Pretty sure I saw this girl's tiktok account and she was kinda crashing out in the comments because everyone was like "pls give us warning next time"🥀
349
u/hahayeahimfinehaha 5d ago
I mean, how shitty is it to be told you need to give a trigger warning for your own body part? It isn't gore or violence, she was literally just born like that. She goes out in public every day, presumably, and unless you're rude, you're not going to gasp in shock and horror and ask her to hide it.
I get everyone saying it's body horror, it looks like a prop, etc., but like ... that's a reaction you should have internally rather than directly going up to the person and saying, "Your limb is horrific and freaky."

In general I don't like people saying things about someone else's looks. I've been bald since I was 18. Over 20 years later I'm still not happy about it. But it is what it is. Not as severe as this person's thing, but she did also make a big reveal out of it. She knew it would be shocking. This isn't her first day on earth. I felt like I was watching a clip from The Backrooms at first. It was unsettling. It would be strange to act like it isn't. But it is something people get used to seeing and hell at least she's attractive. Some of us get genetics that cause us to be ugly and bald and too tall. Just so we really stand out in a crowd.

There used to be laws that would penalize folks like this being out in public...
So, no, our forebears were weak, too.

I think this is really cool. She seems to take it all in stride but I imagine there was a lot of bullying along the way. She is a completely unique individual on this planet and nature is freaking amazing. This is basically how evolution takes place over long periods, random mutations that have the potential to be advantageous to the species.
158
u/Revlis-TK421 5d ago
Eh. Since the trait only impacts one limb, this is probably a somatic mutation / developmental / environmental deformity rather a than an inheritable germline trait. Evolution doesn't really work on non-inheritable traits, though the individual could be selected against nonetheless.

Sadly quite true. But she isn't just cute. She seems to be fun. And quite mature/courageous to make the video. So cute or not - I still think she would manage quite well. We nornally select friends based on who we like to spend time with. And that's also quite often how people ends up in long-time relations.
This arm and also introvert? Now that would not have been any good starting point. This arm, introvert and ugly? 🤕😭

Since she has tactile control of her appendages I wonder if a prosthetic arm of sorts has been tried.
She theoretically could control grip and articulation since she has the ability to input.
17
u/rudolf_the_red 5d ago
i worked in mobility devices for a long time and this is a common theme among differently able people. lots of companies will fight tooth and nail to avoid paying for things like wheelchairs because they are visibly 'gimpy' whereas they will spend thousands more for prosthetics and other things that make people look "normal".
not a dig on you, just pointing out a common viewpoint.

Would it be more advantageous to amputate and provide them with a prosthetic?
24
u/wildflowerden 5d ago
Amputation can cause various forms of chronic pain. Doing it for no good reason is foolish.
Prosthetics don't have sensation and therefore can make it harder to do things like grip objects.
She seems to manage just fine. Her malformed hand is capable of holding things and assisting her other hand. She has no need for a prosthetic.
→ More replies (8)108
u/La_mer_noire 5d ago
Why? She can use the fingers. The prosthetics are bad compared to that and an amputation is an extremely serious procédure.
Amputing would be mostly for looks, not fonction.
45
u/LMGgp 5d ago
There are many amputations that are preformed because it adds functionality. Simply being able to move a digit does not equate to the same level of functionality a person may receive with a prosthetic. Their level of functionality with the digits would greatly help with a prosthetic.
Pretending amputation would be just for cosmetic is just being obstinate. Idk what prosthetics you are referring to as being worse than their current level of functionality, but they are not.

A lot of arm prosthetics don’t work very well and people are well adapted to their disability by any time they could get one. Theres a great chapter in the book Replaceable You by Mary Roach that elaborates on this.
“The sentiment was echoed in a 2022 essay entitled “I Have One of the Most Advanced Prosthetic Arms in the World—and I Hate It.” The writer, Britt Young, was born without her left forearm. Inspired by a news piece, she had splurged on a myoelectric arm with a $72,000 price tag, only some of which her insurance paid for. At an “arm party” the week it arrived, she used it to cut the cake. “And that,” she writes, “was one of the last times I ever used it.”
On hers, a double flex toggles the device through a menu of grip patterns, including one for, appropriately, handing over a credit card. “The ‘power grip’ (a fist) is cool,” she writes, “but, oh my God, trying to cycle through all the modes to find it is infuriating.” Plus the arm felt “heavy as hell.” Everything about it, she says, was exhausting. “Prosthetic arm technology is still so limited that I become more disabled when I wear one.” More than half of arm amputees end up abandoning their prosthesis—a figure that has remained steady in the age of myoelectric options. Many never use any kind of prosthetic limb. Instead they’ve become skilled at doing things with one hand (and a mouth and a torso and two knees).”
