I’ve always been very academic — I got straight As at GCSE and I’m predicted 3 As in Maths, Further Maths and Physics. I want to study either Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering, although I’m still undecided between the two.
Originally, I was set on Cambridge Engineering, but around 4 months ago I got put off Oxbridge after seeing a lot of negative opinions about the social life, intense 8-week terms, student experience, and the fact that Cambridge Engineering stays quite broad before specialising later on.
I then looked at Imperial, but had similar concerns about workload/student life, and I also don’t really want to study in London because of the cost and because I already live near London.
So I decided I’d probably apply to places like Bristol, Bath, Manchester and Sheffield, with Bristol currently being my favourite.
The problem is that after researching universities more, I’ve only recently realised how big the gap in international prestige and competitiveness seems to be between Cambridge/Oxford/Imperial and most other UK universities. Cambridge, Oxford and Imperial are consistently near the very top globally, while universities I’m considering are generally much further down.
I’m now starting to regret not taking the ESAT and applying to Cambridge.
I’m considering taking a gap year, travelling for part of it, taking the ESAT and reapplying to Cambridge/Imperial next year. However, I don’t want to delay university for a year just because I’m chasing prestige, especially when there’s obviously no guarantee I’d get in.
I think my main concern is that I’ve started feeling like Cambridge/Oxford/Imperial are the only UK universities with genuinely elite prestige, and I also really want to be surrounded by very academic, ambitious and like-minded students.
Would you take a gap year in my position and reapply, or just go to somewhere like Bristol/Bath/Manchester/Sheffield? How significant is the difference in prestige, opportunities and calibre of students in reality?
