This week's song of the week is the newly released "The Greatest Show on Earth", the third single from U2's upcoming album, Carnival De Luz. Through this multivalent phrase, the band not only announces their upcoming tour in style (and looks back with nostalgia on a long career), but casts the die in terms of a kind of humanistic ethos--"WE were once the greatest show on earth"...
To me, this comes as almost a sequel to one of the band's other recent singles (which came, as well, as a sort of love letter to the audience and playing live): Atomic City, "I'm front row in Las Vegas And there's a big one on tonight." The track also fits the album's "Carnival" ethos--it shares a name with a 1952 technicolor circus film of the same name directed by Cecil B. DeMille.
The song's music video was directed by Anton Corbijn: I'm not sure what is going on there, but it is evocative. Some online have pointed out it might be a sequel to the All I Want Is You music video. The costumes remind of something out of The Seventh Seal.

Comments from the Band
"The Greatest Show on Earth"? Now that's a throwdown. It's a dare, to ourselves as much as anyone, to try and have the best night of anybody's life.
A bit of showman, a bit of shaman, a riot of colour, unreasonable guitar, bass and drums, and tunes you can hold onto.
Because if people are gonna show up, we certainly are." (U2.com)
...
"All that said, the band is trying to come up with a radio edit of Bono’s favorite new track, the five-and-a-half-minute “The Greatest Show on Earth.” “It’s maybe our greatest song in a very long time,” he says. “That was a reason to stay in the band.” The slow-burning, IMAX-sized epic takes on a shattered love affair, with some shots at Christian nationalism along the way (“Is this a church of love or fear?/Have we made God feel like a stranger here?”). It aims to capture some of the ecstatic, crooning heartbreak of “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’,” with a hint of Bertolt Brecht: “Love is a business that works at night/I sold myself for less than was right.” Bono had the title for a long time, but catching Elvis Presley sing “Lovin’ Feelin'” in his friend Baz Luhrmann’s recent concert film helped him crack the elegiac concept for the song: “We were once the greatest show on earth.” “There may be,” he says, unable to help himself, “a version of it that we can get on the radio.” (Bono to Rolling Stone's Brian Hiatt)

Lyrics
As usual with newly released songs, there will be no verse by verse analysis this week (that's three now, perhaps something to revisit at some point). Bono's delivery is emotional. I hear callbacks in there to Songs of Experience: "Love is all we have left", Pop: "Love is not what you're thinking of", and even live performances of "Mysterious Ways" "Touch me...Teach me!". The tone reminds me a lot of 80s U2, a bit more restrained and serious than something like "The Little Things", but with the lingering emotional ghost of a "With or Without You".
[Verse 1]
If I couldn’t sing
How love’s the hardest easy thing
And if I couldn’t sing you my life
Hiding here in the spotlight
And if you couldn’t hear me
[Pre-Chorus]
If I couldn’t feel
If I couldn’t feel your touch again
When nerve ends fray
And there’s nothing to say
Not even a prayer
It’s a beautiful night somewhere
[Chorus]
If I couldn’t say it now
Tell me how
If this is love and love is all we’ve got
You can show me what it is
I can show you what it’s not
If this is love don’t act surprised when you get hurt
Even if our dreams lay in the dirt
We were once the grеatest show on earth
[Verse 2]
Is that a smile or a tеar?
Is it all show business here?
The cinema that is stained glass
You’re at the altar at our wedding mass
Is this a church of love or fear?
Have we made God feel like a stranger here?
[Chorus]
Say it now
Tell me how
If this is love and love is all we’ve got
You can show me what it is
I can show you what it’s not
If this is love, we make cathedrals of our hurt
People digging their dreams out of the dirt
We were once the greatest show on earth
[Post-Chorus]
Love is a business that works at night
I sold myself for less than was right
You taught me what I was worth
In the greatest show on earth
Made a profession out of breaking your heart
You call it lies, I call it art
I was some of your best work
We were once the greatest show on earth
Love is a business you shouldn’t trust
Breathe on me, and I’m love, and I’m lust
Forever or a flirt?
The greatest show on earth
The light scatters, things can get worse
These dark matters of the universe
Could not compete with us
We were once the greatest show on earth (lyrics from genius.com)

In the next hour, U2 are expected to announce, "The Greatest Show On Earth", the third single from the upcoming 16th studio album "Carnaval De Luz". The song will be accompanied by a music video directed by Anton Corbijn, and very likely an announcement for U2's upcoming world tour in 2027. As needed, a separate submission will cover any tour news.

The video shoot with Corbijn involved shooting two different videos, “The Greatest Show on Earth” and “Can’t Stop Us Now”. (“Can’t Stop us Now” is due out in November.)

wow I could listen to this all day, it’s so raw, a freight train of a composition.

I listened to this song for the first time today, and I was purely blown away by how good it is. U2 never fails to amaze me with how good their music is, whether from the 80s or the 2020s....

I wanted to give the song a little time to sink in before saying this, but I just love it so much. I was born a few months before HTDAAB came out, so technically this isn’t true (I like SYCMIOYO and COBL a tad more), but the primary point is that no single that I can remember listening to when it dropped got me this hyped about the upcoming album. There’s just something about it that hits me. It is a fantastic song and I am very happy that I am getting to experience it as it is happening, rather than after the fact.
I don’t know, maybe my optimism for Carnaval de Luz won’t be rewarded, but these are the best group of singles the band has released for an album since HTDAAB. While I’m not a huge fan of Street of Dreams, it is miles better than something like Boots in my opinion, and Silencio is really solid as well. I am very excited for what’s to come. There are already so many songs I like from what the band have put out this year. I think we’re in for treat come November 13th y’all! 🤘🎸
Normaly I take from the books and some short lines on interviews, but sometimes I see people coming with full interpretations supposedly sourcing from words of the band in the same day of releasing of a new song, how is that?
Don't get me wrong fellas, I am not calling anyone liars I just want to check for myself as well :D

Hey everyone!
I have to say I reaaaaaally like TGSOE (it does my heart good to be writing acronyms for ridiculously long song names), even more so because I have a brand new U2 iPod, sort of.
Over on r/iosdev, I saw a post buy a guy who developed an app call NostalgicPod. It's basically a front end for a music player simulating an iPod (Coverflow included). I saw it and installed immediately, but to my dismay there was no U2 color scheme. So I kindly asked the developer on the sub if he could add it, and lo an behold, he did!!!
If your as old as I am, and were old enough to have purchased a U2 iPod and the complete U2, this is a great little app.
Just wanted to share my enjoyment with you all!!
Happy days!!!

According to U2Radio.com, São Paulo is offering a "fan ticket." How it will work is described below:
Ticketmaster Brasil’s updated event map lists a limited “Fan Ticket” option for the March 10 and 12 São Paulo shows at R$500 full price or R$250 half-price. It guarantees admission, but the assigned section is revealed only on the day of the show and may be at any price level. You cannot choose a section in advance, and this option does not guarantee a standing-floor ticket. Quantities are limited; use an email address you can access for purchase updates. Half-price tickets are subject to eligibility rules. We have not found confirmation that Fan Ticket is available in Mexico City or Buenos Aires.
What are your thought on this? I will be going to one of the Mexico City shows and am budget conscious. I don't care where I sit as long as I'm in the door. This is very appealing to me and I hope they offer it in Mexico. Curious what others think?

Do they let you out to go to the bathroom? Seriously asking. I usually do Red Zone because there’s always a means to get away to grab a drink, go pee etc. I was considering giving GA a try for this tour.
A friend of mine swears they keep you in the “pen” until the show is over. That doesn’t sound right to me. Or legal for that matter.

Since Easter Lilly his voice is everything it hould be around 1994.
Not the power from 85, not the power and low from 87, not the falsetto from 1991 but an evolution from what he got in 1993 instead of completly destroying his voice on POP.
Besides better during 2000 and some downs in 2004, it tooks almost 10 years until he get the range back in 2010.
Many people, (including themselfes during the creation of SOS) said his voice was done after years of effort, but maybe now he finally got some maturity on it.
He is the big star shining in The Greatest Show On Earth, I don't know when was the last time I could say this.
I don't know if he can keep it during the tours, but I am so happy so see him like this.

Live in Texas most of my life I've been to shows in Dallas, Houston (a couple times), Austin, San Antonio, one show in Arizona, and the Sphere.
If you could go anywhere in the U.S. outside those venues this tour, where would you go?

Hi all. Hopefully this is allowed to be posted here (mods—if it’s not permissible, shoot me a DM and I’ll remove it).
I’ve been on a journey to get physical tickets from each of the U2 shows I’ve attended over the past 17 years, either because I lost the original one or the tickets were digital.
After spending about 15 years looking for a 360 Tour ticket from the 10/12/2009 Arlington show to replace my original one I lost, I finally found a pair of them. As such, I have an extra one available for sale. Included is a Cowboys Stadium parking pass from the concert as well.
Price: $15 shipped in the U.S.
