Something from the mods On bullying and prejudice in r/writinghelp.

Hello, friends. I'm not the head mod and I'm often pretty invisible in here but I do most of the moderating day-to-day. I wanted to say a few things for the sake of the community here.

Recently a user posted some problematic writing in here which was followed by several other users creating posts in other subreddits that encouraged bullying of this individual. Bans have been issued on both sides of this interaction. Any attempts to out who any of these users are in this space will also be met with bans because we're done and moving on. But part of moving on is talking about the issues and so that is what this post aims to do for those interested.

1. Sometimes users will have problematic elements in their writing. We need to have certain understandings about how this is dealt with.

If you're a seasoned writer, you will probably note that most things posted here are not particularly refined. That's not a bug but a feature! We're here to help with writing and not show it off. Based purely on my anecdotal modding experience, I believe most posters here are also fairly young and tend to be beginners. Posting writing for public critique is actually a rather impressive act of vulnerability and demonstrates a starting point of humility in most cases. That is something to be celebrated.

A lot of people end up expressing concerning views or sentiments through their writing, as well as ignorance. We often have users critiqued on grounds of portrayal of racial and ethnic groups, of sex and gender, of mental states and conditions, and more. Sometimes users even come and ask about how to improve their representation of these things. Respectful representation is a writing skill and it is on-topic here. You can ask about it and you can also critique people on it, even if they did not ask for it. This should continue.

Most users, in my once-again anecdotal modding experience, actually respond fairly graciously to critiques of this kind. People are more often ignorant than malicious. If someone genuinely responds well to that sort of thing, great! Treat them as someone that you are helping to grow, not as an enemy. We've all been more ignorant and less articulate in the past. If someone responds with a prejudicial tirade, report the situation because they are in violation of the standards we set for this community. Remember also that sometimes "you should not portray this if you don't understand it" can be good writing advice.

If you are called out on poor representation, respond gracefully! Assume good intentions unless you have a reason not to. Writing is a skill that involves connecting with an audience and if someone is reading prejudice in your writing even if it was not the intent, that is most likely an indicator of an area of improvement.

The short conclusion is to say that you should expect some problematic aspects to exist in writing in this space sometimes but assume people are here to improve and that this is one area to do it in. We're not going to moderate away every bad example of men writing women or whatever because that would be antithetical to helping people learn where the issues lie. We will, however, absolutely moderate against people who show an active intention to further their prejudice or whose goals in writing are openly and intentionally harmful.

2. Bullying users is not to be tolerated, especially when it involves brigading.

As I mentioned, posting writing online is a vulnerable act. It is made all the more so by the modern internet being a frankly pretty hostile space. Sometimes people come looking to pick on people for entertainment and unfortunately in the past some people have brought that energy here. If you are looking to be mean, to tear users down with no meaningful helpful feedback, or to make a "lolcow" of someone, you are decidedly unwelcome here.

This extends especially strongly to linking posts here to external communities, which frequently drives crowds here with intentions other than helping people with writing. We have banned users over doing this with malintent and we've reached out to moderators of other communities to get users banned for doing it in those spaces too. We'll continue to do this if necessary because this sort of behavior does not actually solve writing issues but simply inflames issues.

It's also just mean. Good people decide not to do these sorts of things. Ragebaiting is not a healthy aspect of discourse and solves no social issues. If someone is being problematic, they are less likely to improve that if you make it a public show. In fact, they are likely to take the defensive position and make negative progress instead.

The short conclusion is that external bullying and links inviting raids or voyeurism towards users here will be met with permanent bans as well as reports to the moderators of communities being used to launch the raids.

Alrighty, guys. Have a lovely week.

Story Plot Help How much damage could a sentient raven do to a human if it were very angry?

Basically in my story a raven attacks a human. How well could a human defend themself against it, and how injured could both of them be?

Edit: I do know that ravens are sentient. I probably meant sapient instead of sentient, but feel free to correct me if you don’t think that’s the proper word choice either

Story Plot Help What would be a reasonable occupation for a lower-class person where they would be able to regularly interact with a billionaire? (daily/weekly basis)

• Upvotes

I'm writing a romance story and I wanted both of the main characters to have drastically opposite social standings, one being a billionaire and the other being an average lower-class person. I initially considered giving them a position in the police force because it would suit the setting but, ultimately, I would prefer to give them a more common occupation so they feel more relatable.

However, what was important was that both the billionaire and the lower-class were able to interact in the story without it having to be a one-time event, one where their paths would be able to reasonably intersect on a daily or weekly basis, while giving them the chance to have personal interactions that weren't strictly professional.

Within the story, they're meant to be at odds with each other, with each of them having important roles in the story later on that are initially unbeknownst to the other. The billionaire's rude to them, in stark opposition to his public-facing persona, while the lower-class reluctantly puts up with their behaviour.

I was thinking something banal like a convenience store might have worked but I don't think it's realistic for a rich dude to rock up to a place like that. It's the kind of occupation I'd ideally prefer to have, but I have no idea how I could put the billionaire in a position where he would visit them out of choice when they're not really fond of each other to begin with.

Also, for the record, it takes place in the current day, so I'd imagine my options are very limited.

To do:
Get up, wake up
You’re late, awake… I’m always late
Awake. The universe wants you awake.
Get up… Get. Up… GET UP

5:00am:
Heal. It happened. It happened all at once. Why?
No matter, I prefer that, I prefer harder.
Get up, get up, get up
wake up. Learn. Relearn.

Be nice be kind, but don’t be too nice don’t be too kind. But, be nice to me too?
Be real, but don’t be too much.
Look nice but not too nice.
Be honest but not too honest.
You’re not a victim. It was your fault. Heal. Heal it all. Heal then heal them.
Work. You need to work. Money survives you.
Heal… think… where the fuck am I?
I’m late, I’m always late.
Heal.
Heal the father wound because he wasn’t there. It’s good he wasn’t.
Heal the mother wounds because you were there and he wasn’t.
Heal don’t act like your father’s daughter. Inherit. Why. Know thy self. His wounds.
Heal. Get over it, ok, but please stop doing it. No. Heal. Sit. Good girl.

5:30 am:
Burn the boats, burn all the boats, do it or else you’ll go back.
Heal
The dream was a memory a kiss good luck a kiss goodbye, with the souls in a puddle at our feet, goodbye.
For him. Do it for him… be a good girl, do it for her be a good girl… do it for you?

5:31 am:
Regret burning all the boats. This is fucking ridiculous.

Matters not, you’re you. Take the hit. Then, take a harder one. Three for good measure, now… Get up, get up, Get. Up.
Be a good girl… but you’re a bad one.

The little girl
You? Me? No not me don’t be selfish.
Her.
The little girl
Your little girl. GET UP!
Teach
She needs to listen. She needs to be quiet, she needs to be hidden. Protected. Fiercely, you’re suffocating, she can’t feel this pain… if she doesn’t know pain how will she survive. Knock it off. You have it better than most
heal.
She needs to listen, But, not in a way where she drowns herself out. She needs to learn.
But, not to well so she has room to really know the truth… what’s the truth? Find out. . . You need the truth. Transfer your heart it’s shattered get a new one. Heal.

Question Diary entry style advice

Hi all. I have never written before but have this niggling urge to write this idea i have been sitting on for a while.

I also don't read very much and don't really enjoy it so I realise im at a huge disadvantage.

My whole concept is basically a diary of someone with an interesting job. So the whole thing is written as diary entries.

Will this work? Or does that concept feel too broken or difficult to read or enjoy?

Also, do anyone have any tips for beginners, I remember from my school days about going deep into 'painting the picture' and really being descriptive. But apart from that im literally just writing it as it comes out.

I'm happy with the whole character arc, plot points etc, its more the actually writing diary entries to stay engaging.

Also while I'm here. What will people do when they've written something? Just post here? Post online anywhere else? Im obviously aware that its going to need alot of work once the whole thing is 'on paper' but i dont have anyone in my life who can proof read or suggest advice once I have it and I dont want to just open myself up to abuse for it being bad.

Thanks in advance

Question Worried about the ethics continuing the book I'm writing

I've been writing a novel. A few months ago I started putting section of it into AI for feedback. I would ask it to find problems in the writing, but I wouldn't use its answers. As I've looked more into AI, I've learned about the ethical problems of using it at all. I've stopped. But now I wonder if all the work I've done is ruined because I used AI. I love this story and I'm worried I've ruined it by ever using AI. Is there any way to salvage it? Do I need to write something entirely new?

Question What are some tips to come up with good character names

Hello guys,
I’m writing a script for a game I’m working on, and I left the character’s names until I had a good chunk of the story.
But
now that i’m tryna come up with names they all sound cheesy to me lol.
I also don’t want to come up with names that don’t fit the 80’s to 2000’s era.
Thanks in advance

Other For the love of words [RESOURCE]

I created this vocabulary resource for my daughter, Poème, as a college gift. It's a lovingly curated collection of a thousand beautiful words arranged intuitively by feel (just how a writer reaches for them).  It took years to collect and categorize these words - but it has been, and continues to be, a labor of love.  Now we are hoping it can serve as many developing writers as we can reach. This goodwill offering is the kind of resource I would have loved, as a young poet.  Please feel free to share - https://athousandbeautifulwords.org/

Best wishes in your craft!

Advice writing guidance !

I am a beginning writer, and I'm pretty young. I really enjoy romance, but also mystery, fantasy and dystopian literature and I am trying to write a story, I don't expect it to be perfect or well-liked, but I do want to look back on it and be like "wow, this was good/alright/bad, how can I improve on this?" and my biggest questions are:

How do I write a story best? How do I build it? How do I build the characters? What are the essential questions I need to ask myself when I am making the characters, plot, etc? Do I tell it from their perspective or the authors, or some narrator?
I really want to understand it better and the making of it. Any tips or useful guidance would be amazing!

Does this make sense? First time writer, am I on the right track?

Hey yall! So basically what the title said. I’m a first time writer and I can’t tell if I’m on the right track to write and interesting story or not. Additionally I’m not sure if my writing is clear or just a bunch of jumble. I’ve attached the first 20ish pages of the prologue. If anyone would be willing to give it a quick overview and offer some feedback that would be greatly appreciated!!

EDIT:
I promise they’re is context to the letter, I def should have added it into the original post and that’s totally my fault. I’m so sorry guys😭💀 In chapter one Daisy ends up boarding the wrong train. She gets picked up by a separate gang of outlaws who have no idea who she is. After she passes out from seeing blood on one of their chins, they go through her belongings and a neatly kept diary of all the letters and telegrams daisy sent and received from banks. The reader later learns all of the T&C were daisy and banks speaking in code over what her life would soon look like. This gives the mistaken gang a chance to build a basis on who they need to pretend to be.

Question Kinda wrote myself into a corner with a scene change, need help

So I'm writing a fanfic and I've written some pretty decent banter between friends during a school break ending with some slight trolling regarding homework. I'm really ptoud of it since it's like my best dialogue ever and I suck at dialogue, but now I need to fast forward to Ryu leaving the school alone and I have no idea how to start the scene (since I don't have the balls to rewrite the thing I already have done). Could I get sny ideas/recommendations/pointers of how to start the new scene?

Old scene ending for reference:

“Don’t worry, I’ll be free to play tomorrow and besides, even if you’ll lose, there’s always another Clash next week! Now let’s get going, the lunch break will be over soon. What’s the next class anyways?”

“Next is math,” Fumi smiled diabolically, “I hope you’ve done the proofs we’ve had due today…”

“Oh shit. Shit, shit, shit, shit, shiiiiit…” Ryu had to use all the strength he had to stop himself from jumping from the nearest window, “Heeeyyyyyy Fumiii…”

“Yeaaah?”

“Could you per chance mayhaps let me copy your proofs for math…?”

“I dunno,” Fumi asked innocently, “what’s in it for me if I do?”

“Literally anything, please, I beg of you Fumi, you’re like my only hope right now, I don’t wanna get kicked out of here like this…”

“I’m not really sure to be honest,” Fumi cut a little deeper knowing full well they didn’t have a single assignment due today, “you ok if I’ll just think about it for a few minutes or so?”

Advice im writing a short historical what-if story about one of the earliest battles of ww1, but im really insecure of its pacing.

Thumbnail

i wasnt sure what subreddit to do with this but i guess this is the one.

im aiming between 2700 to 3100 words and im currently in the 1200s. i have trouble whether or not my informational paragraphs on my character are too long or too short, and im not sure if im getting in the action way too quickly, or its just the short sentences i have within the sequence to attempt a intense atmosphere. ive read it over multiple times but i feel like peer input is what is needed the most.

i sit really uncomfortably with the fact that the conflict happens a half a page after the character focused page. when i read it aloud it sounds fine but i think about how others would read it. im a bit of a novice and ive been experimenting with pacing frequently, and i decided to apply my knowledge into this project.

summary: the pacing personally feels weird and i feel like im getting into the action packed stuff too fast.

this is how its going so far. (sorry for the grammar error lines, can't seem to get rid of them without changing the supposed lines.)

DISCLAIMER!! PLEASE READ!!
mentions of adolf hitler are commonly present in this story

Advice Writing in fragments?

Does anyone else have the problem of not being able to write a story from start to finish. What I mean is I can’t start at the beginning because for me the story starts in the middle. So, I can start a story in the middle, because it comes up in my head. But if I try to start from the beginning I draw a blank, so I figured that I would just write until I have enough then put it in the right order later. It’s like a weird puzzle that starts in the middle and fans out. Does anyone else do this? And if so, has it ever worked out? And no I haven’t finished a story.

Question How do I describe this haircut in a book?

I was scrolling through pinterest and saw this pic and thought this is the perfect haircut for my protagonist. I don't know how to exactly describe it because it looks longer than chin length hair but shorter than shoulder length hair. I'm not good at describing appearances in general and this is even harder

Question trauma and is it overdone to the point were readers might not like it?

genuine question is trauma bad for my mc, I mean he is a young Vietnam vet but I know lots of recent big budget stuff hasn't handled trauma/PTSD/nervous system hypersensitively well. just curious if you find that annoying trope or not. i suffer from a mild form of nervous system hypersensitively myself and found it easy to write detailed descriptions of what that feels more or less like. Short version, is it's flashes or thoughts of bad things/bad people that make you physically tense up and often slightly jerk your head(or when alone or really bad can be more intense shaking of head), swallow several times and think of something begin to move on, and happens whenever throughout the day and is usually worst at night. now since he is decidedly a more tough guy then me and has actual trauma vs me lol i try to use it sparingly and lean into the slightly psychedelic vibes presents as it's set in the 60's but shows him slowly get out of his own head during his Bond/Indiana Jones esq mission with the beautiful tomboy secret agent that becomes his partner and since she is a profiler i do include scenes of her analyzing him and a even more tender scene inspired by asmr comfort type things, and what i often think about when trying to sleep, you know snuggling spooning touching hair stuff like that were she helps him sleep at night as he's been dealing with increasing insomnia throughout the novel.

Question What makes a character that is bad at keeping secrets annoying?

I have a character that is really bad at keeping secrets, and ends up spilling a major secret, against the MC's wishes, which leads to every one finding out about it.

I don't want his action to make him annoying to the reader, since he still has to play a major role in the story, and is the MC's best friend.

So I decided to come here to ask what makes a character that is bad at keeping secrets annoying, and what keeps them well-loved.
