Avro Lancaster – Legendary RAF WWII Heavy Bomber @ RAF Fairford Royal International Air Tattoo 2023.

One of the most iconic aircraft of the Second World War, the Lancaster formed the backbone of RAF Bomber Command's heavy bomber force.

Powered by four Rolls-Royce Merlin engines, it became famous for its long-range bombing missions and its role in the legendary Dambusters raid of May 1943.

I absolutely love this photo.

Great photo.

Having been inside a Lancaster at Duxford, and more recently in the cockpit section at Metheringham, what always strikes me is how little room the seven crew actually had.

The Lancaster was designed around being a heavy bomber, with that long bomb bay capable of carrying some very large loads, but inside the fuselage the crew positions are surprisingly cramped.

Standing inside one gives you a very different appreciation of what those crews actually worked in for hours at a time.
