My mangoes 😄

No idea if this will work but I left the ones I couldn't reach for the fruit bats and possums to fight over 😄

The only thing bats and I have in common is our love of eating a good mango in the summer-time

Those paper bags won't stop me mate 😆

Thanks, might seem some more myself. Got a ton of baby mangoes on the tree ATM, be interesting to see how many survive.

Mine had flowers all over them a few months ago now they have all dried up and no mangos on any of the 3 trees :(

I'm drooling. This sub was suggested to my mango loving Victorian ass just to taunt me :( lol

Are mangoes common in FNQ?

Pretty much every old-school Queenslander house in Townsville had a big old Mango tree in the back-yard 🙂 if you have acreage like we do, multiple! They grow well here.

I remember the big trees in the middle of the oval when I was a kid in Paramatta Park State School in Cairns.

Pick them before they’re ripe. They’ll actually taste better and the bats and possums won’t get as many.

You want them to be fat and smooth.  Look at them now and you’ll see they’re actually bumpy with little white pimples called lenticels. When the mango ripens these lenticels become less pronounced and some turn black (a bit like blackheads on human skin). As they become less pronounced the skin becomes smoother.

If the mango is in direct sunlight, it will turn brown (like a tan) and then the brown will turn red (referred to as blush). Make sure it is red or deep pink and not a shade of brown. Remember if the mango is not in direct sunlight it will never turn red/pink. It will just go from green to yellow.

If you pick it like this (shaded: fat and smooth; or sun exposed: red/pink blush) it will still be rock hard but inside the flesh is yellow and it will ripen beautifully. Ripening on the tree gives you inferior fruit and more susceptibility to wildlife! Also leave some stem on for a few days to avoid sap.

does it depend in the type of mango though? or most varieties do this?

This is specific to KP / Bowen. Other varieties differ. R2E2 for example should be picked neared to ripe otherwise they taste very bland.

Good luck. Everytime I put bags on fruit the bats just suck through the bags like they dummies 😂😂😂

My dad used diesel or kero dipped rags hanging in milo cans in his trees. The odor masked ripe fruit smell

Never going to get as good as in South Asia. Australian mangoes shouldn’t be called mangoes. It’s an insult to Mangoes.
