Advice wanted Caring for One Worm

I have a small potted jade plant in my room. I decorated the dirt base with a small patch of moss from outside and discovered after awhile that I had brought in an earthworm (I think it was a baby in the moss as I certainly would have noticed it if it was the size it is now).

It’s been about 5 months and I’ll leave an apple core or some coffee grounds in the pot every couple weeks, and it’s fun to see them slowly get dragged under the moss and disappear. I don’t have a pet so I’ve grown quite attached to this worm 😅

My main question is how damp should I keep the soil? I know jade plants don’t need a lot of water, but I want to give this worm the best life it can. Also, do I need to worry about the worm eating the roots…?

Thanks for any advice!

Advice wanted What is the maximum cardboard piece size for worm bedding?

It takes me forever to rip up cardboard into tiny pieces even though I soak it first to make it tear easily. Could I get away with using larger pieces so I don't have to do as much work? My idea would be to create pieces as large as a hand. Would that work? Or would it mat together or take too long to break down? I would also add a lot more bedding in the beginning and less later on to account for the longer breakdown time of the larger pieces.

Advice wanted Hungry Bin composter - looking for used ones AND the owner of the company!

I've been familiar with the Hungry Bin since it was invented in New Zealand and we have several in operation. I want to get more but I can't get a response from the new American owner. Does anyone know where I can get some that are used but still intact (in Canada if possible), or better yet does anyone know the new owner(s)? I want to offer to buy the company and get these bins back on the market. They are by far the best ones for medium-scale composting. Thanks!

They freak out when touched, but don't really do the snake slike slither. I'm thoroughly confused, because they come crawling on the cement when the rain shows up for over an hour.

I started this bin in the spring and it seems like I finally have a good amount of worm castings. There is not much bedding left. What are my options/next steps? Thanks in advance!

New bin Did I ruin my first worm bin?

I started with 3 worms in a mason jar (12+ fl. oz. / 400 ml) 3 and half months ago. I read that the worms should not live in too much of their own castings, and also that they should have reproduced by now. I thought the jar might not be a good enough habitat.

Yesterday, I moved the worms into a new bin. In the process, I discovered that there are 4 baby worms in there. I went ahead and continued moving them carefully. I tried harvesting the castings with a ⅛ inch soil sifter, but very little actually fell through the sifter. Is it possible there's not enough castings to harvest yet? Did I make a mistake transferring them, and should I transfer them back to the jar?

I found this worm in my vermicompost bin. The worm was wriggling a lot when I picked it up with a stick, but seemed to have calmed down when placed on this wet brown paper. Is this a regular earthworm? Or a jumping worm? I was unaware of the jumping kind, so am a bit concerned or curious.

Thanks!

Advice wanted Coffee Ground Myth?

Post image
80 Upvotes

I know a lot of people swear by using USED coffee grounds with their worms. Awhile back someone told me they noticed less worms when they started adding used coffee grounds and for some reason that turned me off to using them (even though I have SO MUCH). Just wondering if I've built a dumb superstition up in my own head here. Has anyone not used and then used grounds and noticed any difference?

New bin Too much food.

My worms can't keep up with the scraps produced by my house. I use a food blender to cut down the size but this is what I have waiting for them. I have 3 more bags of scraps to chop up. Do you get another tub or stop saving food for them?

Advice wanted In ground worm composting winter

I have a 7 gallon bucket in ground with red wrigglers for the past few months. I am hearing they likely won’t survive a Canadian winter, I don’t mind starting over again next spring because I can’t bring them inside. I haven’t harvested casings the entire time because there was still always either food or bedding still. Should I empty the bucket of casing into my garden this fall or leave the bucket for spring? I’ve also stopped feeding the worms as it’s getting down to 5-10 degrees and I’m worried about food not being composted if I added more in.

Today was just to peek in. I just added a bit of moisture to this baby of a bin. Also, I found a cocoon which I was pretty surprised about. I thought they would have all hatched by now.

Advice wanted Shredded shipping paper

Received a box full of shredded paper, mostly white with some colored paper as seen in the photo. Only appears to have black printing, no color inks found.
Can I use this in my worm bin? I have only used shredded brown Kraft paper and cardboard with no printing so far.

Discussion Cat litter pellets - safe to use for compost?

(disclaimer, I don't have worms yet, but planning to try on a small scale)

We have cats, and in one of our litterboxes we use wooden pellets that turn into sawdust when peed on. The packaging says it's compostable, but I'm wondering if it would be safe to use in compost for fruits/veg.

Our cats have always been inside-only cats (as far as I know of course) so I'm not really worried about parasites. They get their yearly vaccines and deworming. I would also be filtering out the feces. Our litterbox has a sifting mechanic, so no accidental sneaky poops would get in.

When I look this up, comments seem to be very divisive. Some people saying urea is really great for composting, other people saying you should absolutely not use it on edible plants. I don't see any solid proof of the latter though, maybe just the idea of it is a bit gross, which I agree with lol, but I just want to know if it's actually unsafe.

Advice wanted Preparing bedding for new starter worm bin?

Hello!

I just recently set up my new bin and ordered my worms. I'd like to make sure I have all of my ducks in a row before they arrive so they can live their disgusting best life. After doing some looking online I've seen quite a few people suggest preparing the bedding by either using pre compost or inoculating it with soil/castings etc. I have also seen that you don't necessarily need to go the extra steps, as the bin will get inoculated by the microbes on the worms and in the castings they're shipped in. After getting some conflicting info I figured I'd come to ask you fine folks.

Currently I have a 10gal tote with holes, and a bedding mix of shredded cardboard and salt/chemical/oil free coco coir. Should I add anything like food scraps if I don't have any living material to inoculate my bin with before the worms arrive, or will they be fine with just adding them and any bedding/castings they come in?

Thanks in advance for any help. As with everything I do I'm sure I'm overthinking it, but wanted to make sure I'm on the right track.

Advice wanted Temperature Question

Started in 2 27 gal. Bins last week. Worms were squirmy for a d ay, but are fine now.
My latest issue is the temp is creeping up and I’m worried about it getting too warm. The environment is around 70 degrees Fahrenheit, no direct sunlight and mostly dark throughout the day.
What can be added or done to the bins to help keep them cooler?

i made a post about a precompost.
now, like too weeks ago, i set them in the bin together with the precompost-bedding.

i think is semi precompost, semi bedding.
i did one slushy kitchen scrap blend as feeding.

but see by video, tell me what you think
