How to get hired at UAB

I am a student at UAB and for the past 3 years I’ve probably applied for 200+ jobs interviewed once and have never been hired. I was evicted because I couldn’t get a job and it started to weigh on my school work with me being a neuroscience major I feel like I have ALOT of pre reqs and medical terminology down but Im never getting picked for the jobs the entry level will train me jobs. What am I doing wrong? Is there something I don’t know about? I feel like no one is suffering like I am and my school is doing nothing to help.

You need connections. It’s how I landed my job right after graduating. Build relationships with your professors. Join interest groups. Serve with organizations relevant to your interests.

whenever pre health / the neuro advisors send out an email about a lab or something looking for jobs definitely apply to it. Keep patrolling the UAB job listing site and apply to everything there. if you aren't already, maybe get bls certified if you want a medical job to make yourself more appealing. Looking into a medical or nursing assistant certification may be a good idea too. It's tough out there I wish you the best of luck

I have done that and they will hit me back and say that this job isn’t going to be compatible with my school schedule

You need to reorganize/reprioritize your schedule. You aren't going to find a cushy lab job working 9-5 and you'll be lucky to make 15/hr doing research work while you're still in school. Have you spoken directly to your professors?

You need to get your foot in the door and apply for part time positions and/or overnight, start with the hospital overnight if you have to.

You will get further internally.

I have been willing to do all of this already , should I be asking my professors about job opportunities?

You should let them know you're serious about "whatever your end goal is here" and ask their opinion about what jobs might be good experience, and ask if they have any recommendations. A lot of times they know about job postings before they're posted, on or off campus.

Apply for basic lab jobs prn or overnight and make sure you state your major. Pick a lab and find the director in a directory and email or call about shadowing position you might not be qualified for yet.

Check for patient care tech neuro floors if you don't mind (sometimes gross) patient facing positions. Get to know the physicians and PAs. Become friendly with them, it's pretty easy. They'll be really great references for you eventually.

Sounds literally cheesy af but I've seen an environmental services person end up as a nurse practitioner at uab.

You have to open your mouth and get people's attention.

I got an in as a patient because I made an off handed comment to my eye technician at Callahan. She told me to apply to the position that I wanted(i told her the exact position), and I got the job(not at Callahan).

It's 100000000% about making connections.

Getting hired at UAB is a long process, depending on which department and in need they are in then you will get hired faster. Try to contact the department directly.

i’d get a random job (service industry, at a store, etc.) and get some volunteer hours in, maybe be in a lab. once you have at least some, your CV will be a bit more filled out. also, having connections helps.

U need dat connect man!!!

It’s a good ole boy club fo sho. It shouldn’t be that way but that is the way hiring is. Even at the highest levels like for chairs of departments, they have already know who they want before they are hired.

If you're interested, Children's of Alabama hires clinical assistants to help on the floors and in the clinics. Shouldn't be too hard to pick up one of these jobs, especially if you can work evenings or nights.

What exactly are you looking for, a lab, a full time job, how many hours. I just got into a lab for next semester with a new professor by talking to my psych professors about what I'm interested in researching and reaching out to professors this is my first semester here, I just transferred.

Temp services, seriously! They'll keep you working and you'll meet actual hiring managers and easily work your way into a full time position. Wish you the best!

my lab is looking for undergrad volunteers, reach out to the neuro engineering society for undergrads - they have been reaching out to grad students/ grad orgs to find out labs that undergrads can volunteer in!
