Waiting in line for fuel while surrounded by toxic haze in Indonesia.

u/chickadee-stitchery 9h ago
What is the "toxic haze"??
130
u/Feisty_Record_6440 9h ago
Wildfires and farmers burning land. Shit happens every damn year and was annoying af when I lived in singapore
11
u/arequipapi 6h ago
Dude, up until 2010 farmers still did open burns in the Willamette Valley in Oregon. It was AWFUL. The practice was banned in 2010 thankfully

u/MeasureOnceCuttTwice 9h ago
Oh yeah. You enter the haze, think, "well this is disgusting," then every few kilometers just see local trash and tires being burned in big piles throwing off yellow or black smoke.
Several days later the chickens will be back to pick for scraps that didn't get burned all the way.
That was my experience in Indonesia. I will sacrifice more of my health to get back there still. Amazingly gorgeous country.

u/hardinho 9h ago
It's much worse now, they burned big parts of Sumatra for slash and burn and it's incredibly toxic and drifting to places like Singapore for weeks and months now.

u/LurkerOnTheInternet 8h ago
I assume it's not Singaporeans doing it, but Malaysians and the smog blows south? I'd be surprised if Singapore allowed it.
18
u/Chinpokomaster05 8h ago
No, it's in Indonesia and the smoke is blowing into Singpaore and Malaysia

u/Brittany5150 9h ago
Kinda like Chocolate Rain, but a lot less fun.
4
u/No-Travel9485 9h ago
The farmers do burn land to make way for palm oil plantations which is used for chocolate

u/DullEntertainment102 9h ago
I’m assuming from all the still uncontrolled wildfires, but I can be mistaken
16
u/islobojono 8h ago
Not uncontrolled, intentional fires.
-4
u/DullEntertainment102 8h ago
Intentional and controlled is fine but unfair intentional and uncontrolled aren’t mutually exclusive

u/HujanDTMalam 9h ago
nah, youre right. theres about 11-15 wildfires in indonesia and all of the smoke is causing the haze

u/nicolewatson- 9h ago
does anyone know if the haze is causing supply chain disruptions to all the nearby stations or is this just panic buying making the lines stack up?

Why do Indonesians allow their country to be so messed up? I've been told by Indonesians I know it's corruption which is understandable but hot damn!
19
u/yamanagashi 3h ago
You don’t know corruption until you’ve tried South East Asian corruption. Western movies and shows generalize third world corruption like how they see Mexican or Greek corruption - corrupt, payable cops, mafia-style “you talk you die” threats, scandal types. Now while you definitely do get those here, it’s much more systemic than that.
Every breathing part of the day for everyone is a practice in compromise. You compromise with your family and your neighbors. You get the Austronesian sense of filial piety, you need to socially-enforce saving face, you feel that greasing the wheel is what actually get things done. Kickbacks are written-in to the annual country budget, you just accept it as fact that anyone who runs office has already established themselves as having a finger in the pie of what’s taken as tax. And you just enjoy what little morsels are left to you. All the while you see your roads and hospitals and schools and welfare crumble around you. And what do you aspire? Not to make it better, no. You aspire to finally get to know someone that already has their finger in the pie so you can get a piece of it too.

Powerful. Sorry it's like that, sucks to hear. I've heard the best thing to do is leave the country and work somewhere else.

u/blissrunner 15m ago
Then there's the double edge sword again... Only middle-class/rich people or the kids of corrupt government officials can probably get out (immigrate to stabler/richer 3rd world or 1st world countries).
At no guarantee too... some countries just reject any PR, or would only accept you for cheap/menial labor (e.g. Japan)

it is their own fault for choosing yhe wrong leader, to be deceived by promises when they already know his trackrecord while he was in the gov backthen
-1
u/fhjjjjjkkkkkkkl 3h ago
The leader was an instigator in 1997 racial riots . Idiots chose him. Hopeless country and people. Undoing the good of the dutch
4
u/Successful_Stone 1h ago
The Indonesians are like this because of the Dutch. They learnt how to conduct corruption and atrocities from their colonial masters, then decided to work on perfecting it.

As a Singaporean with Indonesian descent, screw the Dutch. Screw all colonial imperialism. We Singaporeans got it lucky cos the Brits decided to build schools and improve the lives of the locals here.
But everywhere else? Nothing good comes out of colonialism. Indonesia could’ve been a better country if the resources were not exploited by the Dutch for 3 Centuries.
-1
u/fhjjjjjkkkkkkkl 1h ago
Come on. Indonesia is same like Australia Papua with mostly aboriginal population. In Central Kalimantan people were still head hunting and practising some form of cannibalism . Dutch unified and created the identity which is powering the Indonesian nationalism. Otherwise it’s just a bunch of island nations like in the Caribbean .
3
u/watchedngnl 2h ago
The good of the dutch? You mean ethnic cleansing, slavery, segregation and unsustainable exploitation with no attempts to build a nation? Imperialists are stupid but dutch imperialists are even worse.
3
u/FrogsMakePoorSoup 3h ago
It's been this way for so long now. There's a massive population spread over an enormous number of islands, historical problems, a fair bit of foreign interference, and just general acceptance of inequality. As an Australian we kinda watch on wondering if there'll ever get organised.

Was amazed at how respectful people were in navigating the chaotic driving in Bali. No one trying to jump in between with their ford raptors on a busy street. People were so patient with their driving

Fuel is not an option and never going to be in the future. The whole atmosphere smell really bad now a days. :(
3
5
u/Tjobbert 9h ago
When I see a line like that I'd give up. If it is that bad by the time I am there it's all out of fuel. Time to get the bycicle out!

4
u/Gooliez 8h ago
There isn't enough fuel in a tanker to fill all those cars and bikes, i feel sorry for the people at the end of the line
1
u/Civil_Deer7337 8h ago
Yeah. I've been in situations like this in my home country. The whole day gets shot.

u/Pigjedi 7h ago
Incompetent, stupid, uneducated, backwards, corrupted leaders of Indonesia ladies and gents, caused this. Allowing their citizens to burn down millions of acres of forest for palm oil plantation, not just polluting other countries, they wipe out animal habitats and ecosystems. And it's not even a natural disaster. They burn the forests willingly. They don't even care about the health of their own citizens. Now they run out of oil due to mis mgt of oil imports. Went to shit once a tanker met some troubles.
Imagine managing to pollute the entire singapore and Malaysia, who are located about a thousand kilometer away and another thousand km landmass north. How much forests have been burned down, and this is like the 6th/7th week into the haze.
Then u have braindead indonesian ministers that blame singapore and Malaysia companies, so when SG asked for the list of companies so they can hunt them down, Indonesia went "oh no no.. Not like that. Thank you and noted". *access blocked
2 Ministers have said singapore and Malaysia should thank Indonesia for oxygen when there's no haze. That's how stupid they are

u/RandomDustBunny 6h ago
Just point fingers at the government. Their common citizenry in kalimantan has it way worse than us.
0
u/Pigjedi 5h ago edited 2h ago
did u fail comprehension. Every sentence says Indonesian ministers
0
u/RandomDustBunny 2h ago edited 2h ago
Hey fucking Shakespeare, what do you think 'allowing citizens' mean eh? Are governments citizens? Are corporations citizens? They're all fucking citizens. But when we say citizens, the implication is often the common folk. So learn a fucking lesson you fucking idiot.
Who's directing the fucking burning? Do they include Singaporean and Malaysian companies?

Indonesia is too big and too unevenly distributed for a properly functioning government .
1
u/beef_horfun67 1h ago
They brought this into themselves. They allowed this to happen. I don’t feel sympathy for people who willingly hurt themselves.

Leave it to the Indonesians to destroy Indonesia

u/Drak_is_Right 7h ago
Palm oil and population growth are the two most destructive forces to Indonesia's rainforests.

Never a better time to transition to EV. And power by solar
2
u/toastiiii 7h ago
i wonder if the haze affects solar panels. I'd expect it to but idk much about that.
2
u/windowpuncher 7h ago
If the smoke blocks or dims light, then yes. So yes.
1
u/Electrical-Sale-8051 4h ago
You would be amazed how much solar our home system harvests on even a cloudy day, haze would be likely just a minor dent in production
1
u/Electrical-Sale-8051 4h ago
A bit but they’re amazingly efficient. It’s a cloudy overcast day here in Australia now and our house is still pulling 6kw right now.
Haze would dent production but it’s amazingly efficient

u/Fortestingporpoises 7h ago
Wouldn't it be funny if they got to the front of the line only to realize all the cars were in the motorcycle lane and all the motorcycles were in the car lane?
0
u/Affectionate-Chard36 3h ago
Why depends on the government when the people there have are occupying the land and resources
Start a revolt, overthrow them. Take back the land that belongs to you. The rich and government don’t own this, they belong to the people
2
u/4ssteroid 2h ago
This is so naive, or you've never been out of Finland or something. It's extremely hard because of the people themselves.
•
u/yosman88 54m ago
As an Indonesian its not as easy as you make it out to be. We can't just "overthrow" a government. Lots of people are still traumatized from Suharto, but know this we are upset and angry but violence will only hurt us further. When the elections come we hope to get someone better.

Panic buying. Everyone hears there is a problem with fuel supply, so they rush to fill up. All at the same time.
2
u/orangpelupa 5h ago
That's what's the govt propaganda currently touting.
Even in Java island, fuel has been spotty for months
-7
u/viperswhip 9h ago
Is this a small town? There are typically 3 gas stations close to each other nearly everywhere in Canada.
4
u/Kcufasu 9h ago
What is the relevance of Canada? This is Indonesia
But given you decided to yap on about your own country, I very much doubt there are "3 fuel (sorry can't bring myself to say gas for something that's a fucking liquid) stations" close together anywhere in the middle of the very deserted areas in the north of Canada anyway
-5
u/viperswhip 9h ago
I know, it was just a comparison. And ya, but in Canada, if this many people live somewhere, we have 3 gas stations.
