Highland midgets are generally friendly; simply offer them a wee dram if you meet any on the path.

I love the responses here 🤣🤣
I think you mean midge and they tend to be more active in the summer so you should be reasonably okay, the season is coming at an end for them as they aren’t active after September/October. Mind to look out for ticks too

I walked it in late Oct a few years ago and didn't see a single midget. Other times of year the midgets can be unbearable

The summer of '16 was particularly vicious, when they rented the Eigg Community Hall for their annual midget conference. Smidget and midget nets were useless and full-length trousers mandatory, as otherwise anyone within a 6' range of said community hall was at serious risk of getting their ankles nibbled on.

I saw one last week- bumped into the wee bugger, and he fell over. He said “I’m not happy”, so I said “which one are you then?”

They are mostly native to the lower altitudes, and many have adapted fully to living in the cities and towns, but in warmer weather and if it’s not too windy, you might see some on the higher paths. Bring some midget repellant just in case.

They just need to take more steps and the rest of us. Be kind.
Somehow, I hope that autocorrect got you and you were typing "midges", which my phone wants to make "nudges"

First of all, it's 2026, you can't call them that anymore. Secondly, if you meet them on a bridge, just pay the toll, it's not worth trying to solve their riddles. The house always wins.

La finisco domani e i midgets non ci sono più, per quanto riguarda dei nani di Biancaneve ho visto solo mammolo

Just watch out for the Redcaps, they're the mean buggers.
The rest you'll be able to hear them singing as they go along the trails "hi-ho"

The trick is to store any food within your campsite in a bag suspended at least 4 foot in the air.

Bring large sacks to throw over them, should keep them busy while you walk away.

Na I was there in mid September and we ran into like 10 of them on the whole way. By this time they should be all dead

Oh bless you.
Get some Smidge for those midges.
They don't like the cold so
Hopefully you'll be ok

Wonder how they made it over some of the boulders along Loch Lomond

u/cosimaneedsmypee 2d ago
the trick is to stack smaller rocks and build steps along the way. takes time though and people tend to knock them over.

Under the new ruling, all a student needs to qualify for an increased grant is a "nmkl pjkl ftmch," from the local authority.

I completed WHW in May. Saw no midgets, but I was ready for them. Hiking poles were hidden spears.
I think there was a dwarf shortage that month.

Yes, the supply of mithril baselayers is currently at an alarming low. Best not call them midgets though. Last guy that did this got his leg chopped off with a battleaxe.

Finished the WHW last Tuesday (great experience!)
No midges, but bring waterproof (!) clothes and enjoy

You should be more worried about the long nights and how cold they can get. Won't be too bad on the West coast - nothing like it gets in the Cairngorms - but you should plan layers to be toasty warm at night.

All joking aside, weve just finished the 2nd last stage today and we have barely seen any midges for 9 days. Youll be fine.

Not sure about the midgets but a Scottish Autumn is usually dark, cold and wet. I hope you’ve got somewhere warm to sleep at night.

u/meatflaps-69 2d ago
Its frowned upon to step on them but they do kinda get in the way, just try walk round as best you can, if you do trod on one they can be very vocal but are fairly harmless.

I did not see a midget but I did see an ewok coming out of the woods by Loch Lomond though

u/sylvestris1 1d ago
I would normally say you shouldn’t see any at this time of year. However I was walking the dogs in the woods behind my house tonight (central, west coast) and was astonished to find myself being bitten.
So who knows. There may be some. There probably won’t be the swarms that make you want to run shrieking into a loch.

Lol. Imagine you were actually talking about midgets.

u/sylvestris1 1d ago
There’s no midgets in the woods, as far as I know. There are some elves though and they’re vicious wee bastards.

I completed the route last week and there were no midges from what I saw.

Gets way better around Christmas when they all head to city theatres for seasonal work.
Just stay off yellow brick roads.

Don’t think you should call them that anymore
