[Release] YOLO26-Depth: A new family of fast monocular depth estimation models

Post image
8 Upvotes

Ultralytics now supports monocular depth estimation as a complete task, sitting next to detect, segment, pose and classify.

The latest release adds a new model family, yolo26n/s/m/l/x-depth, which uses a DPT-style head that fuses multi-scale YOLO26 features to produce a dense per-pixel depth map in meters.

Why unbounded log-depth

The depth head predicts unbounded log-depth instead of the more common sigmoid times max-depth approach. A bounded head bakes a fixed ceiling into the architecture, so anything beyond that ceiling gets clipped.

That becomes a problem once you mix indoor data (usually under 10m) with outdoor driving data like KITTI (up to 80m). We found that the bounded head plateaus after the first epoch on mixed-range data, while the log-depth head keeps improving throughout training.

On the released benchmarks the biggest gains show up exactly where you'd expect: longer-range outdoor sets like KITTI and ETH3D ๐Ÿš—, while indoor accuracy stays about the same ๐Ÿ .

Full workflow support

Training, validation, prediction and export are all supported through the same Python API and CLI you already use for other tasks.

There's also a model.calibrate() method that is provided for closed-form scale calibration on a small labeled split (around 100 images is enough), with no gradient training involved, so it won't touch the relative depth structure the model already learned. Use it when the shape of the predicted depth looks right but the absolute values are off for your camera.

The released checkpoints already ship with a global calibration fit on the pretraining mix of about 2.19 million images. model.calibrate() is there for when you want to replace that with something specific to your own setup.

Example prediction

from ultralytics import YOLO

model = YOLO("yolo26n-depth.pt")
results = model("image.jpg")

depth_map = results[0].depth.data.cpu().numpy()  # shape (H, W), values in meters

Same thing works from the CLI with yolo depth train, yolo depth val and yolo depth predict.

Export to ONNX, TensorRT, CoreML and the other usual formats is supported as well ๐Ÿš€, same workflow as the other tasks.

We evaluated 26 AI models across 36 real-world object detection datasets, including medical imaging, aerial imagery, retail, traffic, and industrial inspection. Gemini 4 Argon ranked #1 in annotation accuracy with 0.565 mAP50, outperforming GPT-6.1 Sol, Gemini 3.8 Flash, Claude Opus 5.5, and GPT-6 Astra.

A few key findings from our internal evaluation:

โœ… Real-world performance: Scored above the model average in 11 of 12 evaluated domains, with particularly strong results in traffic, aerial imagery, and medical imaging.

โœ… Speed: Completed every benchmark request, with a median processing time of approximately 5 seconds per image.

โœ… Cost: At Google's launch pricing through November 30, 2026, the estimated cost is $7.60 per 1,000 images, increasing to approximately $15 afterward at the same usage.

What does this mean for developers?

With Gemini 4 Argon in Ultralytics Platform, developers can generate bounding boxes using dataset classes, review predictions, and annotate entire datasets in batches, reducing manual labeling and allowing more focus on dataset quality and model training.

โ„น๏ธ Specialized datasets like PCB inspection and security X-ray imagery remain challenging, so human review is still important.

How to YOLO: Batching alone is not enough...

2 Upvotes

I just noticed that many people use YOLO batched inference by passing a list of image paths.

While it is a good start for optimizing the pipeline, many people stop there without utilizing the full power of the model and GPU.

The list input interface doesnโ€™t automatically make loading and decoding concurrent.

Those steps can still run serially before the model gets its batch. It might not be a big issue on CPU but moving to TPU or GPU you can lose lots of performance.

I tried various approaches, and ran benchmarks accross CPU/MPS/CUDA. On my Apple MPS, processing 1,000 distinct COCO images with yolo26n.pt took:

Approach Time
Batch with native decode 10.41 s
Batch with concurrent decode 8.61 s

Thatโ€™s about 21% higher throughput beyond batching alone.

The complete guide includes runnable examples and CPU/MPS/CUDA results, if you are using YOLO, give it a look!

Cheers!

Code Review I built a real-time object detection system using Python, YOLOv8, and OpenCV

4 Upvotes

Hi everyone!

I wanted to share a real-time object detection project Iโ€™ve been working on using Python, YOLOv8, and OpenCV.

The application uses a live webcam feed to detect four object classes: people, cars, cats, and dogs.

Some of the features include:

* Real-time detection with bounding boxes and confidence scores

* Object counting by category

* Input and output FPS monitoring

* Multi-threaded frame capture

* A small frame queue to help reduce processing delays

* CPU and CUDA support, depending on the platform

One of the interesting parts of this project was working with threading and frame buffering to keep the video processing responsive.

Iโ€™m planning to improve it further by adding a GUI, video file support, and the ability to save detection results.

Iโ€™d really appreciate feedback on the code, especially suggestions for improving performance or making the architecture cleaner.

GitHub: https://github.com/Mariam-amhan/real-time-object-detection

Thanks for checking it out!

Feedback wanted on my Python real-time computer vision project (YOLO/ONNX)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey everyone!

I've been developing a Python-based real-time computer vision application called ALUCARD.

It uses an ONNX object detection model, custom tracking logic and a Pygame interface.

I'm currently trying to improve the reliability of object detection and tracking, especially when objects are partially occluded.

I've already collected benchmark data and tested different tracking approaches, but I'd appreciate an outside perspective on the architecture.

I've attached a short demonstration video and can share a minimal code example of the relevant detection/tracking logic.

I'm particularly interested in:

- Possible architectural problems

- Better approaches to handling partial occlusion

- Ways to benchmark detection and tracking reliably

- Common mistakes in real-time computer vision pipelines

Any constructive technical feedback would be appreciated!

I built a free tool to merge YOLO datasets โ€” my first side project using Next.js + FastAPI

1 Upvotes

I've been working with object detection datasets and got tired of manually merging YOLO label files whenever class IDs didn't line up. So I built a small web app to handle it.

What it does:

  • Upload two YOLO dataset ZIPs
  • It shows you the classes in each and detects conflicts
  • You adjust the merged class order, then download one clean dataset

Stack: Next.js on Vercel, FastAPI on Railway, no database โ€” files are processed in a temp directory and deleted right after.

It's completely free. The backend sleeps when idle, so the first merge might take ~30s to cold-start.

Any feedback on the UX or the processing flow would be appreciated.

Showcase What is 3D object detection, and why is it important? ๐ŸงŠ

Post image
15 Upvotes

Most computer vision systems use 2D object detection, where models identify objects in images using bounding boxes defined by width and height.

3D object detection goes further by estimating an objectโ€™s depth, position, and orientation in physical space. Instead of just knowing that a car appears in an image, the system can understand how far away it is and how it is positioned in the scene.

This spatial awareness is essential for applications like autonomous driving, robotics, and smart navigation systems, where machines must understand the real-world environments around them.

In simple terms, 2D detection finds objects within images, whereas 3D detection determines their position in real-world space.

Detection is only the first step. What happens next is where it gets interesting. โšก

Meet Ultralytics Agents, a visual way to build connected computer vision workflows in the Ultralytics Platform.

Connect Ultralytics YOLO models with vision-language models, conditions, datasets, webhooks, and other actions to move from prediction to decision and response.

In the demo below, OpenAI GPT-6 Luna is also used to perform basic visual reasoning on the image, adding contextual understanding alongside the detections from the object detection model.

This makes it possible to build workflows where YOLO handles fast visual detection, while an LLM can reason about what is happening in the scene before the next action is triggered.
