Megathread General Discussion Megathread - Frequent Topics, Salaries, and Rants
Use this thread for more broader, frequently discussed topics, relating to things such as salaries, career changes, rants/moans, and anything else that doesn't require a separate thread.
This thread automatically refreshes every week on a Thursday. Posting in this thread means you agree to adhere to our rules, albeit a slightly more relaxed version of them.
If you answer yes to any of the below, this might be the right place to start your discussion instead of posting a new thread.
- Want to change career but unsure which direction to take or what education you might require?
- Fancy a bit of a rant to get something off your chest?
- Curious about the salary within a sector, whether its your own or one you're considering moving into?
- Do you think the job market is becoming saturated, changing for the worse or not what it used to be?
Rules
- Maintain a level of respect. While this thread intends to allow the users a place to get things off their chest it doesn't give free license to be inflammatory to the point of disrespectfulness towards other users or groups.
- Try and remain relevant. While this thread will be a lot more lax on what kind of topics are applicable to the subreddit, it would do well to remain relatively on topic to the subreddits intentions where possible.
- No solicitation. Don't offer to assist anyone with an issue or matter privately, via DM or some off-site method. Don't reach out to users with offers of help or assistance.
Please Message the Mods if you know of anyone flagrantly flouting these rules.

Hi guys,
Looking for real advice, harsh truths and motivation I suppose...
I am 27 years old, have a stable 9-5 account management job earning more than the average for my age. But over the past 2 years I haven't felt that job satisfaction. I want to be more creative, more freedom, get into TV and film industries whether be editing or animation etc (been teaching myself how to use softwares etc)
I left school, went into an apprenticeship and been stuck in my industry ever since. With no school/Uni qualifications. now being 27, I am worried its too late to look into change and stuck with what i am doing now. I did try open uni in my spare time for creative writing but I felt after a few months i could probably look to teach myself a lot more.
Any success stories of anything similar? What are the challenges people face, what advice do you have?

Where to find legit online zero hour roles? I'm currently ill and can't move around much, and my energy fluctuates so have been able to do an online job where I counted vehicles for the Road Traffic Census, but unfortunately that work is seasonal and coming to an end. I've looked on the usual jobs websites and done searches but can't seem to find a similar flexible opportunity.
I got the job through word of mouth so hoping for some recommendations please. I have admin/events/social care experience but can't commit to a permanent job with regular hours atm.
(I have seen jobs being advertised on Tiktok but I don't trust them as I've seen people have been scammed into working without pay that way!)

Zero hour remote roles is a really small category. You could maybe look for data annotation roles? Other than that it's probably trying to work out a way you can freelance and therefore set your own hours.

I’m currently 22 year old, and a store manager earning around £30k a year. I have a side business generating £5–7k in annual profit that’s growing year on year. Both my job and side business revolve around a hobby I’m passionate about, and I’m partners with my boss in the side venture.
My current role has limited career progression, so I’m looking to develop my skills and increase my earning potential rather than rely on a potential partnership that may never happen.
I’m particularly interested in digital marketing, SEO and e-commerce. My experience comes mainly from optimising Amazon, eBay and Shopify listings and running marketing campaigns through my current job.
Ideally, I’d like to work doing digital marketing or eventually start my own service helping businesses grow online.
What courses or qualifications are genuinely respected by employers and worth investing in? I’d also appreciate any advice on getting into the industry with my existing experience.
I’m keen to learn, but I want to make sure I’m heading in the right direction rather than getting stuck in a dead-end role.
Thanks for any advice!

Dave here, one of the directors at Adria Solutions, a recruitment agency that hires in marketing.
I think you're giving yourself slightly too little credit. Managing a shop and growing a profitable side business at 22 gives you plenty to talk about when applying.
Before spending money on qualifications, I'd pull together a couple of examples of what you've already done. What did you change on those listings? Did sales or conversion rates improve? What budget did you have? A short explanation with some numbers makes your experience much clearer to an employer.
I'd look at e-commerce assistant or executive roles alongside digital marketing roles. Your Amazon, eBay and Shopify experience gives you a useful starting point there.
For courses, work backwards from the jobs you'd actually apply for. Look through a dozen adverts, note the skills that keep coming up and use that to choose your training.
You don't need to wait until you've collected a load of certificates to start applying.

Hi Dave,
I really appreciate the valuable advice you have provided! I am quite new to applying to different positions as this is the first job I've ever had and I've been here for around 5 years.
When you mentioned the examples of what i've already done to improve the listings, would I include this on my CV, or would this be later down the line in the interview phase that this would be introduced?
