Nostalgia Horoscope scrolls

Post image

I was talking to my niece who’s about 10 younger than me about these. She grew up in NYC where I’ve always lived in LA and she said she never saw these before. Curious if these were just regional or if they were always there on the market checkout line. I also remember always wanting one, but never got one. Anyone remember these?

Yes! Would always see them at the checkout at Kohl's in the Milwaukee area. My parents weren't horoscope people so we never bought them.

I got one in church. Our Sunday school teacher brought one for each of us, then lecturered on how they were evil. We were told to throw them away but I was like, nah, this is cool so I pocketed it.

Anybody remember the dispenser where you had to spin a dial to select the month? I never had money to buy a horoscope, but I could spin the hell out of that dial!

My bestie said she reached for these once as a child and her mom said not to touch them, so then she always believed they were something dirty.

They were "something dirty" like alcohol and cigarettes if you were raised by Christian parents.

I was today years old when I learned that these were not cigarettes. I grew up in Louisiana and most of the adults in my family smoked. My mom was into astrology so idk why I thought these were taboo. I really thought these were single cigarettes. 🤦‍♀️

I can understand why someone might think that haha

Canada! Hells yeah! We had them, just talking to the neighbour about these. The good ol' days

We had them where I grew up in South Carolina, so definitely not regional.

Edit: Did some Googling, apparently the were called Starscrolls.

Ty! This also explains why she wouldn’t remember them if they stopped in ‘96.

u/spinereader81 2d ago

They were right next to the Soap Opera Digest.

You know I can see that image in my head 🤣

Grew up in the midwest, my sister loved these! I was always fascinated by them, but forgot and spent all my money on candy. She made sure to save some change so she could grab one at the register.

1

u/gee8 1982 2d ago

How much did they cost?

5

u/Treadingresin 2d ago

Girrrlll...that was over 40 years ago.

3

u/gee8 1982 2d ago

I just mean ballpark — were they a dollar? 49 cents? I can’t imagine spending a dollar on such a thing today

3

u/Treadingresin 2d ago

I genuinely do not know. Like I said, I spent all my money on candy.

u/KittyTitties666 2d ago

Me too! Bashas', baby

3

u/fourofkeys 2d ago

oh snap. i think my memory is of a smitty's lol.

3

u/KittyTitties666 2d ago

Smitty's! Let's not forget Abco, either

3

u/fourofkeys 2d ago edited 2d ago

my brother worked at abco! sometimes i look up old photos when i'm super nostalgic. their colors were so 90s/desert coded. i understand there is one left, but i don't remember what part of town it's in.

edit: it may actually be a different store that just never did a remodel.

They existed on Long Island (New York). I remember them from my childhood at the hallmark store in town.

6

u/Bastilleinstructor 1977 2d ago

So my mom was into horoscopes, but still wouldn't buy us these. I think I got one, like ever. She said "read your horoscope in the paper in the morning" lol

6

u/Advanced_Reputation7 2d ago

Omg I used to love those things!! I live (and grew up in) the Midwest.

4

u/Glass-Marionberry321 1980 2d ago

Chicago suburbs had them

5

u/earmares 1980 2d ago

Oh, yes, definitely a memory unlocked, wow! I got one or two. Grew up in WY. Gemini over here ♊

4

u/Bromide_detector 2d ago

These are how I learned about the zodiac!  I thought they had something to do with cancer (the only word I could read out of the bunch) and then my mom explained they were nonsense designed to take people's money and no I could not have one 🙄

5

u/MonchichiSalt 2d ago

Oh jeez, I think if I saw them I'd pick mine up for the nostalgia

5

u/Skate_faced 1980 2d ago

Never ever did get a single one of them fuckers back into the tube.

5

u/famousanonamos 2d ago

Oh man, I forgot about these things! I'm in northern CA and they were definitely up at the checkout. Every once in a while my mom would let me get one.

4

u/pamminy_wassle 1983 2d ago

Memory unlocked! We had them in south Florida grocery stores by the checkout. I always wanted one but mom always said no 🙄

4

u/JoyInRepetition8 2d ago

Yup in California abd we got these all the time! If my mom was grocery shopping I was getting a new one lol

4

u/hideNseekKatt 1978 2d ago

These were always by the register when my mom was picking up her cigarettes and Dr. Pepper. She only got me one once and I remember being disappointed by how boring it was and regretting getting that instead of the gummy bears I usually got when she picked up smokes.

3

u/moeninite21 2d ago

Damn, what a flashback

3

u/MyBurnerAccount1977 1977 2d ago

I remember seeing the vending machines for these in random places grocery stores. I don't imagine these being very profitable.

3

u/Apprehensive-Hand673 2d ago

I'm from Boston mass so east coast and my mom always bought these. So I'm sure they were in NY as well.

3

u/Mom2Dos 2d ago

Omg, memory unlocked.

3

u/RiotPurrrl 1981 2d ago

Oh man, I hadn’t thought of these things in decades! They totally fueled my interest in astrology

3

u/Dramatic_Substance36 2d ago

Oh man i last saw these maybe 15-20 years ago, and luckily got one. I think I probably still have it somewhere.

3

u/LittlehouseonTHELAND 1982 2d ago

That’s weird, I grew up in NYC and I got them all the time growing up! Grocery stores and I think drug stores had them. May she just never noticed them?

3

u/1upjohn 1981 1d ago

Yes. I saw them all the time in NYC too.

3

u/LalaLane850 1d ago

Yes I remember these! I’m 41 and from the PNW. I grew up extremely conservative Christian and my mom thought these were from the devil.

4

u/Hellament 2d ago

Were these by chance sold in a small glass test tube that (completely coincidentally) could be used to smoke drugs?

13

u/BaD-princess5150 1983 2d ago

No, I just saw the “roses “ that way these were just taped up.

12

u/earmares 1980 2d ago

No, they were just paper rolls, I believe.

4

u/kukqueen3 1980 2d ago

I also grew up in NYC and have never seen these.

2

u/gildeddoughnut 2d ago

Shit yup we had them in Canada too

2

u/Whatchab 2d ago

I've never seen these, and now I feel horribly left out!

2

u/HereWeFuckingGooo 1983 2d ago

I can smell the patchouli...

2

u/gernblanston512 2d ago

Had them in Texas, would never have thought about it though, definitely unlocked a memory for me

2

u/Immateriumdelirium 2d ago

My god the memory lol. My mother at the register with one of these and misty menthol ultra light 100’s.

Bad day if they only had Virginia slims.

2

u/rebelangel 1981 2d ago

I don’t remember seeing them in California

2

u/nneighbour 2d ago

I remember seeing these at the checkout in Montreal.

2

u/MsModusOperandi 2d ago

Oh dang memory unlocked

Am I allowed to post an Etsy link here? I just found an Etsy shop with vintage horoscope scrolls for sale ... I was always curious about them as a kid, but never got one or saw what they look like unscrolled -- so I went looking for a photo and found this shop (which I have zero affiliation to).

I'll post the link as a response to this comment, just in case it gets deleted...if it does, it's easy enough to find through Google if you're interested....

u/Salty_Antelope10 1d ago

I forgot about these

2

u/Easy-Truth-851 1d ago

Yes!!! I grew up in TN.

1

u/snotparty 2d ago

I had one of these at my desk and it was basically just a fidget toy, trying to get it to spring closed

1

u/Micronto65bymay 2d ago

I thought neices were kids. What happened to me...

4

u/earmares 1980 2d ago

My nephews are 27. 😳

u/BaD-princess5150 1983 2d ago

I also have a way older 1/2 sister, so there are a lot of ways this can happen.
