We’re still a small group and would love to welcome a few more creative people, whether you're interested in writing, directing, acting, cinematography, editing, or any other aspect of filmmaking.

If you're interested in joining us, you can fill out a form here! https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScIF-Q27cgbGldytClJj0G6wys5m7Rso427_M03p9EP1UjgfQ/viewform

Industry-Lingo dictionary

I think, no matter how many years you’ve been in the biz, the industry always has new jargon you have to nod your head along to and pretend to understand.

Someone used the term ā€œFAST channelsā€ in a conversation recently and admittedly I had nooo clue what they meant.

Like, total crickets!

Anyway, we got to thinking it would be very handy to have a dictionary with all the ā€œindustry lingoā€ in one place.

And so, after a lot of trial and error, we made it.

It’s still evolving but this is a searchable constellation with film and tv terms related to pitching, story development, sales, grants and much much more.

Very useful to have in your virtual-back-pocket if you ever need to look something up.

I’m so glad this sub exists! This music video was my directorial debut last year. We made it with an extremely low budget, but it was a fun challenge considering! I wanted to do a tribute to some of my favorites (Blue Velvet, Twin Peaks & Heathers), so I hope you all will enjoy those references if you’re also a fan ā¤ļø

We made a free pitch deck compressor for film pitch decks!

Hi everyone!

Have you ever tried to send out your pitch deck, only for Google to tell you the PDF is too big to attach in an email?

What now?

You have to upload it as a Google Drive / Dropbox / WeTransfer link which adds unnecessary friction to the process of opening your deck.

Well, we were tired of this and made a tool for ourselves to solve the problem.

Email my deck is a PDF Compressor designed specifically for pitch decks.

It compresses your deck to the smallest possible email-friendly size without affecting image quality or text legibility.

It’s easy to use and completely free! Just drag and drop your deck, wait a bit and download the new email-friendly version.

Unlike other online PDF compressors, the compression takes place locally on your device itself, so there is no risk of your data being sold to evil corporations.

We use this all the time before sending out film/TV decks and commercial treatments and today is the first day since we’ve made it public.

Save the link for the next time you have to send out a pitch deck! And do let me know in the comments if you think this is helpful!

Helping my aunt get her murder mystery book out there! Looking for podcast recommendations

Hi everyone!

My aunt has written such a great mystery novel, and it's been really exciting to see her start getting some recognition and featured in media outlets!

I'm so proud of what she's accomplished, and I wanted to find a way to help support her and get her story out there a little more.

I was wondering if anyone knows of any smaller podcasts or communities that feature authors, especially those focused on mystery novels, storytelling, or the writing journey?

And if anyone here happens to host a podcast, I'd love to connect! I'm happy to share more about her and her book to see if she'd be a good fit.

She's worked so hard on this, and this is just my little way of giving back and cheering her on.

I'd really appreciate any recommendations! 😊

Hey. Future auteur here and I'm editing a YouTube video that I'm losing motivation to edit and decided it would be a good idea to post the trailer for it here to see if it's worth continuing. The goal was to edit it like a movie so it made since to make a trailer for it but its not getting much traction so trying to see what's wrong with it. Any tips are helpful.

What would make creating pitch decks less painful?

Hi everyone! I run a film/TV pitch deck design studio (https://pitch.dog) and we are working on some free tools to help make the painful process of designing your own pitch deck slightly easier.

The tools include templates, color palette generators, font selectors and a lot more.

I would love to know how many people would be interested in something like this. The tools would be totally free to use. No strings attached. Please let me know if this seems like it would be helpful to you.

And secondly, if you have any suggestions on what tools you wish you had at your disposal while making pitch decks, please share them.

Don’t hold back! Think of it like you’re talking to a genie, and share your most unrealistic ideas!

We will try our best to make them happen!

Other Got invited to a wrap party by someone who makes me uncomfortable- do I go?

I met a producer/casting director (worked on some big things) at an event, and we met for coffee and it was very clear that he wanted my body.

I don’t want anything other than a professional relationship (he’s also twice my age) but I was so terrified I didn’t know what to say other than moving away when he pulled me in and saying I needed to go home after about an hour.

He invited me to a wrap party today. I asked for more details- but I’m not sure what to do. I want to network but I do not want to give up my body to climb. I haven’t had a lot of luck in NY so far, but I also don’t want my desperation to get the best of me. I know wrap parties are good for networking, and it might be for a big project, but I don’t feel safe with him. Am I allowed to bring another person to these things? Do you think it’s worth going to? I’m still waiting for him to share details.

EDIT: I have posted about this guy before, I wanted to know if it’d be different bc it’s a different event, and with more people. From the comments it’s sounding like I shouldn’t go, so I will cut him off, thank you. I would appreciate any networking tips and creep detecting tips.

UPDATE: I did not go

Hello! I’m a Producer’s Assistant for the award-winning indie film, Honeyjoon. We are currently looking for volunteer ambassadors to help spread the word about the theatrical release of Honeyjoon, now in select theaters! This is an opportunity for anyone interested in film, marketing, original storytelling, and shining a light on indie films.

Can get started ASAP: Honeyjoon is playing in LA September 6 & 10 at LOOK Cinemas Glendale! (And Sep 25 at The Eastwood PAC). We hope to use your help to pack these theaters!

If interested, please apply here.

Video Read Receipts-a short documentary film on dating apps

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

This is a trailer i made for READ RECEIPTS, a film i have been working on this summer and just submitted to festivals. Ty

Read Receipts

Documentary Short, 16:42, Dir. Tenley E. Raj

A woman prepares for a date, goes, and returns to an empty room and a phone.

Speaking directly to camera, she recounts the evening-the getting ready, the restaurant, the thing she said over dinner that she can't take back-and then circles what sits underneath it: whether he'll write and what any of it is supposed to prove.

Read Receipts is a portrait of contemporary loneliness- the particular isolation of being endlessly reachable and still unsure you've been reached-and of a mind that fills every gap with its own verdicts. Shot, directed, and edited alone by Tenley E. Raj, the film stays with a single face past the point of composure, until the account she gives becomes an act of exposure in itself.

Movie / Show Discussion A question for female filmmakers: can the same monologue become a different story when a woman performs it?

A female director and I recently made a film experiment that started with a simple question: what happens when the opening monologue ofĀ Baby ReindeerĀ is performed by a woman instead of a man?

We weren’t trying to remake the series; we were interested in whether the emotional meaning changes simply because the audience reads the character differently.

What surprised us was how much the subtext seemed to shift, even though almost none of the words changed.

I’d love to hear from directors, actors, and writers here: have you ever reinterpreted existing material from a different gender perspective, and did it fundamentally change the story for you?

I’m especially curious whether you think the audience changes the meaning of a performance as much as the performer does.

Review my film so Sofia Coppola can see it! 🩷

Hi everybody! My name is Alisanna and I'm a female filmmaker. I'm currently in the running for the Sofia Coppola Short Film Award! I've submitted the concept for my next short film "Our Lady Lucy". It follows a sheltered thirteen-year-old girl who's late on her period for the first time, causing her to believe she's pregnant with the second coming. It's a dramedy that comments on reproductive rights and bodily autonomy. You can read more about the film and support with a review at the link below!

Sofia only picks from the top 25 films and in order to get that chance we need reviews from fellow filmmakers! If any of you want to support an up and coming filmmaker & a female focused story, it would mean so much to get a review! šŸ’–

Upcoming Projects Fundraising Post-Production for Short Horror Film TWYLA [Teaser Trailer]

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

In 'Twyla,' a young woman becomes obsessed with saving a caged dog she believes is being mistreated by her neighbor.

Set during a hostile summer in the rural midwest, this film explores what it's like to enter young adulthood after surviving CSA.

This past spring, we were only able to film because we raised the minimum costs of production - around $12000!

Our Kickstarter is still open and we are now crowdfunding for our stretch goals to be able to fund post-production. You can still opt in for rewards if you would like to help us complete the film.

Kickstarter:Ā https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/vanesastoynova/twyla-short-horror-film

Or get in touch if you're interested in making a fully tax deductible donation through our fiscal sponsor! Generous donors have the opportunity to be credited as executive producers in the film and on IMDb.

A simple way to ā€˜visually test’ your film pitch deck.

Post image
15 Upvotes

Hello everyone!

I run a pitch deck design studio that specializes in film and tv pitch decks.

Today I’m sharing a random slide from a pitch deck we designed for a women-led action comedy.

Notice how even an ā€œinsignificantā€ slide, with nothing but the word ā€œCharactersā€ on it fits the vibe and genre of the series.

Even a slide this simple reinforces the tone of the series. It echoes the world of the film. It feels chaotic, confident, stylish, and full of personality before you’ve met a single character.

At our pitch deck design studio, we ā€œtestā€ slides by covering up the text and checking if it still feels like the film.

If a person reads just the logline and nothing else, the deck should still ā€œlook the partā€

This is a great way to check if your deck is doing justice to the visual world of your story.

THE KNOCK | Horror Short Film

Thumbnail youtu.be
8 Upvotes

I am new to filmmaking, and this is my first short. I would love to know what you all think.

I am a commercial photographer by trade, I am used to working with mostly women on set, women dominate marketing, Art department, HMU and styling roles on a still photography set. I tried my best to bring that same energy to this film, and it was an absolute blast. I can't wait to continue to do this as I move through making self funded shorts.

Other self funding for films, budgeting, other advice - looking for help!

hope i’m in the right place to ask about this. i find other subs that have a largely male audience give very oversimplified responses to these types of questions, and i’m hoping the nuance of my situation will resonate more with other women.

i’m an aspiring scriptwriter, looking to do a course with good industry links on it next year. i have two solid short film scripts i want to produce to have something to ā€˜show’ for my efforts. i know enough actors to fill the roles, and have a few locations i could use for some (but not all) scenes. i could edit it myself and even have just enough cosplay experience to do the makeup and costuming myself without it looking too amateur. my friend is a designer who would help with promo materials and i have another friend i trust who gives me script feedback. i have a few things really holding me back:

- i’m a solo parent. a lot of my time is taken up parenting despite getting lots of support from family, and it makes finding the time and energy to try and make this stuff happen feel like a borderline insurmountable task. also, i’m fairly broke on account of how expensive kids are.

- i’m chronically ill. some days i’m housebound, and apart from *knowing* my period week will be hell i cant predict when i’ll be struck down. severe endo, we think its spread, cysts, lots of nice painful yucky stuff like that. iykyk.

- crew. a lot of my friends are ill or carers themselves, can be a bit flaky despite how much they love me and would do anything to help **in theory**

- location. the actors i know would totally travel to help me out if paid, but they would need accommodation. if i want to meet crew and directors at events, they’re all over an hour away from me, and travelling that far with my health as it is throws up too many challenges, especially when i have to plan childcare in advance. there are basically no resources for connecting with people in my town who might have the skills to help, and i am too fatigued to be the one to spearhead that almost-certainly-futile project myself. if i was in a better state i totally would, but its mot realistic rn.

- money! as i said, i’m skint, and currently looking for remote work that hasn’t been overtaken by AI. iā€˜m not young enough to qualify for any of the ā€˜young filmmaker’ grants, i try to apply to stuff but its so competitive. i want to pay actors and crew an actual wage, and accommodate them, and be able to afford gear rental and tracks and hiring a location as needed. both of my completed scripts could be done for 5k or less. trying to think up other ideas that could be made for under 1k but, realistically given my current situation, even that would be a stretch.

i feel so out of control and disconnected from achieving my goals because of things like money, and where i am cutting me off from a lot of opportunities (especially to meet crew!) and my health. i refuse to give up but i just need a realistic starting point or something. i’ve gotten really detailed and helpful advice previously like ā€˜you’ll find a way’ or ā€˜just keep applying for grants’ but thats not actually telling me anything useful, or sharing different approaches. hoping other parents/chronically ill filmmakers here have realistic advice, especially on managing goals with fatigue and daily life responsibilities (and if any of you have found a money tree for project funding, let me know about that, too).

Upcoming Projects Help bring my short "Teenage Daydream" to life.

Hi! My name is Sophia Alexandra Martinez, I wrote and directed a proof of concept for my short "Teenage Daydream" I have submitted this to the Decentralized Pictures short film grant with Sofia Coppola. It would mean a lot if you can review and provide feedback. Here is a link where you can watch the scene: https://app.decentralized.pictures/project/6a444c9a443efd02620e8213.

I have attached some BTS photos from the shoot! If you need instructions on how to leave feedback, I have attached a poster with a QR code that can guide you through the process.

Project Description:

Sixteen, clumsy, and shy.

Set over the course of one night in Downtown Los Angeles, Teenage Daydream follows JULIA GOMEZ, a shy 16-year-old from East L.A. navigating her first heartbreak after her boyfriend abruptly ends their relationship.

After school, Julia’s friends pull her into a spontaneous night across the city starting with a makeover and ending at a punk show at a DIY music venue called The Smell.

Through music, friendship, and the unpredictability of the night, Julia begins to step outside the version of herself she thought she had to be. What begins as heartbreak quietly transforms into a coming-of-age story about identity, girlhood, and building self-confidence.

How do you learn to trust your own judgment as a filmmaker?

I've been thinking a lot about this lately, and I'm curious how other filmmakers handle it.

How do you know when a film is actually done? At what point do you stop tweaking and decide it's ready to share?

Do you still worry about whether it's good, or have you found a way to trust your instincts? How do you know if something is working versus just doubting yourself?

I guess what I'm really asking is: how do you learn to rely on your own judgment instead of constantly needing outside validation?

I'd love to hear how filmmakers think about this, especially if your relationship with self-doubt has changed over time.
