I took a picture [Caravelle] Field watch appreciation II

I posted a shot a while back of my Rdunae quartz watch in the field on a West Texas bird hunt. This is my vintage Caravelle mechanical field watch on a South Texas bird hunt. You’ll see the family resemblance to the “Devil Diver.” The weather is gorgeous (finally) — clear and breezy in the high 60s.

Discussion [SOTD] 15 years of carefully curating my collection, only to realize I have a very narrow definition of variety… What do you think should stay, what should go, and what should be next?

You may have noticed a slight obsession with black and white, quartz movements, dive watches, and tool watches in general.
After 15 years of hunting, collecting, and wearing these watches, I think I’m coming to the end of a cycle. I wear them all and genuinely love them, but I’m starting to feel that it might be time to narrow the collection down to around ten watches.
Looking back, I’ve realized that what matters most to me is fairly simple: sub-40mm dials, automatic or hand-wound mechanical movements, and above all, slim cases and comfortable bracelets.
So, here’s where I’d love your input: What would you keep, what would you let go, and what would you hunt for next?
And yes, I’m fully aware that my idea of variety might need some work.

Discussion My vintage relic

Post image

I’m here to share the inspiration behind my growing interest in horology: this heirloom, passed down from my grandfather.

The story of this watch begins in the late 1970s or early 1980s here in Brazil, when my grandfather received it as a gift from a cousin who had traveled from Pará likely Belém or Santarém to visit him in Caucaia, Ceará. From that point on, it became his constant companion for the rest of his life.

Fast forward to the 1990s: I was about 5 or 6 years old, and I would regularly travel from Fortaleza in July and/or December to spend my vacations at my grandparents' house. I began to notice the watch my grandfather would leave on the table whenever he went to take a shower the only time he ever took it off his wrist. That was also when I’d get scolded for trying to pick it up or playing with it.

As a farmer who followed in his own father’s footsteps, my grandfather wore this watch while harvesting bananas and cashews the primary crops produced on his farm and it stayed with him for years. I recall that around 1996 or 1998 (the exact year is a bit hazy), my uncles decided to give him a new watch a beautiful, brand-new, silver-and-gold Technos. But he couldn’t bring himself to part with the old relic that had been by his side for so long, so he simply set the new one aside.

Moving ahead to September 2002: after spending several weeks hospitalized with pneumonia, my grandfather passed away. Even months later, my grandmother was reluctant to touch his belongings; she still deeply missed the partner who had been by her side for decades. Eventually, she allowed her daughters to organize and clean out the room, and she let her grandchildren take something to remember him by.
One of my cousins immediately claimed the watch—which made me sad, as I had always thought it was a really cool piece and a strong personal connection to him.
But, to my relief, he was actually referring to a newer watch one that had never been worn because he thought it looked better.

The other one the one that had truly belonged to my grandfather had simply been left sitting there, untouched, ever since he was admitted to the hospital. I asked my grandmother if I could have it, and she agreed. This was back in 2003. Unfortunately, the watch wasn't working; it had sat idle for so long that I didn't think it was worth fixing. It ended up serving merely as a keepsake a memento of a great man whom I admire for his life of hard work and his devotion to his family.

Fast forward to December 2022: while moving to a new home, I rediscovered this relic, tucked away in a box filled with various trinkets and mementos.

I took it to a well-known watch shop in my city, and to my delight it could be restored. They cleaned and sanitized it, then asked, "Would you like us to replace the strap or give the dial a deep cleaning?" I told them to leave the patina and the original strap. That’s not dirt; those are the marks of a life well lived. The restoration cost R$350 an amount that could have easily bought a brand-new, modern watch, as some of my family members pointed out. But I didn't want a new watch; I wanted to carry on my wrist the memory of a man who taught me so much about hard work, honesty, and caring for one's family.

And the rest is history, a story I hope to share with my own grandchildren one day.

Discussion Minor obsession with the minute hand

I have this weird obsession about the minute hand perfectly hitting the minute markers. Thus every time I set a watch, I first have to wait until the seconds hand reaches the 12 position.

Does anyone else has this weird obsession, or am I wrong in the head?

Discussion Windup Watch Show NYC

Did anyone attend the Windup Watch show today in NYC? The line was insane, and my family didn’t want to wait. Thinking to come back tomorrow and try again. For those that waited, how long was the wait? Also your thoughts on the show itself would be helpful too. Thanks in advance.

In reasonably new to buying watches. Yesterday I bought my first watch, the Seiko 5 sports SRPD55 and I really like it. Case diameter 42.5mm.

As im new to watch collecting I'm not sure about appropriate wrist sizing. I think this looks good but there were a few smaller options so just wanting some opinions about what would be the best sizing for me.

Hi guys, there has been some watches that caught my eye in the 36-39mm range, but I have kind of a average-large wrist (18.5cm/7.2 inches) and I think they might a a bit small for my wrist? I don't know I've never tested any watches on that size range, I added, some photos with different sized watches for comparison

Just passed the bar exam, so I’m looking to celebrate with a watch. I’ve been looking at CW for a while and am going to a showroom in a few weeks. I’m looking at The Twelve but came across Tudor 1926/ 1926 Luna. Does anyone have any of these styles that can give me some insight on what they like/dislike about the watches? Additionally, the Biscay GMT is another watch that caught my eye.

John, one of my favorite servers at one of my favorite micro breweries was wearing this little digital watch, so I asked to take a picture of it. Hey, I'm a watch nerd and I embrace it. He's a 20 something, and I like he bought it because "its colorful and fun" and that hes wearing a wrist watch. Not an Apple, not a fitness tracker, just a fun watch. 😉

Discussion Overwhelmed! Looking for womens watch, around $500, two-toned, quartz.

• Upvotes

Hi all, I'm hoping you can help me out. I feel so overwhelmed.

I'm looking for a womens watch, around $500, two-toned, quartz. It's my first watch and I'd just like it to be reliable and last a long time if it can (like a decade at least? is that unreasonable?)

I have tried to look through lists, posts, jomashop, etc. but I am genuinely so overwhelmed.

I really don't want or need anything fancier than the above.

I would appreciate any suggestions.

I'll probably go for a Citizen or Seiko but I am open to other popular brands, I just can't look at more than like...3 brands total.

Thanks y'all!

Discussion [A little bit of everything] My current watch collection!

Post image
12 Upvotes

Thought I’d share my current collection! As you can probably tell, I’m a big fan of Seiko and G-Shock, but I enjoy a little bit of everything.
I’ve been collecting watches for years, and more recently I’ve gotten into watchmaking and servicing mechanical movements myself. It’s given me an entirely new appreciation for these little machines.
Some watches get more wrist time than others, but I genuinely enjoy every piece in the box. My tastes have definitely evolved over the years, and I’ve learned that an inexpensive Casio can be just as enjoyable to own as something considerably more expensive.
No particular theme here, just watches I love wearing!
What do you guys think? Which one would you pick?

Review [Citizen] Holographic

Thumbnail

Simply put, holographic is a technique that allows light scattered from an object to be recorded and then recreated as a 3D image in a laser beam. This image floats in mid-air, allowing viewers to see it from any angle without the need for special glasses. This technology was invented in 1947 by Hungarian-born British physicist Dennis Gabor and has since been further developed by many scientists around the world. Japanese engineers applied this technology to this Citizen watch; the images you see are all taken from a single watch I captured.

Discussion Please help me choosing a watch for my wife!

Hello, I’ve just joined this forum. It’s great!

Like everyone here, I love watches. I’m still building my collection—mostly Seikos, Citizens, Bulovas, and Casios. Nothing too expensive or rare; just watches that I personally like or that remind me of my childhood.

Unfortunately, my wife just lost her beloved watch (a Seiko Tank). With Christmas coming up, I’d like to get her something meaningful. My budget is up to $450—I know it’s not a huge amount, but that’s what I have to work with. I’m looking for a gold or silver-tone watch—something suitable for a formal lunch (she wears an Apple Watch for her day-to-day). Something small and understated—perhaps something similar to what she had before—would likely be the best choice.

What would you suggest? I look forward to your recommendations—thanks in advance!

I’m planning on ordering the Citizen EO2028-06L this Tuesday, it’s gonna be my first watch so I’m super excited, I’ve been into watches for a few months now and this one seems pretty perfect for the budget I gave myself, the specs I’m interested in(for the price) and the size of my wrist. I’m also planning on picking up a jubilee style bracelet so I added a picture of the look I’m going for. If you have or have had this beauty and have some tips, tricks or wise words I’d absolutely love to hear them, thanks in advance!

Discussion Movado Watch Losing Time

• Upvotes

My wife bought me a nice Movado watch for my Birthday ( https://www.movado.com/us/en/shop-watches/bold-evolution-2.0-chronograph-3601265.html ). I love it but the first one would run perfectly and then somehow lose 3 or 4 minutes like 3 times over a week wearing it. So they sent a replacement right away. Then the second one does the same thing! They sent a third one. It ran in it's case for almost 2 days without a problem so I sized it and put it on this morning. I've been checking it many times when I think about it and it was still perfect until I checked it before going to bed and I can't believe it - it's 5 seconds slow. It's not a constant slowness it's like they jump backwards. Any ideas what is going on?

Review Windup Watch Fair: Experiencing Atelier Wen

Thumbnail

Today, I got to visit the Windup Watch Fair and experience Atelier Wen for the first time. I was genuinely shocked by their overall fit and finish and their incredible level of execution at a reasonable, affordable price point.

Their Inflextion series was by far their most interesting piece, with a gorgeous enamel dial and a case and bracelet made of Tantalum, an incredibly dense, gummy metal to work with. Most brands have only been able to produce the case from this material, yet Atelier Wen was able to produce a whole watch from it, which is shocking, considering they’re a young brand.

The Ancestra model was also incredibly impressive, with a beautifully hand-hammered grand feu enamel dial and a caseback displaying a movement with a Chinese poem engraved on the back. Honestly, this is the most unapologetic Chinese motif I’ve ever seen on a watch, and it really shows how confident the brand is and how they’ve decided to take a completely different approach to their designs.

The last model I got to experience was the Perception series, with a masterfully crafted dial by a master dial maker who uses a rose engine for 7 hours to create it. This is a technique I’ve only really seen on older low-production timepieces from Switzerland, but here it is on a watch that’s less than $5k, around the same as a Tudor diver. They’ve really opened my eyes to being more open to Chinese models and brands in the future, especially considering the value these watches deliver relative to how much manual labor goes into each model.

Discussion [Please help me pick a watch]

Post image

I’m pretty new to the world of watches and am just now starting to look into more “pricy” options. I’m not looking to break the bank and get into the $1,000+ range yet, but I was wanting recommendations for around the $500 range. I can’t really get too specific on what I’m looking for because I don’t really know enough yet, but I really like the look of GMT style watches. I want something that I can wear everyday and not have to worry about being TOO careful with. Obviously I’m not going to treat it badly but I don’t want to feel like I have to be overly cautious. Just something very solid that will last. I’d like it to be automatic as well, I like the idea of not needing a battery. I was looking at the Timex Waterbury Heritage Automatic GMT and really like the way it looks. If anyone has any positive or negative thoughts on that as well I’d appreciate it.
