Anyone have experience with the PhD in Special Education program?

Hi everyone!

I’m looking into the PhD in Special Education program and would love to hear from anyone who has gone through it, is currently enrolled, or is in the process of applying.

I’m hoping to get a better sense of the program beyond what’s available on the website. I’d love to hear about the overall quality of the program, the professors, faculty support, research opportunities, and the general student experience.

I’m also curious about the program’s reputation within the field of special education. For those with firsthand experience, what has your experience been like? Would you recommend the program? Is there anything you wish you had known before starting?

I’d really appreciate any honest feedback or insight, both positive and negative. Thanks!

PhDs are all about having a good connection with your advisor/mentor. If there is someone there who has expertise in the area you’re interested in, it is worth exploring. Otherwise, I’d do a look into areas you’re interested in to contact faculty about studying with them.

Are you wanting the PhD for the title/knowledge? To get research experience and go into academia? Depending on what outcome you want, the answer of the university being a good fit could change. If you’re interested in going into academia/research, search published articles to find faculty with your interest area. Ask yourself: is there a specific population you’re interested in? Specific outcomes such as challenging behavior, communication? Specific interventions or academic supports? Then narrow down the search.
