Are those wasps? They look like those giant asian hornet things

Yeah this is one of the farms. The larvae sell for crazy amounts. I saw a doc on them about a year ago.

u/Haasts_Eagle 26d ago

Farming dangerous animals because their babies are tasty should be one of the identifying behaviors of a human that aliens publish in their field guides.

Klingons: okay we don't get it

Vulcan science academy: what what?

Klingons: You Vulcans are a bunch of stuffy prisses but you're also tougher, stronger, and smarter than humans in every single way. Why do you let them run your Federation?

VSA: Look. This is a species where if you give them two warp cores, they don't do experiments on one and save the other for if the first one blows up. This is a species where if you give them two warp cores, they will ask for a third one, immediately plug all three into each other, punch a hole into an alternate universe where humans subscribe to an even more destructive ideological system, fight everyone in it because they're offended by that, steal their warp cores, plug those together, punch their way back here, then try to turn a nearby star into a torus because that was what their initial scientific experiment was for and they didn't want to waste a trip.

VSA: They did that last week, we have the write-up righthere. It's getting published in about six hundred scientific journals across two hundred different disciplines because of how many established > theories their ridiculous little experiment has just called into question. Also, they did turn that sun into a torus, and no one actually knows how.

VSA: This is why we let them do whatever the hell they wnat.

Klingons: Can we be a part of your Federation?

one of my favorite tropes that you never see in sci-fi films

266

u/LyraStygian 26d ago edited 26d ago

A: They drink poison?

B: Yes, it can literally kill them if drunk enough.

A: So why do they drink poison? Some sort of religious ritual? Training? Hazing? It must make them stronger or something right? Unlocks new potentials?

B: For fun! It incapacitates them and makes them act stupid. They get together and drink poison together until they are all incapacitated.

A: ...wat

B: I don't know, I'm not a human.

A: You said it kills them if drunk enough? So good thing they only drink a little then?

B: Well actually, they have to drink a copious amount to reach their before mentioned levels of fun...

A: Ok... But they drink the poison just short of lethal then?

B: Technically yes. But if drunk over a long period of time, at those ridiculous quantities, they can also die. But a much slower and worse type of death.

A: Ok, so they only do this occasionally then right? Like a purge type thing where they do it once every year or something? Spaced apart enough to never have to experience this...slow awful death.

B: No... many of them drink poison every week! It's a social thing. Some of them even drink the poison every day.

A: Ok wait. So like they don't know this right? Like no sentient being in their right mind would continue this behaviour knowing it will slowly kill them, right?

B: Well actually they do know. They have centuries of data and experience and know it's a poison that kills them slowly.

A: But. But they still drink the poison.

B: That's right!

A: What the fuck.

B: Cool right?

A: Ok so I'm guessing this is just a very small group. Like a very tiny sub culture of Human society...right? Right?

B: Actually drinking poison is a planetwide past time.

A: ...

B: ...

A: How the fuck are they not extinct!?

124

u/HenrikWL 26d ago

How the fuck are they not extinct!?

Incidentally, the poison also makes the humans more prone to the types of activites that produce more babies. So in a way, there's evolutionary pressure in favor of the drinking of the poison.

36

u/almightyfoon 26d ago

Theres also several different kinds of poison that they ingest as a part of their food as seasoning. Including several that cause intense, painful, burning sensations through their entire GI tract.

37

u/vvntn 26d ago

A: So their vegetation evolved countermeasures to ensure only far-flying animals could eat their pods and carry their seeds. It makes other animals feel as if their insides are being destroyed by star plasma.

B: So why are these humans eating them? Do they fly?

A: No, they like how it feels.

B: Do they enjoy suffering?

A: Not necessarily. They enjoy the feeling, the flavor, and they seem to take pleasure in selectively breeding the poisonous vegetation to become increasingly more poisonous with every cycle. And then consuming it.

B: So they are like the Poisonous Blue Flerf of Regulus IV that concentrates toxins inside its body, and ejects them for defensive purposes?

A: Not yet. Their ejection apparatus is still unevolved and rudimentary, the rate and moment of expulsion are currently uncontrollable, but already very effective at driving away local fauna and even other humans. A formidable bio-weapon in the making.

im really more partial to the whole "gravity on the homeworld is so strong it takes 90% of their mass to be fuel to reach orbit. every single one of them has extreme strength due to the gravity, and they can potentiually heal from almost any non instantly lethal injury" side of the whole trope. because thats really a potential fermi paradox thing that could have kept/keeps us from going farther into our star system. I also like the, "they have such innate 3d spacial awareness that in combination with their innate strength they can utalize any handheld object as a deadly projectile weapon" trope. for my basis in why i like and think the idea that humanity could be incredibly terrifying on a galactic stage biologically has any basis in potentiual truth. because insofar as we can see from most other species on earth, including our closest cousins, the ability to throw things with accuracy (let alone lethality) is very, very rare.

imagine running into aliens and the concept of ranged fighting being entirely alien/incomprehensible to them. or atleast insanely difficult. maybe their computers can handle it, but in close combat the idea of throwing something at them even, let alone SHOOTING at them with lethality and accuracy is just terrifying to them.

the idea of even being able to point and shoot a gun type weapon might be incomprehensible to certain (potential) alien biologies outside of computer assisted technology.

imagine having to use something akin to a naval ships fire-control targeting system just to fire a rifle to hit a target more than malee range away?

it opens thoughts about how space combat could take place. what if in a boarding operation humans used thrown weapons instead of firearms because guns will just pop the baloon that ships are

31

His focus was on weaponry, but consider actual martial arts at zero G or using mag boots in space station corridors.

The best bet seems to be Southern style kung fu, which has origins in river boat combat, so has very compact lines in stances and generating force for strikes. I hope an enthusiast develops a space fighting style.

Funny imagined conversation between aliens about humans (discovered in Quora):

"But they are essentially, mammals. Just like us, thanks to convergent evolution. Carbon-based, bipedal, sentient, oxygen breathing, water-dependant creatures… that’s why we have entered in conflict with them in the first place. We are so similar, that we also compete for similar biospheres and planets. If only these similarities would have helped us to avoid war in the first place instead… I mean, all these scary stories are just war time propaganda. I’m a grown up. I know they are false and you know it too”

The young, idealistic recruit rambled, much to the amusement of her older superior. She had clearly never experienced the human horror face to face. He had to warn her and dispel her silly notions as soon as possible, in order to minimize the much dreaded “human shock” that many green recruits faced on their first infantry engagement.

“Sorry, but you know nothing about humans. I do. They are terrifying creatures. Every single nightmarish story that you have heard about them is true. Every single one. In fact, our propaganda effort tries to minimize and silence these stories in order not to break the morale of our war effort. But there are many, many more stories, and much more terrifying than the ones you have heard. You should expect the worst”. The young recruit was silent, looking at him with an attentive expression.

“Just as you have been correctly informed, humans can survive wounds that would kill any of us. Their blood gels naturally. Their saliva acts like a freaking disinfectant. Their bones regenerate by themselves just by sticking them together, no genetherapy needed. They can lose limbs without entering into shock, yes. But did you know that they can also suppress pain? Their body secretes substances that make them temporarily ignore the pain when under stress. I have seen many of them keep fighting without even realizing that they have been hit by a pulse rifle or by shrapnel. That same organic substance also gives them extra strength in critical moments. Our scientists have tried to synthesize it as well so we can use it in our military units. But they have glands that secrete it at will. Imagine that.”

“Wow. Are you sure they’'re not genetically-engineered ?”

“Nope. 100% natural, or so it seems.

And yes, the rumors are true, they can eat almost everything. Save from pasture and carrion, if they can chew it, they can eat it. Vegetables. Meat. Expired milk curds from other mammal species are a delicacy for them.”

She almost puked. “Eww, gross”.

“Do you know what they eat for fun? Sugar and pepper”.

“You must be kidding me. That’s toxic. That kills and maims many other mammals in their home planet. It can leave us blind. That’s impossible!”

“Oh no, I am not kidding you. They can eat almost everything, as long as it is cooked. Their bodies have an incredible immune system, and their digestive systems have adapted to every single biome at their home planet. Deserts and ice caps as well”

She was incredulous. Nothing grew there. “Why would any species want to move and live into such places?” she asked.

Her superior shrugged “they say that they are nomadic in nature, like birds. They like to move. That’s why they can sustain kilometer long marches without exo skeletons. They are not like us. They can keep going and going and fighting for hours. That’s how they hunted back in their home planet: by pursuing and exhausting their preys. The humans do not relent”.

She was skeptical. “Come on now. Everyone gets exhausted. Predators also get exhausted, that’s basic biology”

“Humans don’t. They almost don’t get exhausted because their bodies don’t get too hot. That’s their trick. They have a virtually unlimited sweating capacity. I have seen many good soldiers boil alive inside their refrigerated combat suits, while fighting humans without clothing. They don’t need all our logistics in order to engage in infantry combat.

Also- predators. Humans are super predators. They killed all the megafauna of their planet at the very moment they learned how to talk and make fire.”

She was aghast. “But… why?”.

“They are extremely violent and vengeful. They wanted vengeance over their old predators, so they killed them all. Except the wolf. They had a far worse fate for that one. They made it dependent from them and altered their DNA. Now it is their plaything. They turned a predator into a fashion accessory.”

“Why? Why just not killing it? Why did they have to humiliate it like that?”

“It’s part of their culture, I guess. They have a war like culture like no other. Their children play with tactical combat simulations. Their art and literature is filled to the brim with murderous figures: Othello, Achilles... Their cinema revolves around humans with even better combat skills than the average human. Superheroes, they call them. Their gods are vengeful, mostly violent and unanimously authoritarian. Their history, their collective narration, revolves around which wars they fought and which tools they did fight these wars with. Their social structure is all based around darwinist competition. Also, since combat prowess determines status in their society, that means that their females always had less status than their males, since they are smaller”

“I always knew that we need to stop them but this is…”

“Oh, fun fact: Did you know that they are born with two sets of teeth? They have “youngling teeth” and “older teeth”. They replace the younger ones when they grow up”

“Now you’re bullshitting me”.

“They also pee acid”. Another soldier chimed in.

“Enough, all of you. You’re scaring her.”

7

u/LyraStygian 26d ago

Haha pee acid, never thought about that lol

39

u/On_the_hook 26d ago

I think things like this clearly show how we've become the dominant species. We harvest wasp larva, we go in the ocean in a cage with meat on us to look at and maybe pet sharks. And not just harmless ones, great whites! Just to learn more about them and have the opportunity to feed them. The only animal we tend to stay away from is polar bears. And not even far away, we take ships right up to them and feed them. We really are an arrogant species.

Crazy. What do they use the larva for?

350

u/DarthLysergis 26d ago

In some Japanese mountain villages, the nests are excavated and the larvae are considered a delicacy when fried.[5] In the central Chūbu region, these wasps are sometimes eaten as snacks or an ingredient in drinks. The grubs are often preserved in jars, pan-fried or steamed with rice to make a savory dish called hebo-gohan or hebo-meshi (へぼ飯).[103] The adults are fried on skewers with the stinger still attached until the body becomes crunchy.[104] Within this region, historically residents would hunt for wasp nests as a social activity, fostering the practice of wasp harvesting as well as establishing it as cultural heritage, celebrated in the Kushihara Hebo Matsuri, a festival celebrating wasp-based cuisine.[105]

I watched a documentary that was in purely Japanese (I do not speak Japanese) and no subtitles when I was stuck in the hospital. This guy lived out in the countryside and hiked a full day to an abandoned village and then just collected those little shits by hand. He'd hit them with a stick then pick it up. There were only like 5-10 per nest, though. Not a swarm like this.

One thing you can do without doing a war crime is to get an ozone generator and a fish tank. You put the ozone generator on next to the nest entrance and put the fish tank upside down over top of the two.

The ozone euthanizes the entire nest. Obviously still recommend a full wasp safe suit since most wasps and hornets will get pretty pissed about you getting near.

u/arbyD 26d ago

I think when wasps, hornets, etc. are concerned, the Geneva Convention can safely be tossed out.

The laws of armed conflict don’t apply here.

I think my favorite aliens are scared of humans thing I read once was someone had pointed out that we breath Oxygen, which is essentially a flammable gas that is used as rocket fuel. I think it was an exchange between two aliens like “So wait they breathe what?” “Straight up rocket fuel. Everything on that planet that isn’t a plant breaths rocket fuel. And the plants produce it. Stay away. It’s not worth it.”

12

u/bjblast100 26d ago

Genuine question, how long do you experience this hell without ppe before you die?

13

u/100BottlesOfMilk 26d ago

With these type of wasp, not long. More than 10 or so is lethal even if you're not allergic. Even one of them hurts like hell and will kill you if you're allergic to them

Aside from apparently humans, what eats these guys? I mean, this looks like it would basically be an ecological dead zone to anything that isn't a hornet with that many in a nest

6

u/LeoLaDawg 26d ago

This is beyond nightmare fuel. A whole other level. The apex nightmare fuel.

Only way this could be worse is if you're stomping on that while in your underwear, trying to give a speech to a class. With a chick you like in the classroom. And your recently decreased parents in the back judging you.

5

The foot thumping is “All your nest are belong to us”

“Make your time”

The wasps “Somebody setup us the foot bomb”

“move all wasps!!!”

u/WhiteKnightier 26d ago

What the fuck does one do after you're done harvesting this stuff? Do you just walk away and hope the wasps get tired of chasing you to murder you? Do you get sprayed down with like industrial pesticide in great quantities? With how these people are basically killing the wasps entire home and killing/harvesting their young, I would think the wasps will chase them to basically the ends of the Earth lol. So I'm really interested in what the exit plan here is for this. Those giant-ass hornets have *got* to be able to chew into those suits eventually.
