[Seeking Advice] Moving to Vancouver area (Biochemistry B.Sc. + US Citizen) - Best biotech/lab companies hiring entry-level roles?

Hi everyone!

I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry (from the UK) and am a U.S. citizen preparing to move to the Vancouver area in early 2027 to live near family.

Because I am a U.S. citizen, I qualify for a CUSMA (NAFTA) Professional Work Permit at the border if I land a job offer in a relevant science role (e.g., Biochemist, Chemist, Research/Lab Associate), meaning no complex LMIA process is needed from the employer side.

I’m looking for insights from locals in the life sciences/biotech community:

  1. Which local companies, diagnostic labs, or biotech firms (like STEMCELL, AbCellera, LifeLabs, etc.) are currently hiring entry-level lab staff or research associates?
  2. Are there specific local recruiting agencies, job boards, or networking groups (like Life Sciences BC) you’d recommend for connecting with hiring managers?

Appreciate any advice or leads! Thanks in advance.

Working at Astra Lumina

Moved over to Vancouver in June and been working with different Temp agencies getting jobs, nothing longer than a few weeks at a time, but enough to keep money coming in and keep my bills paid. Like everyone else, I’ve been applying to 100s of jobs online, forgetting about half the jobs I even applied for!
Today I was offered a job with Astra Lumina in Stanley Park working as event staff for $22/hr. It’s starting this week up until the end of December but can’t find much about it online in Vancouver but seems to be a yearly thing in Seattle.
From what I can tell it would be outdoor work(obviously), 5pm-11pm Wednesday-Sunday.
Has anybody ever worked something similar? I know it will be cold and probably wet work which I have no issues with but don’t know if it’s worth it for the pay and also no clue if the hours would be consistent. Especially considering I’ve been lucky to get some good paying jobs, Mon-Fri, 9-5 jobs with the temp agencies.
Would love to hear from anybody that might have some experience with something similar?
Thanks!

Is the job market in Vancouver actually this bad right now, or is it just me?

Genuinely curious how everyone else's job search has been going lately.

I keep seeing people talking about applying to 50, 100, sometimes even 200 jobs and barely getting a response. Meanwhile, you constantly hear businesses saying they can't find workers.

It feels like even entry-level positions are asking for years of experience now, and the wages being offered barely cover the cost of living here.

For those of you who've been job hunting recently, how long did it take you to find something? And for anyone who's hiring, are you actually getting too many applicants, or are you struggling to find qualified people?

Would be interesting to hear both sides because something about this job market just doesn't add up.

"EmployerPanel" Interview app

I am recently offered a video interview, but this time, instead of doing it on Zoom or Teams, they utilized something called "Employer Panel", which have multiple redflag for me:

  • Only work on Android
    • require download an apk
  • After Install it
    • It asks to enable VPN (!)
    • It asks to allow it to install software

So question: is it a scam, in either technical and employment?

Need a remote part time sales position 🙃

I recently entered as a salesperson at a car dealership. I like it but the company is really sketchy. I feel like it’s a different subprime branch.

However, I like the sales position. I like calling people and like the hustle overall.

I wanna pick up a sales position part time working two days a week from home. Any recommendations? I live in Vancouver and I’m looking for a position that lets me work remote and is flexible with the schedule. Please suggest or share your recommendations.

minimum wages for managers

Hi, Im working as manager of a small jewelry store and have duties like staff scheduling, deciding some prices, hiring decisions with owner-not entirely independent, etc. But my wages are $20 per hour due to slow location and less stress. Would it be okay to count as experience towards Canadian express entry? or it will be considered red flag by the officer, cuz manager wages kinda start from . IS ANYONE WORKING AT 20-21 wage? is it salaried or hourly? THANKS!

Serving/Hospitality roles?

What would be the best way to get a job in the restaurant industry? I'd like to be a server but I can start as a serving assistant/busser to start out. I have experience as a barista/cashier in food service but it was more of a counter-service cafe. Does handing out resumes work? Is right now a slow period for hiring? Any tips/tricks would be appreciated!

What are the chances i’ll get an invite to write the OTEE exam for the CBSA?

Hey Everyone !

I applied to the CBSA a couple of weeks ago, and I’m wondering about my chances of receiving an invitation to write the OTEE, given that I don’t have a post-secondary degree. I understand that post-secondary education is not a mandatory requirement, but I’m curious to hear about others’ experiences.
I have five years of retail sales experience, including two years in retail sales management, as well as one year of volunteer experience with my local police department.
I’m currently based in British Columbia, but I applied for all available locations across Canada, as I’m open to relocating anywhere in the country.
If anyone currently works for the CBSA, knows someone who does, or has gone through the application process without a post-secondary degree, I would really appreciate any insights or advice you could share.
Thank you in advance!

My experience as a Building Manager at FirstService Residential (Nanaimo)

I worked as a Building Manager with FirstService Residential in Nanaimo and wanted to share my experience for anyone considering property management in BC. FirstService Residential does a great job in opening doors for people to this industry and if you stay with them, it will be rewarding.

It was a great introduction to property management in Canada. I looked after a two-building portfolio, one newly built and one established, so I got exposure to very different situations at the same time.

The best part was the people. The Property Manager and the Vice President were collaborative and genuinely invested in helping me grow, and the other building managers were supportive too. If you asked for help, you got it. There was no office politics, just people willing to help each other, which made the learning curve a lot easier. I really enjoyed building good relationships with tenants and resolving their concerns.

To be fair, the learning curve is steep. Juggling tenant issues, vendors, and reporting across more than one building takes some getting used to. But the supportive, drama-free team made it manageable.

Honestly, I wish I could come back to this company. If you’re new to the industry and want a supportive place to learn the fundamentals, I’d recommend it.
