Prospective Student Question WPI Student Population

What is WPI’s student population like? I’m from Worcester so I’m familiar with the people from here but is there any difference between the two? I know the male to female ratio is ridiculous but that’s it.

the undergrad student pop sits right around 5300. depending on your major you can def feel the ratio difference between males and females but as an aerospace eng it never bothered me

I plan on majoring in Mathematical Science with a focus on Applied and Computational Mathematics

I recommend considering the Data Science major, since that tends to lean more towards a mix of applied and computational mathematics. You can customize it by taking a range of math, CS, and business courses as free electives.

The math program here does offer a wide-range of courses, but the further you go down the math major a lot of it tends to shift to focusing on pure/theoretical math, especially some of the required courses.

To follow up the ratio is 2:1. When I was there it was 4:1. Weekends it was 1:3. Up to you my man. The education is world class and I am a VP today. My friends are all Directors or VPs.!

Thanks for the follow up. WPI is definitely high on my list maybe even the highest.

I am not sure what you mean by ridiculous. When I was there in the early 90s that was ridiculous, but all the other colleges were the opposite. Because we have an open campus they all came to WPI on the weekends.

What were the other colleges? Also didn’t know WPI had an open campus

There is (or at least was) a Worcester college consortium which made it slightly easier for us to take classes at the other college campuses in the area. There was even a bus that would do a loop a couple times a day.

As for open campus, I knew of girls coming from Framingham state on the weekends to go husband shopping.

The dating (not hook up) scene for straight guys is abysmal and a definite morale drain. There are not women from other colleges visiting campus in droves. You will likely sacrifice in this part of your life while at WPI.

Nerdy, lgbt, introverted, and some very odd characters. Then you have people in greek life which are a little more extroverted, less nerdy and "normal"

WPI has a a good percentage of LGBT 🏳️‍🌈 in their population
I had 2 kids go there
My Son class of 2025
And My Daughter class of 2027
Are BOTH straight.
They never found a “ college romance “
Although with difficult academics who has time for relationships. Right ?
My son was looking for a girlfriend if the opportunity presented itself.
He got discouraged when the girls he met were Les. The girls in Lab / clubs / dorms all had “ girlfriends “
already . Not keen on going out with boys . Now we know 🧐

My daughter has a boyfriend in our hometown.
She is a senior now , but the boys she was acquainted with were
Really introverted or trans . Who knew ?
