruction but Garmadon leans to destruction while Wu leans to creation.

20

u/GloomyOwl54 1h ago

Ninjago handled that dynamic surprisingly well for a LEGO show .

u/AttackOficcr 1h ago

Had all the experience built up from Bionicle /s well actually seriously that was a recurring element of everything Bionicle too.

I wish they developed the whole Oni species a lot more than what we got.

Raava and vaatu also from avatar series

27

u/Android_mk 1h ago

Sadly Vaatu has no nuance as hes purely evil with no good within him

17

u/romcarlos13 1h ago

I hate how they just made Vaatu like a straight up devil figure.

7

u/FrenchTantan 1h ago

Same. I hated it so much that it inspired me to create deities of Order and Chaos in the cosmology of my dnd world that are considered neutral forces of nature, neither evil nor good.

I even wrote a whole era, before sentient life was even a thing, when after eons of fighting, they figured out their complementarity. They cannot exist without the other.

I honestly believe (and hope) the current ongoing Avatar series will actually go into this more. It's got a perfect set up to expand here too. It's a good place to amend the lore or even full blown retcon Vaatu just being pure evil. I honestly think it's more in tune with the rest of the lore the series has went on to establish.

17

u/FrenchTantan 1h ago

Technically (at least so far) these two are a bit different since Vaatu was portrayed as simply evil, whereas the whole Yin and Yang thing is more about balance and complementarity. There is a notion of opposition, but usually neither side is considered "the wrong one".

Vaatu was objectively wrong. He wanted to destroy everything, control the spirits, and bring about darkness and chaos to the world. Some could argue that him being destroyed by Raava, and then imprisonned for 10 thousand years led to frustration, and anger, but unfortunately, those are headcanons that are not made clear in the show (again, not yet, maybe the new show will explore that).

Ramattra and Zenyatta (Overwatch)

First of all, they symbolize Yin and Yang through opposite colours (Purple and Yellow)

Second of all, in ideologies (Peace through violence and peace through uhh... peace)

And in far more.

They are opposites, but fill eachother in. They're even great friends in lore! Ramattra has a lot of kindness in him, symbolizing the Yang inside Yin, while Zenyatta is great at undermining people psychologically (symbolizing the Yin inside the Yang)

Hell, Blizzard even made a spray out of it

I love them so much man

"Experience tranquility"

22

u/Tweed_Man 1h ago

Not quite but it gives me a chance to talk about how much I love these two.

4

u/PerspectivePale8216 1h ago

How much do you love these two?

7

u/Tweed_Man 1h ago

Sooo much. They're my favourite 2 pocket monsters.

4

u/PerspectivePale8216 1h ago

Understandable. Was kinda expecting several long ass paragraphs honestly explaining it but that works too

2

u/Tweed_Man 34m ago

So I says to myself, I says, who'd be asking you to write a paragraph about Pokemon at this hour. And if I hadn't been in the middle of a Soul Silver game I probably would've slept through it. Silver, the original that is, was my first Pokemon game and when I got an Eevee my friend, Alex his name was, suggested I put in the day care to get more. So later I got a younger Eevee. The mother, she's an Eevee but the father he was a Ditto, although not on the scene by all accounts. Leaving the trainer, me that is, to raise the wain all on my own, which I did. So in order to evolve it, that is to say the Eevee, you need friendship to level it up, which requires a lot of grinding and the occasional hair cut. So I says, says I, I'd like to see these two new Pokemon and grind outside of Goldenrod until that did, evolve I mean. I then use them to beat Whitney, the gym leader she was, after her Miltank had beaten me before in a battle. And my Umbreon and Espeon, who'd I just evolved, finally won the battle for me but she, Whitney I mean, wouldn't give me the gym badge which didn't make much sense since I'd just beaten her. Madder than a sack of Meowths, that one.

Then there's Pokemon Colosseum for the Gamecube...

u/PerspectivePale8216 32m ago

Outside of this feeling a bit like a copypasta for some odd reason this is more what I was expecting

2

u/Tweed_Man 30m ago

I'd advise watching the TV show Derry Girls.

1

u/PerspectivePale8216 30m ago

I see... I'll considering it.

5

u/Longjumping-Buy-3434 56m ago

I could see why you would put them in this category. One can evolve in the day, and one can evolve in the night.

Yun and Yang from Street Fighter

14

u/AlishaGray 1h ago

In RWBY, the first time Lai Ren was shown fighting, it was against a giant snake Grimm called a King Taijitu, which had two heads instead of a head and tail. One head is white with black markings (and the usual Grimm red markings), the other is black with white markings, and the body fades from one to the other around the middle. When it is coiled up, it resembles a yin/yang. The word 'Taijitu' also literally refers to the concept of yin and yang. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taijitu)

Ornstein (good) and Smough (evil)
One is an honorable dragon hunter, the other is a cannibal executioner. If Smough dies, Ornstein honors his death before absorbing his essence. If Ornstein dies, Smough crushes his body with his hammer with no emotion.

And speaking of Avatar, there's Raava and Vaatu in the sequel series Legend of Korra, whoare revealed and explained in that episode about the origins of the Avatar.

9

u/kmasterofdarkness 1h ago

Sadly, they were portrayed as good vs evil instead of being allowed to have nuance. The status quo of either of them winning should have been more akin to Dark Souls with the Age of Fire and Age of Dark.

They were more like God and Satan

Blake and Sun (v1-5) or Yang (v1, 3, 6-9) (RWBY)

apparently these three don't have a group photo so I just took their wiki imgs

2

u/PerspectivePale8216 1h ago

Something about these images is just... Off to me. Not like they're bad in any specific way just... off

2

u/Far-Mammoth-3214 45m ago

well one has Sun in the new art style while Blake and Yang are in the old style

2

u/PerspectivePale8216 45m ago

That might explain it

6

u/yee_qi 1h ago

Reshiram and Zekrom - though the games seem to be conveying the idea that yin and yang aren't so opposite after all...

Ventus and Vanitas (Kingdom Hearts)

0

u/HenTie3467 1h ago

To explain for those who don't know, Ventus's former master literally extracted the darkness from Ventus, creating Vanitas from that darkness. Because Ventus had the darkness extracted from him, he himself is pure light whilst Vanitas is pure dark.

u/KuraMaXKamikaZed 1h ago

I remember that Lilo and Stich episode.

Yin yang from inanimate insanity

3

u/CassetteMeower 55m ago

My cat Callie has a yin yang on her cheek. Black patch with an orange spot and an orange patch with a black spot. Does she count?

2

u/DKUnderdog 1h ago edited 41m ago

Inanimate Insanity has the character(s) called Yin Yang who are living badge and they often usually argue with each other and were one of most popular characters on the show they had get rid immunity vote because of their popularity and when they finally did connect with each other they got eliminated.

1

u/datbanditnamedsam 1h ago

Would this count for every character with an evil twin?

6

u/Accomplished_Joke_24 1h ago

the yin and yang arent evil vs good, its just to opposing ideas that co exist, like water and fire, dark and light, etc etc.

good and evil are constructs that the universe doesn't care of.

1

u/Mesmercat 59m ago

The modern interpretation being balance is interesting when the ancient ones was more adapting to the cycles. Knowing when to not farm during winter etc...

Visually, they are light with a dark face and dark with a glowing white face. Fundamentally Prince is negative karmic energy while Weaver is positive karmic energy. The Rot consumes as new paths are woven.

Vorlons and Shadows from Babylon 5. One pursues order and discipline, the other chaos and strife. Ideally both would be working to guide the younger races and help them grow, but by the time of the show they’re more interested in besting each other with the other races caught in the middle.

Not really.

Satan is lesser then God , since he is most likely Lucifer , one of archangels of God.

And a being made by god could never truly challange them.

u/magos_with_a_glock 1h ago

And in the original jewish tradition he's more of an evil advisor and/or friendly rival than an actual opposite.
