Opinion Piece The United Nations at 81: An Increasingly Divided and Turbulent World, the Limitations of the UN, and the Necessity of Its Existence

From September 22 to 26, 2026, the United Nations, headquartered in New York, held the General Debate of the 81st Session of the UN General Assembly. Heads of state or government and other prominent figures from various countries, including US President Donald Trump, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, and Brazilian President Lula, delivered speeches, representing their respective countries in explaining their domestic and foreign policies and expressing their views on various issues.
ㅤ
The positions and objectives of different national leaders varied considerably. For example, Trump openly advocated America First and unilateralism, defending his attacks on Iran, invasion of Venezuela, and sanctions against Cuba. In her speech, Takaichi, on the one hand, called for the United Nations to play an active role, while on the other hand criticizing the "enemy state clauses" concerning Germany and Japan in the UN Charter and strongly demanding their amendment and abolition. Pezeshkian, meanwhile, criticized the civilian casualties caused by US bombing of Iran and the indifference of the international community...
ㅤ
The remarks of these three leaders and several other prominent figures not only reflected divisions within the international community but also contained various criticisms of the United Nations. In addition, the heads of state of both China and Russia were absent from this General Assembly session, with China represented by its vice president and Russia by its foreign minister. This also indirectly demonstrated that both countries harbored certain objections to the United Nations and regarded it with a degree of disregard.
ㅤ
In recent years, the world has increasingly moved toward division rather than integration, with cooperation between countries declining and confrontation increasing. Hot wars such as the Russia-Ukraine War, the……and the US-Iran conflict have caused enormous bloodshed and loss of life. Tensions have also escalated across the Taiwan Strait, South Asia, the Balkans, and several regions of Africa. Competition between China and the United States has also forced many countries to become involved.
ㅤ
Since Trump came to power, the United States, the world's leading power, has shifted from actively promoting globalization and a multilateral order to embracing isolationism and hegemony once again, while adopting a critical attitude toward numerous international institutions, including the United Nations. All these developments have severely undermined the global mechanisms of multilateral cooperation formed by international institutions represented by the United Nations. The world has regressed from a relatively peaceful, orderly, and rules-based environment toward conflict, disorder, and the law of the jungle.
ㅤ
In the conflicts of recent years, the United Nations has appeared to accomplish little. During the Russia-Ukraine War……for example, the UN merely issued vague statements calling for peace, without taking substantive action to prevent warfare and killing. As the United States, the UN's largest financial contributor and supporter, has gradually withdrawn its support, the organization has appeared even more weakened. Under these circumstances, debates over whether the United Nations still has any value and whether it should continue to exist have grown increasingly intense.
ㅤ
The United Nations was born at the end of World War II, the largest and most extensive war in modern human history. At that time, the five major victorious powers—the United States, the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom, France, and China—established this global international organization. Its purpose was to achieve lasting world peace, facilitate postwar reconstruction, establish rules governing international relations, and provide a platform for discussing and resolving international disputes so as to prevent another war. Compared with the League of Nations, established after World War I, the United Nations possessed a more comprehensive institutional framework and greater authority.
ㅤ
The Charter of the United Nations, together with a series of international laws and conventions, also established human rights, sovereignty, freedom, the rule of law, democracy, and other values that humanity should collectively uphold in modern society, while giving these principles legal form, standardizing them, and establishing them as enduring norms. These principles, which later came to seem almost self-evident, were not necessarily matters of consensus before the end of World War II. It was only after the establishment of the United Nations and the formation of the postwar order that they gained widespread recognition and were incorporated into international law and the constitutions of most countries.
ㅤ
During the 80 years since the founding of the United Nations, although the Cold War and hot wars persisted for long periods, and famines and massacres occurred from time to time, wars and disasters around the world have in fact declined considerably compared with 1945 and earlier periods. Even when war crimes have occurred, they have often been condemned. Although major powers such as the United States and the Soviet Union enjoyed certain "privileges," they were also subject to some constraints and could not engage in aggression as recklessly as ancient empires once did. The American war in Vietnam and the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan both faced criticism within the United Nations and other international institutions, and both powers eventually withdrew their troops.
ㅤ
Under the United Nations and the international system it established, small and weak countries have at least nominally obtained sovereign status equal to that of major and powerful states, with their sovereignty legally protected against infringement. When disputes arise or they suffer bullying, they also have a forum in which to present their arguments and seek justice. During the Cold War, although the Western bloc and the Soviet-led Eastern bloc stood in opposition, they did not engage in an all-out war. They also maintained some cooperation in trade, culture, arms control, nuclear nonproliferation, regional security, and other areas, in which the United Nations played an important role.
ㅤ
Over these 80 years, despite its various shortcomings and limitations, the United Nations has made enormous and irreplaceable contributions to world peace and development. UN-affiliated institutions working in security, science, education, culture, healthcare, food, agriculture, and other fields have made numerous quiet and often unnoticed contributions to the stability of the world order, economic and trade development, improvements in people's livelihoods, disaster relief, civil rights, and other areas.
ㅤ
Many people readily notice wars and disasters, but easily overlook the far greater number of potential wars and disasters that have been defused or contained by the United Nations and the forces participating in its work. For example, the rapid economic growth of sub-Saharan Africa over recent decades and the relative peace enjoyed by South Asia and Southeast Asia have both benefited from the contributions of the United Nations and its related institutions and personnel. The achievement of independence and freedom in places such as East Timor and South Sudan, and the emergence of new states, also depended on support from the United Nations.
ㅤ
Therefore, the continued existence of the United Nations is clearly necessary. It should not be dismissed or calls made for its abolition simply because it has certain shortcomings or lacks the capacity to deal effectively with exceptionally difficult problems and disasters. The establishment of the United Nations was made possible by humanity's suffering through the devastation of world war, the terrible price paid by the peoples of different countries, and especially the enormous sacrifices made by the peoples of the Allied nations that fought against fascism. It embodies humanity's vision of harmony and unity and bears the responsibility of maintaining world peace and promoting development. How could it simply be abandoned?
ㅤ
Amid the deterioration of the international situation in recent years, the increase in conflicts, and the rising tides of isolationism and national self-interest in various countries, the existence of the United Nations has become even more necessary. Although the UN, constrained by its difficulties and limited capabilities, cannot single-handedly reverse the tide, it continues to play an important and difficult-to-replace role as a major venue for international consultation and a platform for multilateral cooperation. Disagreements among UN member states and arguments from the podium are always preferable to armed confrontation. Without the United Nations, various international conventions, and mechanisms for arbitrating and resolving disputes, there would be more wars in the world, greater hegemony by major powers, and even fewer avenues for small and weak countries to seek redress. Human rights within individual countries would also be more frequently violated, with fewer opportunities for international concern and intervention.
ㅤ
Of course, the United Nations also needs certain necessary reforms to respond to the constantly changing international situation. For example, when some national governments or official institutions resist the United Nations, respond to it passively, or disregard the requirements of the UN Charter, the United Nations should cooperate more extensively with nongovernmental organizations in different countries and promote peace and development through more diverse approaches. Small and weak countries and less-developed countries in Africa, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and other regions should also have a greater voice within the United Nations, rather than allowing major powers to monopolize the world's most important international organization. A more equal and inclusive United Nations would also strengthen its credibility and capabilities, enabling it to continue playing a beneficial role in this challenging new era.

Discussion/Question (Updated) Women's rights in Afghanistan

In Afghanistan, girls are barred from secondary or higher education. Women are also prohibited from working in most civil jobs and face movement restrictions. They are required to cover their body from head to toe in loose clothing. Women there are not protected under law and can be forced to marry or subjected to gender based violence. Women are also less able to receive basic rights such as healthcare as compared to men. This causes serious physical and mental health issues for women.

I have updated this post as I found another petition with over 100000 signatures for women's rights in Afghanistan. This petition is more direct and relevant to the issue since it calls for the United Nations and other international organisations to take actions against these violations, such as through pressure, humanitarian aid, asylum and reporting.

Please sign the petition to support women's rights in Afghanistan and stand against oppression. This is consistent with many United Nations Sustainable Development Goals such as SDG 3, 4, 5 and 10.

Culture & Society How an entire civilisation can be destroyed without firing a single bullet...

Perhaps the most dangerous attack on a society begins not at its borders, but in the minds of its people.

In 1953, Polish poet and Nobel Prize-winning author Czesław Miłosz published The Captive Mind, a remarkable exploration of how authoritarian ideology, intellectual conformity and political intimidation can undermine a society's freedom.

But his observations raise a question that remains profoundly relevant today:

What happens when a civilisation forgets why its own freedoms matter?

Why do individual liberty, property rights, freedom of thought and enterprise matter to human prosperity? And what happens when a generation inherits the achievements of civilisation without understanding the principles that made them possible?

In this short essay, Douglas Kruger explores the relationship between ideas, freedom, ideological conformity and the survival of prosperous Societies.

RESEARCH TITLE: THE LAW OF NATURE VS UNSCIENTIFIC LAW - WHY NATURE CREATED ONLY TWO GENDERS AND WHY INDIA IS SLOWLY ACCEPTING A THIRD

Student Name: Yogesh Manjramkar

Course: BA Final Year

Place: Parbhani, Maharashtra

Date: 14th October 2026

ABSTRACT

This paper is written to understand who is making laws about 3D Gender in India, why India is slowly accepting it, and what the real Body Science says. This paper is not written with hate. It is written with pure science - from deep roots to advance forensics. The main question is - What is the Law of Nature?

CHAPTER 1: WHO IS MAKING UNSCIENTIFIC LAWS IN INDIA?

Three authorities have made this law without taking a full opinion from Forensic Biology.

1. The Supreme Court of India - NALSA Judgment 2014:

In 2014, the Supreme Court gave a historic judgment. It said that transgender people should get equal rights - Aadhaar card, voter ID, job, education. This was a good judgment for humanity. Everyone deserves to live with dignity.

But the problem started after the judgment. The judgment was about Rights to Live. But it was misinterpreted as Right to Change Biology. Schools and colleges started changing biology textbooks. They started teaching that gender is a choice, not a biological code. The Court gave rights, but NGOs changed science.

2. The Parliament of India - Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, 2019:

In 2019, Parliament passed this Act. It says a person can change his gender by giving an application to the District Magistrate.

But this Act never asked the Forensic Doctor: Can you change XX to XY? Can you change a male pelvis bone to a female pelvis bone? Can you change DNA in blood? The answer is No. So the law gives a certificate, but biology does not change. This makes the law unscientific.

3. Influence of Foreign NGOs and International Pressure:

Many international organizations put pressure on India. They give funding to schools and say "Include gender ideology". Their culture is different. In India, our culture is based on Family and Lineage (Vansh), which runs only on male and female union. So foreign ideology is being imposed on Indian nature without scientific discussion.

CHAPTER 2: WHY IS INDIA ACCEPTING IT SLOWLY?

India is a very kind and emotional country. That is why we are accepting it slowly. There are three main reasons:

Reason A: Lack of Knowledge of Body Science:

90% of students in India do not know how a baby is made inside the womb. They do not know what is SRY gene, what is XX and XY, what is testosterone. When people do not know deep body science, they accept any new word as truth. If you do not teach real science, unscientific laws will be accepted.

Reason B: Misuse of Kindness:

Indians are very kind-hearted. When someone says "We are suffering, please help us", we immediately say yes. We said yes for humanity. But we did not ask - What will be the effect of this yes on a 10-year-old child's mind? Our kindness was used to pass a law without scientific debate.

Reason C: Media, Film and Social Media:

Films and Instagram reels show 3D Gender as modern, fashionable and progressive. A child of 14 years sees it and thinks it is cool. He does not know the forensic science behind it. Media never shows the DNA lab report. It only shows emotion. So emotion is winning over science.

CHAPTER 3: THE REAL BODY SCIENCE - FROM DEEP ROOT TO ADVANCE FORENSIC

This is the science which should be taught in every school.

Part A: The Deepest Root - The Rule of Two:

Nature has only one rule for reproduction of humans. It needs two.

Male provides Sperm with 23 chromosomes.

Female provides Egg with 23 chromosomes.

Together they make a new human with 46 chromosomes.

There is no third type of sperm or third type of egg in nature. If a third gender could produce a child, nature would have made a third type of gamete. But nature never made it. This proves that nature made only two for creation. This is mentioned in Manusmriti 1.32 - Creator divided himself into two.

Part B: Womb Science - How a Body is Made (The Most Important):

For first 6 weeks in the mother's womb, every embryo is exactly the same. There is no boy, no girl.

In the 7th week, nature takes a final decision.

If the embryo has a Y chromosome, a gene called SRY gene becomes active. SRY gives an order - Make Testis. Testis produces testosterone hormone. The baby becomes a boy. Genetic code is XY.

If the embryo has no Y chromosome, SRY gene never becomes active. The baby automatically becomes a girl. Genetic code is XX.

This is the Binary Code of Nature. 100% of human beings are made from this code. There is no third code like ZZZ.

Part C: Then Why Does 3D Gender Appear? - The Science of Variation:

If nature made only two codes, why do we see variation?

Medical science calls it "Variation due to Imbalance, Not a New Creation."

Example: Nature made eyes to see clearly. But sometimes a child is born with cataract. Is cataract a third type of eye? No. It is a disturbance that happened while the eye was being made.

Similarly, 3D Gender is not a new design by God. It is a variation.

  1. Hormonal Imbalance in Womb: During the 7th week, if the testosterone signal comes too low, too high, or at the wrong time, the body development gets confused. In medical books, this is called DSD - Disorder of Sex Development. It happens in only 0.018% of births.

  2. Chromosomal Variation: Sometimes instead of XX or XY, a child gets XXY or XYY. But forensic lab still classifies it as a variation of male or female based on hormone dominance. No independent chromosome for 3D Gender exists in the entire human genome.

Part D: Advance Forensics - The Proof No Court Can Deny:

This is bullet-proof proof.

  1. DNA Forensics: In any police forensic lab, if blood, hair, saliva or semen is found, the DNA test result is always XX or XY. Till today, no forensic lab in India or in the world has a machine that says "This is DNA of 3D Gender". Because nature never made it.

  2. Bone Forensics (Anthropology): If a skeleton is found after 1000 years, forensic doctors check the pelvis bone. Female pelvis is wide for childbirth. Male pelvis is narrow and tall. There is no third type of pelvis bone ever found in human history.

  3. Psychiatry Forensics (WHO ICD-11): The World Health Organization says in ICD-11 - Being transgender is not a mental illness. But the stress a person feels when his body and mind do not match is called Gender Dysphoria. The recommended treatment is respectful psychological counselling and family support first, not surgery first.

CHAPTER 4: WHAT WILL HAPPEN IF UNSCIENTIFIC LAW CONTINUES?

If we continue to accept unscientific law without body science:

  1. Forensic System Will Fail: If a crime happens and blood is found, and the form says 3D Gender, the lab cannot give a clear report. Criminals will take advantage.

  2. Children's Mental Health Will Be Affected: Science says the human brain develops fully till age 25. If you tell a 12-year-old child "You can choose if you are a boy or girl", his brain will become confused. This is against Child Psychology.

  3. Family System Will Become Weak: Our Indian family system, Vansh, lineage - all run on the union of male and female. If we say third can also create lineage, we are going against the law of reproduction.

CHAPTER 5: WHAT SHOULD BE THE CORRECT LAW? - MY SOLUTION

My demand is not based on hate. It is based on science.

  1. Right to Live is Different from Right to Change Biology: Everyone deserves equal right to live, eat, get a job, get education. I fully support that. But Right to Live does not mean Right to Change Biology Textbook. Give rights to live, but do not change the science of the body.

  2. My Proposed Model for Government Forms:

Instead of 3 equal options, forms should have:

Biological Gender (Forensic Proof): [ ] Boy (XY) [ ] Girl (XX)

Additional Support Needed (if any variation): [ ] Counselling Support Needed

This way, everyone gets respect, and science is also protected.

  1. Bring Back Real Body Science in Schools:

From Class 8, teach children - What is SRY gene? What is XX and XY? What is DNA? What is Forensic Anthropology? When a child understands science, he will not get confused by ideology.

FINAL CONCLUSION

Laws were made by people with good hearts but without taking full advice from forensic biology. And India is slowly accepting them because people do not know deep body science.

The truth from root to top is same:

Root Level (Shastra) says 2.

Middle Level (Womb Biology) says 2.

Top Level (DNA and Bone Forensics) says 2.

What we call 3D Gender is not a third design. It is a natural variation that happens while the two designs are being made. It needs counselling and medical support, not a third compulsory column in children's forms.

God made two. Science proved two. Forensics found two. There is no third.

Discussion/Question B.S. Engineering Job Prospect

I am a current student enrolled in a materials engineering program in the U.S. However, I have always been interesting in international relations and would love to eventually work abroad on engineering-based projects through organizations like UN, WHO, WTO, etc. Is this possible to do with an engineering degree, particularly materials (considering a minor in global studies)? If so, what is the right way to go about it?
