Guide Everything you need to know before climbing Teide from MontaƱa Blanca (Feb 28)

WINTER EXPERT CONDITIONS

Today I managed to summit this volcano, so I'd like to leave some info for those planning to do the same, as I definitely could have used it beforehand.

First of all, I booked my permits for trails PNT 07 and PNT 10 four weeks in advance via TenerifeON, and downloaded the PDF confirmations straight to my phone.

I arranged extreme sports travel insurance covering hiking up to 5,000 m - I also downloaded the English PDF of this directly to my phone.

I packed warm clothes for a winter ascent, a headlamp, high-ankle hiking boots, and an emergency thermal blanket.

Two days before the climb, the weather took a turn for the worse. The forecast for Teide that day predicted 100 km/h winds, plus it snowed and the road was closed. Fortunately, there were still permits available for the following day when the weather was supposed to improve, so I canceled the original permits and rebooked both routes.

Since I flew with only a carry-on backpack, I couldn't bring crampons and an ice axe, which are mandatory under the current conditions on Teide. So, a few days in advance, I contacted the Tenerife Outdoor shop in La Laguna. I reserved the gear and picked it up the day before the hike, agreeing to return it the following day. The rental cost was €20 in total for both items, plus a €50 deposit for the crampons and a €50 deposit for the ice axe.

After arriving at the MontaƱa Blanca parking lot, I had been walking on the trail for about 5 minutes when I bumped into a car hidden around a bend, with rangers ready to do checks (this was at 4:00 AM).

Now for the most important part - what the rangers actually asked to see:

• Permits for PNT 07 and PNT 10 on my phone.

• High-altitude insurance on my phone.

• They wanted to physically see the crampons, ice axe, and thermal blanket.

• They checked my boots from inside the car, but nothing else.

(I also had my national mountaineering club membership card as a backup, but they didn't ask for anything like that).

The whole check took about 3 minutes, and they let me pass. The cable car wasn't running that day, and by 10:00 AM, I had the summit entirely to myself.

(A local at Tenerife Outdoor told me it's better to bring proper crampons, because if you bring microspikes, you might run into a ranger who won't accept them. I had mountaineering crampons, and they were definitely necessary that day because from 3,000 meters up, the trail was covered in icy snow.)

I hope this information helps someone out and helps them successfully reach the top.

Question Coming for New Years Eve… help!

While we have family that lives in Spain, we have never spent any time in Tenerife. That said, we are coming for the first time and would like to know what to do for New Years Eve and where to eat / things to do and see.

I know we are quite late to book accommodation, but do you recommend being in the North or South?

Thank you in advance for any recommendations!

Question Tenerife

Hi everyone! Has anyone been to Tenerife around December 15–16? I’d love to know what the weather is usually like at that time. Is it warm enough to sunbathe and swim in the sea, or is it too cold? I’d really appreciate hearing about your experiences. Thank you! 😊

Question Winter in Tenerife

Hi everyone,
We live in a country where winter cold has settled in again, and my wife and I are at our wits' end. Right now, our daughter is dealing with a nasty cold, and it feels like a never-ending cycle.
Where we live, from mid-October (like right now) all the way through mid-February, the temperatures drop significantly. During these 4 months, it feels like every single child at kindergarten and primary school is constantly sick. One virus passes, and another one immediately takes its place.

My wife and I were talking the other day, and a thought crossed our minds: what if we relocated to a warmer region during the winter months while our daughter is still in kindergarten? For example, somewhere like Spain or another mild climate area in southern Europe.

Our reasoning is that milder temperatures and more time outdoors might reduce the heavy viral load that spikes here every winter, giving her immune system a chance to strengthen without being constantly overloaded.

For parents who live in milder/warmer climates (like Spain, Portugal, Southern Italy, etc.) or parents who have tried seasonal living/moving: How are winter colds and kindergarten/school viruses in your area? Do kids still catch everything back-to-back, or is it genuinely easier?

For those who moved or spent winters in warmer climates: Did you notice a real difference in your kids' health and overall well-being during the winter?

Any advice or reality checks? Is this a smart idea while she's still young, or are standard kindergarten viruses simply unavoidable no matter where you go in the world?
Would love to hear your experiences and honest thoughts!

What is your advice for us?

Question E Scooters?

Edit: Added context, I will be staying in Hollywood mirage which I am aware is at the top of large hill and may need a more powerful scooter to tackle that hill. My main route would be from here towards Las America.

I visited Tenerife around 3 years ago and I'm making a return in November. The last time I visited I really enjoyed riding the E Scooters to get around. I found them fun and convenient.

I've heard mixed reports, some say they have since cracked down and there are heavy fines for using them. Others say they are operating as normal.

What is the current reality? I'm a consciously considerate person, so I tend to ride slowly past pedestrians and will get off and push in busier areas, are the police really strictly fining everyone operating e scooters, are there specific things I should keep in mind if I do use them?

I don't drink alcohol and I don't intend to break any laws and will simply avoid them if necessary, although it was a large part of the draw when I decided to return to Tenerife this year.

If they are still operating as usual, are there local shops that will rent me and my partner out own personal scooters to use for the week instead of relying on the intermittent pay as you go scooters? I found I was often grossly overcharged by these in the last due to poor signal making it difficult to end my session sometimes.

Thanks for any advice!

Food Bars with Nice Decor Near Adeje

Visiting for the second time, and looking for somewhere with nice interiors to go on a date. We're both very into interior design and we struggled last time to find places that weren't very basic and functionally fitted out.

Not a rooftop or beach bar. Just somewhere with nice, interesting interior design.

Hello

On this website the area around la caldera is shown in a red area.

The website does not explain much, But I assume red=closed. Is this correct? Was it due to fires?

Thanks!

Question Visiting with ADHD meds

Hello. I'm travelling to Teneriffe in a week and I recently found out that you might need more than just the doctors prescription for certain medications.
Now I am unsure if I should bring my medication at all, because all I have is the prescription.

I need both Elvanse and Medikinet because my ADHD is severe to a point I'm legally disabled (got a disability ID card)

The information I found online differs, some say it's fine if you take 30 pills with you without a permit, other state that you NEED a permit.

Does anybody have any experience with that?

Question January Weather

Heading to Tenerife for a week in mid-January, and I was wondering what the weather is like? I’m staying in Costa Adeje/ Playa de Las Americas area and I would seriously consider doing a Mount Teide trip. I know temperatures would be cold up near it due to altitude but is it still possible to do a tour here?

Also any good recommendations for food places, I’m a fan of Chinese, and ā€œtypicalā€ Irish breakfast places.

Thanks!

Question Choosing between Tenerife+Gran Canaria VS. Tenerife + La Gomera+El Hierro:

Hi everyone,
Planning a 16-day family trip to the Canary Islands, flying in and out of Tenerife, and splitting our stay into two 8-day blocks. We are active hikers using a baby carrier (no stroller needed) and we love rugged, natural landscapes.
We are currently torn between two paths, and emergency medical infrastructure is the biggest factor causing us to lean toward Gran Canaria.
Our Options:
Option A: Tenerife + Gran Canaria (8 days each)
Option B: Tenerife + La Gomera + El Hierro

Our Core Concerns:

The Medical Reality (Our Main Focus): We are traveling with an infant, and having fast access to an emergency room with dedicated, specialized pediatricians on-call 24/7 is our absolute number one priority. We are heavily leaning toward Gran Canaria because of the major children's hospital network in Las Palmas. For those with personal experience or local knowledge: What is the reality of emergency care for a baby on La Gomera or El Hierro? If an emergency happens there, are you stuck waiting for a helicopter airlift to Tenerife? Is the medical gap on the smaller islands scary enough that we should strictly stick to Gran Canaria?

The Snorkeling : We are not great swimmers who floats easily with a mask. I just want a quick, ultra-calm, 1-meter deep spot with fish where I can easily hold a ladder or stand up. Is it possible to find this safely on El Hierro or La Gomera, or are they purely for deep-sea divers and strong swimmers?

We want to experience the raw nature of the smaller islands, but we will not compromise on medical safety for the baby. We would love to hear your personal experiences and honest feedback on the hospital situation. Thanks!

General Looking for a friendly community / volunteering opportunity in Tenerife (Dec–Jan)

Hi everyone!

I’m Laci, 29, from Hungary. I’m planning to spend around three weeks in Tenerife (Dec 17 – Jan 6, flexible dates). Instead of taking a traditional holiday, I’m considering a more meaningful and immersive experience: staying in a friendly community, meeting new people, and contributing in exchange for accommodation.

I’d love to find an open-minded place, ideally close to nature and the ocean. I’m happy to help with gardening, maintenance, DIY projects, or other practical tasks (ideally under 30 hours/week).
I’m a mechanical engineer with hands-on technical skills and a qualified rope access technician. I also enjoy rock climbing, hiking, yoga, and meditation.

Any recommendations or contacts would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Question Water out

I am currently staying in Costa adeje just out of the town slightly up the hill and our water is not working anymore. It was working fine earlier only in the last hour or so has it stopped running. Does anyone know what is happening or if we are likely to get water back again? We are travelling tomorrow and all need to take a shower! Have contacted our villa manager but they have no clue.

Question A month in Tenerife - yay, nay, and what should we know?

So, my bf and I are considering a month in Tenerife, starting somewhere in January, and I'm (as ever) trying to figure out as much as I can about the place. It'd be a workation for him, so our travel around would be concentrated into the weekends (probably by bus - is that doable? renting a car for the full month is $$), and taking a week off to get a car and do the "bigger trips" then.

Since I work a flexible schedule, I'd love to stay somewhere with nice, swimmable (I can do cold) beaches within walking distance ideally, and obviously the other usuals like a supermarket, restaurants, ideally nice places to take a walk in evening. We were looking at the south - Costa del Silencio area, and they seem to have lovely beaches as well as some hiking trails.

We're keen to explore - hiking, visiting, trying good coffees, maybe seeing a banana plantation, and dig deeper into surfing (if that is an option!). If we choose the south, is it a good place for that, and how are the winds/waves in Jan/Feb?

Final question, how is the island for driving? I would be the main driver and am a bit nervous! :) if you have recommendations, please go on!! Thanks!!

(and yes, i've read a bunch of great subreddits on this, but none seems to hit some of my questions)

Question Stars & Whales! āœØšŸ‹

Hi everyone! My husband and I are visiting Tenerife, La Gomera, and La Palma this November, and we'd love some advice on two activities:

1. Stargazing in La Palma
I've heard La Palma is amazing for stargazing! We have no experience with it, so would you recommend a guided tour or simply renting a car and finding a good spot on our own?

2. Whale and dolphin watching
Where would you recommend taking a tour from to maximize our chances of seeing whales and dolphins? Any recommended operators or tips for choosing a good, responsible tour?

Would love to hear about your experiences and recommendations. Thanks!

Question Visiting Tenerife in December for the first time

Hi everyone!

My family (my parents, my sibling, and me, F28) will be visiting Tenerife from December 15 to 24. I’ve already booked a hotel in Puerto de la Cruz, but I would love to hear your opinions on whether it’s a good place to stay for these dates.

We’re planning to go whale watching, hike (easy hikes, because my parents are in their 60s and they havee never hiked before), visit Mount Teide, explore some black sand beaches, and see as much of the island as possible. Therefore, I was initially planning to rent a car, but after reading about Tenerife’s steep and winding mountain roads, I’m honestly a bit afraid of driving there.

How reliable and convenient is public transportation on the island? Is Puerto de la Cruz well-connected to the main attractions, or would you recommend staying somewhere else if we decide not to rent a car?

I’d really appreciate any advice or recommendations. Thank you!
