TW: Anxiety / Depression Got called stupid by multiple people

A person posted a video of their toddler wearing what appeared to be a Nike nightgown. I thought that was what it was but it turns out it was an oversized kid shirt. I said thanks to the person that told me and that I didn't know Nike sold kid stuff.

The next morning I woke up to people calling me stupid. Two were memes of calling me stupid. One had the R slur. I told the person that sent the R slur that being rude isn't getting you anywhere in life. Then a few minutes later someone new sent the same sticker to me. I eventually deleted my comment when someone told me I should have aborted my son due to me being stupid and that I should never have children again. I'm really sad too because all those comments had so many likes. Why even be so mean in an innocent video of a cute kid playing around in an oversized shirt.

I've been crying for a few minutes now. I don't know why people would be so mean to me asking if it was pijamas.

Going forward just assume most people online (and in person ) aren't the nicest, now more than ever.

The Internet is filled with bots trying to stir up unnecessary drama. Don’t fall for it.

Dude, bots will have full blown conversations about nonsense not related to what I said in my replies with many likes, it's crazy

We don’t even need to blame bots. People can be rude and mean all on their own!!!

I’m so sorry people were so mean to you over something so silly.

People who act like that are desperate for any way to feel superior because they themselves feel stupid. I hate that they did that to you.

Misery loves company. It is that simple.

They're cowards. They're all high and mighty when they're behind a keyboard, but I promise you they would never say something like that To someone's face. I think that's one of the massive downfalls of the internet, it turns far too many people Into spineless jackals.

People on the internet feel safe to be vitriolic and unrepentant d!cks because it’s sort of anonymous. Especially these days where half/most engagement is from bots with the intention of increasing metrics. There’s no person caring about right vs wrong.

So yes please give yourself some grace. Their viciousness is reflective of their personal shortcomings.

Because you responded to one of them, that response sadly opened the flood gates on you. Some insecure people love to pile on when they think someone is vulnerable, and they see someone else do it. It's sad, it's feral behavior, really. And ... it's not about you ... at all! It's all about them.

Block the people that bothered you, they don't deserve one more minute of your thoughts, not one more. YOU will then have control over who can talk or respond to YOU. Block anyone who bothers you, OP. Again, their behavior is not about YOU, it's about THEM.

I would not give another thought to what a bunch of dummies with too much time on their hands had to say! Delete and block and move on with your life.

I hope you just ignore them in the future! People on Reddit run the gamut. A lot of them are just look for a mistake, even a typo or an incorrect use of a word. I can’t understand why they feel so compelled to insult people.

Please don't waste your tears on social media. Your tears are worth more than that.

This is Reddit, the second most sensitive only to Twitter (I'm not calling it X, never have, never will). People twist your words on here all the damn time.

I guarantee you they thought of your comment as something completely different than you intended and didn't use their tiny ass brains for one second to gather some common sense.

I don't think you are stoopid. You give the vives of a person who can handle themselves.

Username checks out… don’t listen to those ‘people’. There either bots or they have very sad lives.

I must have missed the memo when the r word (assume we're talking about r*tard?) because a slur?

In some places, that's a term of endearment

3

u/EllieDidNothingWrong 9h ago

It is definitely a slur. It's used a word used to mock people with disabilities.

1

u/DevilsAdvocate1662 9h ago

The medical definition is mental r*tardation though? Like, it's a medical term to describe something with severe mental disabilities.

3

u/Senior_Blacksmith_18 9h ago

Not anymore. Now people use it to call anything they don't agree with stupid hence why it's a slur. It no longer means what it used to

1

u/EllieDidNothingWrong 9h ago

That has not been an official medical term in a while. It is out of date. And even if it was still used medically, why would you call someone that to insult them even if jokingly. That's insulting to people that actually have to suffer from it.

That has not been an official medical term in a while. It is out of date.

I work in a mental hospital, I hear that word used by doctors weekly. It is very much still used.

why would you call someone that to insult them

.... because that's exactly what you're trying to do? You're saying that person is so dumb they must suffer from a mental illness?

That's insulting to people that actually have to suffer from it

Yes, that's exactly how jokes and insults work?

You are definitely lying and trying to justify yourself. Or you and your co workers deserve to lose your licenses. Who are you kidding?source

1

u/DevilsAdvocate1662 9h ago

Not lying, and you don't need a license to do my job, I am not a doctor. But I do work with them.

Also, your source is not accessible in my country

•

u/don-cheeto 18m ago

What country are you in if you mind me asking? Serious question.

That word was used for a while but we were taught to stop using it in the US a while ago, at least when I was in school. We use "mentally impaired" or "disabled" or "challenged" or similar now.

I've been called all sorts of horrible things not by people on the internet for the most ridiculous reasons. I'm sorry you had to go through that. You say one little thing, and people act like they know everything about you. No you're not stupid because you didn't know Nike sold kid stuff. And if you ask me I don't think kids should even have Nike stuff because like grow so fast.
