Discussion Is everything pointless?

A rant about how I find life pointless these days. I’m not always suicidal but if something happens I’m ok with it, won’t fight it. I feel tired and things I used to enjoy, I no longer find enjoyment. Working out, training martial arts, traveling, eating food, or spending time with family. Everything feels like a chore. Most days I’m groggy from the meds. I can’t stop taking them because I have insomnia and can’t sleep without help.

I’m ranting so delete if I broke any rules. Just wanted to let it out since I have no one to talk to.

I was quite apathetic coming out of the infantry. I eventually became a dog trainer because it was animals that taught me about empathy. Having to be on their emotional wavelength to work with them properly. Now as I rehabilitate dogs that have been previously traumatized, I feel like I'm healing along the way. As well as riding, it doesn't matter what as long as I can go fast enough to focus solely on the ride with some risk of danger. Skateboards, motorcycles, electric unicycles.

Sometimes people see a dog react and think it's a bad dog, when instead it's been punished every time it's seen another dog, creating a negative association and trying to avoid punishment.

I say this to many Veterans I encounter in the civilian world who are having some troubles with life after service...

While serving, you always had a mission given to you by leadership. In the civilian world, no one is going to tell you what your mission is. You have to find it for yourself...

When I first left active duty, I threw myself into my civilian career, it was my mission to advance as quickly as possible, taking stretch assignments etc...

Then family issues (sick mother in law) required me to slow down my career and be available for her... My mission became her well being and I threw myself into it fully...

After her death, I floundered for a year, becoming paranoid about the world and cutting myself off from people... It was a dark time and I started to have thoughts that were concerning...

I found my new mission, giving back to the community that afforded me my life, the Veteran community... Now I help run a very large social media based Veteran org and all that it entails... Live events, fundraisers, advocacy, crisis support etc... It has been the best and most rewarding time of my life...

I tell others to find something you are passionate about and throw yourself into it... Make it your mission to be the best you can be at that one thing and the rest of your life will come with it...

there isnt a point to living, you are just doing it. But there are alot of things you can do to enrich your life, something that helps for me personally is providing selfless service to others

The point is whatever you make it. If you make your life about selfless service, that's awesome. Some people make it about religion, others money, some legacy, etc. The mission IS the point. The mission is different for everyone tho.

I am sorry that you are going through all these. I do feel like everyone is going through all this too. All I can say is, I hope you feel much better.

I have 2 dogs but I’ve been finding them annoying recently. I still try to walk them daily and all.

I know the feeling about dogs. I have one and some days I just want her to go away too so I don’t have any more responsibilities. I’ll take her to day care instead and by the night I’m wishing she was back.

This is not the place to discuss medical treatments or to get advice on which drugs to pursue. You need to discuss that with a medical doctor not randos on Reddit.

I hope you hang in there and get a new treatment plan.

I use the VA for psych treatment. Sometimes I learn about new treatments from staff/ patients. I know enough patients that I run into people that can share the treatments they have tried. In my current round of treatment-resistant depression, I have tried a few types of individual/group therapy and I am still struggling deeply. Not quite needing hospitalization.

I asked my treatment team for a completely different type of therapy, and they surprisingly agreed to put in a consult for it.

I didn’t trust that it would get approved, so I found my own way to get/pay for the treatment. Starting soon.

I do keep the VA informed, and do not cut them off, because, well, because I need them.

Honestly, I hope it works.

Keep trying buddy. Depression is real.
