I got in trouble for paying my coworker to close for me.

I work in a small/medium sized restaurant. Usually on Friday nights we have three cooks. This Friday night we only had two. I suspect it was due to owner being cheep based on past behaviors, but that’s beside the point. It was extremely busy and by the end of the night I was exhausted. At my job the cooks have to do the vast majority of the work. Dish, trash, setup, etc. usually during closing shift the people on shift stay up with dish throughout the day, but due to the busyness of that evening that was impossible. After being closed for forty-five minutes I decided i couldn’t do this for another hour. I payed my coworker $30 to finish up the dishes so I could leave. Pretty much all of my coworkers have engaged in this and when my manager finds out it happened the night before he never seems to care. This is my first job working in a restaurant so I’m not sure if this is acceptable/normal. This morning I woke up to multiple messages about it. My manager left a snarky response about finding another job if we don’t like working. Which pissed me off becauseb he encouraged this behavior and never said shit until now. He said “Do not pay your coworkers to do your job at the end of the night… they can barley do there own job let alone both closing duties if you don’t want to work I can get you off the schedule or you can find a new job just let me know.” Then the owner messaged me “OP you do not pay someone to close for you. The kitchen is a mess and I’m on my last straw with you.” I’ve only had micro interactions with her and in all of them she has insulted me and cursed at me. I think someone I’m working with is talking shit to her behind my back. I have to go into work soon and I just so pissed.

Has anyone utilized their company’s FMLA to find a new job while they are out?

My boss keeps dumping other people’s unfinished work on me and says “it’s team spirit”

I’m so tired of this. I was hired for one clear role, but for the past two months my boss keeps passing over failed tasks from a coworker who never gets held accountable.

Last week my coworker missed his deadline on a client report. Instead of making him fix it, my boss sent it straight to my inbox and told me to finish it by end of day. No extra pay, no overtime, just “team players help each other out.”

I already hit my own deadlines every week. I told my boss I can’t keep absorbing extra work without compensation or adjusted priorities. His response was basically “don’t be negative, this is good experience for you.”

What kills me is that the coworker still leaves on time every single day, while I stay late to clean up his messes. My workload is piling up and I’m slowly burning out.

I don’t even want to quit right now because the job market is rough. But I feel like my boundaries are just being ignored. Has anyone here dealt with this kind of one-sided “team spirit”? How did you handle it?

how can customers be so stupid

I work in private healthcare (optics) so I do both medical stuff and also retail of certain products for treatment and whatnot.

Today actually has made me concerned for the IQ of the general population.

all in ONE day mind you:

“how do i go downstairs?” a customer stood immediately next to the descending flight of stairs with a big fat sign that says “way out”

at least 15 people attempting to figure out why the escalator they just came up, won’t take them downstairs

patients who book appointments earlier in the day in order to return at the appointment time and then don’t let front desk know they’ve arrived. and then proceed to come and shout at me for how long they’ve been waiting. do you seriously think i sit there with my eyes peeled waiting for you to turn up????

when i say “take a seat in the waiting area and they’ll call you shortly” and point, and they immediately walk in the opposite direction and look at the glasses frames, and then proceed to approach the desk angry they haven’t been called for their appointment. they did! you just weren’t there !!!!

customers walking to the reception desk and just say their name and nothing else. and then seem annoyed when i surprisingly have more questions.

contact lens patients who lose/run out of lenses and then are absolutely baffled when i tell them we do not keep complex toric lenses behind the desk and i would have to order it for delivery. “but i need them for today?” oh yes, let me magically whip it out of thin air for you!!

on the same subject, complex contact lens wearers who say “can’t you just give me a pack of the stock lenses?” your prescription is your prescription. if i gave you ANY OTHER TYPE OF LENS YOU WOULDN’T BE ABLE TO SEE !!!!! that and the fact i cannot dispense outside of prescription.

don’t even get me started on contact lens patients in their appointments where they have to put the lenses in so i can sign off that it’s safe for them to be released to them. no darling, the lenses are not in your eyes they are on your cheeks because for some reason that is where you put them !!!!!!!

nobody i spoke to today was a real human being i refuse to believe it.
