Windows 7 I have a failing hard drive with my HP compact pro 6300

OK, so this is one of my refurbished computers that I got off of Amazon it’s been working really good for years but then all of a sudden start saying “ drive hard detects imminent danger” and I reseated it. Now today, after powering it on it decides to do it again.

Hi u/leo37415, thanks for posting to r/WindowsHelp! Your post has been flagged for manual review by a human moderator, please include as much of the following information as possible (in text or in a screenshot) to get your post approved:

  • Your Windows and device specifications — You can find them by pressing Win + X then clicking on “System”, we need more than just your OS version! Your hardware details are often critical for resolving issues.
  • Any messages and error codes encountered — They're actually not gibberish or anything catastrophic. It may even hint the solution!
  • Previous troubleshooting steps — It might prevent you headaches from getting the same solution that didn't work

Posts must be tech support in nature (such as something is broken and you need help fixing), so general inquiries, software suggestions, and purchasing advice will be removed. As a reminder, we would also like to say that if someone manages to solve your issue, DON'T DELETE YOUR POST! Someone else (in the future) might have the same issue as you, and the received support may also help their case. Good luck, and I hope you have a nice day!

Use a program like CrystalDiskInfo to get more information, but it most likely is your drive is failing and needs to be replaced.

Unplug the drive, install Windows on the new one. You should not be running windows on a hard drive to begin with.

Attribute 7 is the drive head reporting an error (SEEK_ERROR_RATE). Drive is on it's way out. Backup any information you still can and replace the drive, it cannot be trusted. As it's a refurbished machine I'd imagine it's out of warranty, but you can check the serial number on the manufacturer's website.

The manufacturers website is defunct for some reason. I checked it the first time it happened. But thank you for the help

https://support-en.wd.com/app/warrantystatusweb and plunk in your region and serial number of the drive. WD bought HGST back in 2012.

Will this still work with a drive over 16 years old?
