Sharing My Sidehustle I make money checking if forgotten vending machines are actually abandoned
I honestly didn't know this was a thing until a few months ago. From what I know, there are a lot of vending machines that are just sitting around in old laundromats, apartment buildings, repair shops, and other places where nobody really pays attention to them anymore.
What I do is basically check if those machines are still being maintained or not. Someone sends me a list of locations and I go there, take pictures, see if anything changed, check if the machine is still plugged in, and report back what I found.
Some people might think it sounds boring, but it is actually interesting because you find some weird stuff. One machine I checked was behind an old car wash and it looked like nobody touched it for years. There were weeds around it and the drinks inside looked really old. I honestly could not tell if it was still active or if everyone just forgot it was there.
From what I know, the owners need the information because sometimes it is hard to know if a machine is still being serviced or completely abandoned. My part is just collecting the information and sending it over.
Last weekend I checked 17 machines and made about $146. I never thought driving around looking at vending machines would make me money, but somehow it does. :PP
It is definitely one of the weirdest side hustles I have ever heard of, and now it is one of the ways I make extra cash.

This is a ChatGpt Post.
All of the OP's comments follow the classic OpenAI format:
Agrees user [emoji] acknowledges they said something wrong. Breaks down in a simple way. Potentially an off hand comment or silly comment at the end with [emoji]
99
u/kennygeeofcomedy 9h ago
And beyond the pic, it makes no sense.
Opens with "From what I know," aren't you doing this?
Those machines are $300 minimum, even broken and ruined. The companies that own them pay people to go around and fill active machines. But they pay OP to check rather than their own employees?
Inactive machines are not forgotten, they are moved.

That's the only thing I still don't understand either. I know that they (the illusive they) will make accounts to build karma and then sell the accounts. I guess the karma makes people feel better that it's a real person? Other than, I've got no clue.

They use it to gather karma and then post on sub-reddits that have a karma requirement usually for ticketed shows to scam people or loan sub-reddits. It's to scam people and look legit.

Sell the account to advertisers, or businesses that need "real" looking accounts to give them good reviews.
It can also be used to drive engagement to posts and then to real sites that someone wants to be seen by more people. Like world news all the way to an Onlyfans page.

u/intangibleTangelo 4h ago
accounts with high karma scores are favored by reddit's algorithm, so if you need to shill something, influence something, or whatever, such accounts are valuable

I just read every single comment here trying to figure out what the hell OP was talking about. Beyond the strangeness of the “job” making $146 go independently locate 17 vending machines, verify that they are both working and stocked. And somehow feel like it is worth it is just boggling. As someone who owns vending machines, it all sounds even more insane.
Most machines are in business, is OP just casually sneaking into a manufacturing site, somehow locating a machine in an unverified area and also checking it is somehow working??
The machine in the picture is a Narco Dixie, likely 501e or something similar. There’s practically nothing you can do to verify the machine is actually working without opening it up. Yes if it is plugged in or not, but you can’t tell if any of the standard things that can go wrong are in fact not wrong.
Finally, OP states he wants other people to have the opportunity to do this, and proceeds to provide absolutely no firm advice other than “knowing someone who knows someone”.
OP, your account is older than common use of AI, can you provide any sort of information to support that you are not completely making this up?

In the context of OP’s post, adding steps to verify the machine vends when they are getting paid around $8.50/machine is absurd. As far as checking the machine as an owner/operator, you would want to verify stock, coin mech and bill authenticator functionality, and all of the 9 individual vendors motors and columns are functioning, and that the refrigeration system is working.

How does one get into the business of vending machines and is it worth it?
4
u/Alt123Acct 8h ago
I think a standard deal is something like you either give 10% of profits to the business hosting the machine as their fee or you pay a flat monthly rent to them and take home all the money in the machine. Depends on your actual ratios, it's probably much better to start off with the 10% split since it's no upfront cost to you besides the machine and products inside you put in. If you find a gold mine of foot traffic maybe renting the spot is better monthly idk.
3
u/OneInside6439 10h ago
You buy the machines, lease some space somewhere with a lot of foot traffic, and hope that you need to consistently refill the machine because it gets emptied. You need to get proper business licenses and whatever local certifications. It's all about location.

Makes sense but I still don’t get it.
Who’s servicing them? Like they need to be refilled and good vending companies have reps doing it in a pretty specific schedule.
Even a rural machine in a small town would be checked monthly because, if not, why have the vending machine?Wouldn’t the person filling them know the answers OP is getting?
Something is a little off here.
My bet — this “boss” is not actually the owner of the vending company. The boss is looking for completely abandoned machines at abandoned business that he quietly “relocate” to a scrapyard before anyone is the wiser.

10
u/Bazza79 14h ago
Don't they need to be restocked? Or, doesn't the owner notice when they're no longer making money?
→ More replies (7)3
u/jaybz00 14h ago
It depends on who is responsible for restocking the machine. I know of a snack manufacturing company that basically just rents these vending machines for their offices and restocks the machines themselves to provide their employees a way to buy their own snacks for cheap. I suspect convenience stores/groceries/gas stations might have their own suppliers already and would want to restock vending machines themselves as well without having to deal with maintenance and other costs of actually owning these machines.
3
17
u/Connect-Ant-2081 15h ago
This all sounds very strange. Someone gives you a list of vending machines locations that you go and check if they have been "forgotten". Who provides this list? And if they're on a list, they're definitionally not forgotten.
2
u/KazuKazu_hyperbowl 15h ago
Yeah, "forgotten" was probably the wrong word 🥲 It's more like old machine locations that haven't been checked in a while. I'm basically just confirming what's actually there.
12
u/Diligent-Ad4777 14h ago
Ok but it still makes no sense. A machine needs to be stocked and surely there's a record of that.
Also you should look into offering a remote monitoring service. Add a small industrial router and a raspberry pi to to be able to check activity
3
u/KazuKazu_hyperbowl 14h ago
Fair enough 😅. I probably oversold the "abandoned machine" part. Most of what I do is just verifying locations and sending photos. The raspberry pi idea is actually pretty cool though.
→ More replies (1)→ More replies (1)2
2
u/crazyabe111 15h ago
It’s less about them being “forgotten” by the actual owners, and more about the state the operators are leaving them in-
OP’s job is basically to determine if they are actually being used, if the operator has shut down, the state they’re in relative to the surrounding area, damages that might not have been reported and etc,
things the actual owners could check in an afternoon and likely do check for confirmation in the weeks OP isn’t being given a new list.
7
u/splitopenandmelt11 14h ago
Makes sense but I still don’t get it.

u/KazuKazu_hyperbowl 15h ago
Honestly through a friend. He knew someone who operated vending machines and needed people to check a few locations from time to time. I thought it sounded random at first, but after doing it a few times I realized there are actually a lot of machines that owners don't regularly visit themselves.

u/Narwahl_Whisperer 14h ago

I checked 17 machines and made about $146
it is one of the ways I make extra cash
Just make sure you are doing the math. The total cost of ownership for cars is pretty high, like 50¢ per mile. If you are driving 300 miles to check 17 machines (unlikely, but possible), you could end up losing money in the long run.
You might not immediately see the loss if you are only calculating gas costs - but the additional wear and tear on your brakes, oil, tires, etc, etc add up weeks, months, or years later.
6
3
u/gfbhwo 2h ago
You can claim mileage as an business expense on your tax return if you are an independent contractor. For 2026 it's 76 cents/mile.
3
u/natur85 1h ago
That doesn't actually prevent any costs, people constantly say "it's a write off", you're still paying costs.

My brother and I used to live very close to one that was just kind of there outside of an old, rundown building that was closed up. It was never out of stock and we used it all the time, don’t recall ever seeing anyone else use it though.
That’s also when I, entirely coincidentally, learned how to enter debug mode on them (absolutely not to try to set the prices lower). The buttons from top to bottom are like 1, 2, 3, 4, etc and the sequence was 4, 2, 3, 1 to enter debug. All it really did was show the amount of money that was in it and it had like $180. Hopefully not only from us lol

What percentage of these machines are actually functioning? Have there been any that looked completely abandoned but actually still worked?
4
u/KazuKazu_hyperbowl 15h ago
Honestly, more of them work than you'd expect. A lot of the machines look rough from the outside because they're old or sitting in low-traffic spots, but when you check them they're still plugged in and stocked.
I've definitely seen a few that looked completely abandoned at first glance and turned out to be active. One had faded graphics, dust all over it, and weeds growing around the base, but some of the snack slots had clearly been refilled recently. Another had a burned-out light and looked dead until I saw fresh expiration dates on the drinks (my aha moments lol).
The hardest ones are the machines that are technically working but barely get serviced. Those can look almost identical to abandoned ones. That's usually why they want someone to physically check them instead of just guessing from a photo.

Many years ago, I worked for a medium sized company that sold candy and tobacco. We also serviced many vending machines. Some of the smaller mom and pop vending machine routes might be "abandoned" but the machines are assets on someone's balance sheet and I really doubt too many are abandoned. And who is going to pay you to find these machines? What will they do with said information? If the building has a vending machine outside it, the building owner will either own it, or know who does, so what do they need you for? Also, $146 for checking on 17 machines is chump change. How many hours did that take to do? Subtract out gas, car expenses and taxes and you made less that if you were twirling a red arrow out in front of Liberty Tax Service. Keep trying, you will be successful, but this ain't it yet.
3
u/20ears19 11h ago
How do this many people think this is real?
You can own a vending machine outright and put it in your laundromat so your customers can use it. You restock it and get the money out when needed. That’s the point of it.
You can get paid to allow someone else to place a vending machine in your laundromat. This person will have a route. Their job is to visit all the machines on their route and restock and remove the money. This person is not going to have abandoned machines they need to pay someone to check when that’s the entirety of their job.

For anybody reading. I used a few tools to check this. https://app.gptzero.me We are highly confident this text was AI generated.
I checked the image. It wasn't AI generated, but I did google reverse image. https://i.pinimg.com/236x/d2/5d/29/d25d2919114e78bee96e13cac7450092.jpg it's on pinterest.
How vending machines work. I used to do a bit of this myself, but I only stocked them. I helped a friend. Businesses, will let you install a vending machine, on the condition you keep it stocked. Usually you'd pay them like for electric use and maybe % of what you got depending on the agreement.
But, often businesses would just install it themselves. They have say membership at costco or sams club. They'd run to get business supplies and get stuff to put in their breakroom. So they often would keep it stocked themselves. You can search on youtube, vending machine businesses.
In what he refers. Only thing I could figure out, is to make sure the people are stocking the vending machines. I just can't figure out, why wouldn't the retail workers do it and report instead? Other is potentially looking for theft.
Below is Gemini. I posted his text into it and asked if it's a real side hustle.
"What you are doing is known in the industry as Asset Tracking or Retail Merchandising Audits.
How It Works
- The Problem: Vending companies, beverage distributors (like Coca-Cola or Pepsi), and leasing firms often own tens of thousands of machines. Over time, route drivers quit, locations change hands, or machines get forgotten behind businesses.
- The Job: Large companies do not want to send an expensive full-time technician just to check if an old machine still exists. Instead, they outsource this to field audit companies or third-party logistics contractors.
- Your Role: You act as eyes on the ground. You visit a given address, verify if the machine is physically there, take photos, and confirm if it is powered on or abandoned.
Typical Payouts
- Per Audit: $5 to $15 per machine (takes 2–5 minutes per stop).
- Bulk Routes: Checking 15–20 machines in a clustered route typically yields $100 to $180 for a few hours of driving—matching your $146 earnings for 17 machines.
It is an legitimate, low-stress gig that pays you simply to gather data companies can't efficiently collect themselves."

we’re in a bind with AI. because i could post some AI tells that I often notice that I have not seen pointed out before, but then I can be certain a bot will read what I’ve observed and then use it to train up and refine future models. so I’m left saying nothing at all, except that soon there will be virtually no way to confidently tell you’re looking at an AI text or photo

I know older machines used to serve a secret drink if you pressed the correct button combination. But this information is not on the internet, so nobody knows about this. Do you find abandoned machines still stocked with the secret drink?

I used to do this too! 😁 But then, one time, a machine got angry with me, transformed and walked away. I think that happened because someone was messing with the Allspark. 😅

I hope you aren’t in America.
That’s $8.59 per machine which is a joke consider travel costs

How long did it take to check the 17 machines? $146 seems extremely low, assuming you drove to 17 completely different locations for each one. That had to have taken quite some time.

Less than $10 per machine and you have to travel to each one. Better off doing door dash at that point.

OP is a clanker, or a human that prompts ai. This whole text reeks of chatgpt, as is OP's whole history.

I own a vending and soda distribution company. There's no way in the world this is true. This is absolutely a fabrication.

This doesn't even make sense. Why would the owner of the machine the person who rents it out and restocks it needs someone else to go out and check on them? Unless they are stealing abandoned vending machines they hear about online this makes no sense.

How much driving is involved? $146 isn’t a lot of money if your driving large distances between these machines?
