Discussion Show me your yarn storage!

I just got a craft room and I’m trying to figure out how to organize all my yarn. If y’all could give me some inspiration I’d greatly appreciate it!

Ikea Billy shelves with glass doors. I put lavender sachets near each door gap.

12

u/Alternative_Web6959 1d ago

Does the Lavendar help with moths? I was thinking about cedar.

15

u/Substantial_Pea3462 1d ago

Hey I did lavender AND cedar lol a little bit of each. When I open my yarn cabinet it smells heavenly.

13

u/Imaginary-Crazy1981 1d ago

Honestly I can't tell. I think the glass doors help more than anything. The wood of the units is still fresh and new so I think that helps too. Cedar would be great, I just found lavender cheaper to obtain.

u/squirrelygirlie 1d ago

You could also use cedar pet bedding that can be obtained from any pet store, tractor supply type of store, or I think even Walmart and place it in little sachets. It's very inexpensive and effective.  The smell doesn't maybe last as long due to surface area of the chips but easy enough to replenish every year or so!

You can get cedar planks like these to put in there, and they work well too. I have them spread out through my cloth cubes that slot into a shelving unit in my craft corner. About the size of a card deck.

6

u/MandalaFish 1d ago

Not the poster here but yes, lavender helps. Toooooo much cedar can be toxic. Moths and other bugs dislike lavender.

2

u/Alternative_Web6959 1d ago

Thank y’all for the replies!
I have been stressed about moths. I had a basket on my shelf with my wool, no signs of moths and I removed it and put the wool in a small plastic tub.
My doors need to be adjusted because I never took the time to do it after I hung them. I was too excited. So there is a gap where a moth could enter.
No signs of any but I’m going to go ahead and fix those gaps and get cedar and Lavendar and make little sachets.

Lavender helps repel clothing moths, but if you ever see one, you need traps. Otherwise there is also larvae 🤢

1

u/Alternative_Web6959 15h ago

Thank you. This is a legit fear of mine.

1

u/1K_Sunny_Crew 5h ago

I use Irish Spring soap bars. A tip from the grandmas in my life!

3

u/houseplant-hoarder 1d ago

Nice! I’ll have to look at those.

1

u/litetears 16h ago

So gorgeous!

70

u/justalittleloopi 1d ago

It helps me see what I have and limits me from buying more, since I can't fit more in. If I want new yarn, I have to use some lol

7

u/Alternative_Web6959 1d ago

I have the blue ones too! I got gold knobs for mine as they match the fixtures. I used white ones along the opposite wall. These are the absolute best!!!!

5

u/houseplant-hoarder 1d ago

Ooh I really like that! Where did you get it?

12

u/justalittleloopi 1d ago

It's an ikea Billy bookcase. I have it on an exterior wall facing inward so the yarn never gets direct sunlight.

37

u/diphoemacy 1d ago

I'm pretty good about keeping my stash limited, so it all fits in this "tea cup display shelf" I got on ebay!

3

u/houseplant-hoarder 1d ago

That’s gorgeous! I’d need a bigger one lol 😳

33

u/Cold_Tax_803 1d ago

Antique cedar lined chest and bookshelves

2

u/idoenjoybakedgoods 1d ago

Man this is such a good idea. You don't even need sachets for the moths!

58

u/andromache114 1d ago

I made fake built ins for my craft room by stacking bookshelves from Amazon on top of Walmart dressers. The dressers on the bottom are where I store my yarn. All of my hanks are in freezer bags to keep moths away.

3

u/Loveandeggs 1d ago

Wow what a fancy looking craft room! I’m in love!

4

u/andromache114 1d ago

Thank you! It doubles as my office for WFH so I really wanted it to be fun and cozy

3

u/Odd-Replacement2347 1d ago

So pretty - love how perfectly the love seat/couch fits

2

u/andromache114 14h ago

Thank you!!!! That was actually not planned and just a very happy accident, so I feel so lucky that it worked out

1

u/houseplant-hoarder 1d ago

That looks great!

3

u/andromache114 1d ago

Thank you!!!! I'm honestly shocked at how well it worked out!

1

u/wooly-yarn 15h ago

Great idea!

29

u/teak-decks 1d ago

I'm height limited so kallax for me! (As you can see I'm overflowing and still waiting for a third unit to pop up on fb near me)

Constantly on the look out for the perfect sized plastic boxes to fit in the gaps- because of the ceiling the shelves are a bit off the back wall and I'd like to find sealable boxes which are long enough that they make the most of that space, but also fill up the box. I'll find them eventually!

6

u/legalpretzel 1d ago

I wish ikea had bins with good lids for the kallax.

2

u/Imakestuff_82 1d ago

I saw someone had found another brand of lidded plastic bins that had fit the kallax shelves well awhile ago. I think maybe in a ravelry post about yarn storage. I’ll look out for it tomorrow if I think of it.

2

u/IzoldAnna 1d ago

The best I found there is this.

1

u/IzoldAnna 1d ago

They had an inner holder too. Dunno if it's still available.

2

u/houseplant-hoarder 1d ago

I’ve been looking for them on Marketplace too 😅. They’re so expensive if you buy them new but I dunno if I want to wait for one to pop up/possibly drive far to get them

2

u/teak-decks 1d ago

I live about 40 mins away from an ikea, it's more of a case of waiting for one in the exact configuration I like for me, luckily!

1

u/houseplant-hoarder 1d ago

Ah ok. I’m maybe an hour and a half away? I used to be down the street till we moved lol

2

u/Imakestuff_82 1d ago

I’m four-five hours. Luckily, a friend was going to ikea and asked what I wanted. We had been talking fiber storage for awhile. Now I’m talking with another friend about doing a trip next spring to pick up bookshelves and other storage options for yarn/books and trimming them out so they look like built-ins.

23

u/pokiehol 18h ago

How I store the extra yarn from finished projects

18

u/Blue_eyed_bones 1d ago

Another vote for an Ikea cabinet, Rudsta

1

u/TheArtsyPurl 1d ago

I love the colors you have in that room. It looks so cozy!

1

u/Pregosaurus 1d ago

I love the way you have this corner set up!

17

u/lastpickedforteam 1d ago

This is my go to immediate storage, over the door in the living. I also have a dresser and under bed box full with mostly stuff I have no plans to use.

1

u/Loveandeggs 1d ago

That’s smart and secure 👍

1

u/aw55362 1d ago

Are you me? No wait, my wall is white, not yellow...
But your yarn storage is exactly the same as mine - including the dresser and under-bed box 🤣

1

u/lastpickedforteam 1d ago

Great minds ,

I have sealed tubs I got from Target that have a gasket for sealing and several latches. I don’t want any creepy crawlies in my yarn. It’s for my retirement knitting.

3

u/NinjaDefenestrator 1d ago

Same. I just need to stop being lazy about fitting new yarn/fiber in the bins as I acquire it…but I also like looking at my new treasures. Then suddenly there’s too much to organize all at once. It’s a vicious spiral.

2

u/AnnualWishbone5254 1d ago

It’s definitely NOT aesthetic storage.

5

u/houseplant-hoarder 1d ago

From what I’ve seen that might be the most budget friendly option, a lot of the “cute” storage is so expensive 😅

15

u/Freddykrueger11 1d ago

I am jealous of these beautiful Billy cabinets, but my apartment is small so I'm making due.

7

u/houseplant-hoarder 1d ago

Felt that 😅. The Ikea stuff is gorgeous but soo expensive and I don’t think I can drop $200 on one cabinet 😭

14

u/Alternative_Web6959 1d ago

Billy bookcases with glass doors from IKEA.

13

u/IzoldAnna 1d ago

Malm. :)

3

u/IzoldAnna 1d ago

Accessories.

2

u/houseplant-hoarder 1d ago

I’m trying to find a dresser from Marketplace or a thrift store to put my fabric in but if I find matching ones then maybe I could get one for the yarn too 😅

1

u/Top-Dot-7 1d ago

Mine is Brimnes lol

13

u/theonetrueelhigh 1d ago

7

u/adephage 1d ago

Kudos to you! I don’t think I could sleep with all my unworked yarn staring at me all night lol

2

u/houseplant-hoarder 1d ago

You have so much room for your yarn 🥹

1

u/EffortMindless4705 20h ago

That's so organised!

10

u/jessbeethree 1d ago

I eventually want to get something fancier, but I got these cubes from amazon for about $35 and you can customize the shape. You can combine kits as well to expand. They have hooks on the side to hang things as well, it's been perfect for my craft room.

2

u/houseplant-hoarder 1d ago

I might end up doing something similar 😅 I love all the IKEA stuff I’m seeing but it’s expensive

3

u/wooly-yarn 15h ago

I have cubes like this that I bought from a yarn store that was closing and they were a great bargain.

2

u/jessbeethree 1d ago

Agreed, and that's money I'd rather spend on yarn lol

8

u/Bigirondolphin 1d ago

I got these peg boards off Amazon!

10

u/NanoKnitter 1d ago

I tried plastic boxes at first but could never find what I needed. The shelves are wonderful

8

u/ConradVeidtsghost 1d ago

Pardon the mess, but I have more hobbies than this closet can reasonably accommodate. Not pictured above the yarn is fabric and scrapbooking supplies.

My stash is 100% natural fibers so I use weather tight storage containers from Home Depot for animal fibers and regular storage bins for my cotton yarns. Bottom tub is spinning fiber, middle tub is hand spun and garment quantities, top tub is single skeins and sock yarns. Strewn atop the bins are current WIPS. Small tubs are for amigurumi, next to that is more WIPS plus spinning tools.

1

u/houseplant-hoarder 1d ago

No worries, I also have more hobbies than my room will be able to reasonably accommodate 😅 (which is exactly why I’m posting lol)

4

u/ConradVeidtsghost 1d ago

If your stash is primarily animal fibers really recommend completely forgoing aesthetics and getting yourself some kind of water proof air tight storage. Aesthetically pleasing yarn storage is nice to look at but pests are devastating. If you use mostly synthetics and plant fibers the only thing you have to watch out for is sun damage.

1

u/houseplant-hoarder 1d ago

Right now it’s mostly acrylics since I don’t have money for fancy yarn 😅. I do want to get nicer yarn eventually tho

1

u/Ceight-bulldog 1d ago

This looks like a smaller version of mine. I’ve got about 12 bins in a closet 😂

1

u/ConradVeidtsghost 1d ago

These bins are 19x28” and 10” deep and are packed tightly. My stash is overwhelmingly large for me 😬

2

u/Ceight-bulldog 20h ago

Mine is too large for my slow knitting too. I bought a bunch of bins from a neighbor whose mom couldn't knit anymore for $200. It was too good of a deal to pass on, especially considering it's all wool or wool blends with cashmere 😬

7

u/Most-Independence-45 1d ago

Just bought 4 of these on my local FB Marketplace yesterday!! Tossed on a few bags and boxes from the floor so excuse the mess at the moment.

I was hoping to just use the open cubbies but….I live in the southwest desert and it’s dusty here. Add to that, my home is a midcentury ranch with original windows so regardless of air filters, dust circulates.

I’m going to put a canvas box in each cubby to keep the yarn protected

8

u/Substantial_Pea3462 1d ago

Another Ikea cabinet! It's a bit fuller now and the top is more chaotic with scraps. Sometimes I just sit in front of it and pull it all out to squish and sniff it all, get inspired. I have it organized by weight for the most part. Not pictured: two large clear bins of acrylics (at this point I use those for swatching, playing, and trying new techniques) and bulkier weights.

7

u/Cheytolirious 1d ago

I'm just starting out my collection, but I am using this shoe cabinet from Target to hold my yarn! (I own more yarn, this image was taken after I built it) Stole the idea from my friend!! All credit goes to her (: It's really nice for small spaces and avoids visual clutter!

7

u/ArthriticKnitter1980 1d ago

Since I work from home I don't own a lot of clothes. I turned the closet in my office to my craft closet.

5

u/Critical-Shock-1231 1d ago

My stash is split between those clear over-the-door shoe organizers and a repurposed bar cart I found at a flea market, works great for keeping cakes visible and easy to grab

1

u/houseplant-hoarder 1d ago

I’ve been looking at those! I’ll have to keep the bar cart idea in mind, there’s a couple thrift stores and antique places that I was gonna check out today (we just moved to a new town so I’m trying to get acquainted with everything lol)

8

u/lovinglifeatmyage 1d ago

Mines really bad. Takes up an entire wardrobe, then of course I have other bits n pieces ‘hidden’ in discreet places 😳

5

u/Imakestuff_82 1d ago

I saved up and bought ikea kallax shelves, and the bins that fit. I put all my yarn into ziploc bags and set the bins up as kind of a file system. I also have three under the bed plastic boxes that the yarn is also ziploc bagged inside. I’ve had too many friends end up with moths and lose large amounts of their stash and 98% of my yarn is wool/alpaca.

1

u/houseplant-hoarder 1d ago

I wish I had the money for those! Walmart does have some similar ones that aren’t as expensive so I’m hoping they might go on sale for Black Friday

1

u/Imakestuff_82 1d ago

Target has some as well. They go on sale very regularly! I’ve bought one two by two from there to use as a bedside shelf/nightstand. The 13” openings and bins fit the longer skeins really well, I slide mine into a gallon sized bag and can fit five or six per bag without squishing them together. I buy the store brand ziploc bags as well.

I’ll take some pics tomorrow.

1

u/houseplant-hoarder 1d ago

Yeah, I know about the Target ones (I used to work there) but they’re still a lil expensive 😅

4

u/Pregosaurus 1d ago

I LOVE looking at how people store their yarn. Mine are tall plastic drawers at the moment. Not aesthetic in the slightest.

I would love to get a billy bookcase or one of the shorter cabinets from IKEA and have a lovely little yarn nook but my house is tiny and space is at a premium so my yarn is spread out at the moment. Although y'all are giving me ideas 👀♥️

2

u/houseplant-hoarder 1d ago

I know right? I had mine in a big woven basket but I think it’s time for an upgrade 😅

1

u/Pregosaurus 4h ago

Ohhh I like the idea of a big woven basket

5

u/sifsete 16h ago

I've got a shelf in my living room for my 2-3 current project bags. I've got a 'scrap skeins' tote for leftovers, then my office closet has this. And my organizers are usually divided into weight of yarn.

1

u/sifsete 16h ago

In general, I asked around the fam for any extra box organizers like this, and just repurposed a shelving unit that we'd stuck in our upstairs closet when we rearranged our kids' rooms.

4

u/SadIndependence3475 1d ago

I do not have a picture right now but my husband took a wall in our bedroom and hung peg board and I have a very colorful wall of yarn on pegs!

1

u/houseplant-hoarder 1d ago

I’ve seen pictures of those! I’m guessing you have the short wide skeins of yarn for that tho? I mostly have long skinny ones, so I don’t think that would work unless I found really long pegs 😅

2

u/SadIndependence3475 1d ago

I have real long pegs from Home Depot. Across the very top I keep the big 1# skeins on top, some I can fit 2 cakes on and it cascades down from there. I wish I had a pic on me. I lay there and place colors together in my head while working on what ever is in my hands.

4

u/usernamesoccer 1d ago

This bookcase is just like the Billy from ikea but it’s $40 from target. I was shocked because I was exchanging a Stanley cup I got as a gift and it covered a book shelf. Anyways it’s been standing sturdy for well over a year now and I love it. This photo is a few years old itself. Bottom few shelves are cut off. It’s 5 shelves I thin

Highly recommend if you’re on a budget

1

u/houseplant-hoarder 1d ago

I bought the shorter version for my daughter’s room! I actually used to work there so I’m pretty familiar with their storage 😅. That was one of the options I was considering tbh

5

u/ddagger 1d ago

What type of yarn do you have, and do you want to display it or keep it protected? If most of your yarn is wool, then it's best protected from pests by storing in gasket sealed bins. Sterilite has some that are transparent so you can see what's in there. If most of your yarn is synthetic, then you can freely display it on the wall or open shelves, but it might get dusty or faded if exposed to sunlight.

5

u/ChasingHappy74 11h ago

Half the room is wire shelving that's ziptied together and everything is bagged because I live on a dirt road and dust is an issue. The other side of the room is all totes.

9

u/Due_Mark6438 1d ago

This is today's storage.

Before this I used storage tubs on shelves and the vacuum bags in the tubs.

1

u/houseplant-hoarder 1d ago

I definitely want to get some kind of cube storage if possible

3

u/TopCat7064 1d ago

I use the watertight totes from the container store.

3

u/throughmybones 1d ago

A smaller storage but we’re slowly building up lol

3

u/kayjills 1d ago

No photo at the moment but did 12x12 cubes in a closet with X inserts in some but mostly just large clear zippered cubes to keep them clean.
I have a tendency to overbuy for a project and have extras to store vs buying yarn without any intent (although there’s some cheap stuff from kits I bought early on in learning).
I just separate by project (several blankets and sweaters in progress) and then all the “extra” yarn gets sorted by type and grouped in color families

3

u/Embarrassed-Plum-468 1d ago

You don’t wanna see the disaster closet I have created…

3

u/IzoldAnna 1d ago

Just realised, that if you want Ikea and airtight, then Ivar shelves and Samla boxes are perfect. I use it for other stuff.

1

u/IzoldAnna 1d ago

As you can see, I added curtain holders too :))

3

u/Bake_knit_plant 1d ago

When I moved to this apartment I had to clear my yarn and organize it because I was moving into a much smaller apartment.

I gave away five black trash bags filled with yarn. Any single skeins, anything that I didn't think I would use in the next 2 years or so, anything that no longer delighted me. And then everything fit in totes. I have 36 24x 30 totes. They are in my attic and I have them in totes by thickness so I have them marked seven (extra bulky), I have six (bulky) I have five (chunky) I have four (worsted) and within that it sorted by color if possible.

I typically don't use anything thinner than that because I knit with giant knitting needles so if I'm using the worsted weight I'm usually using two to three strands held together.

I had a 26 ft U-Haul and the first thing that went in was all the yarn up against the back of the truck, and when the teenage boys who are friends of my grandson actually pulled stuff down and saw all that yarn I thought they were going to have heart attacks!

Hopefully you have shown a little more restraint than me and you don't have as much yarn to organize :)

1

u/houseplant-hoarder 20h ago

Not quite that much gladly 😅. I had been keeping it in one of those giant woven baskets but there’s starting to be too much to fit in it. I get what you’re saying about the uhaul tho, I think we rented a 26 foot for our move and somehow not everything fit (we were moving out of a 600 square foot apartment! That was when my boyfriend realized how efficient I am at stuffing as many things into a closet as possible 😅). We still had to take multiple trips with our car, I think six or seven trips maybe? We’re glad that part’s over but of course now we gotta unpack everything 😅

2

u/Maironad 1d ago

I just bought a set of IKEA Kallax shelves with drawer inserts and doors. Plan to assemble them next week after I finish painting the room.

1

u/houseplant-hoarder 1d ago

I’ve seen those, I love how they look but they’re so expensive 😭. I see them on Marketplace occasionally but their either too far away or someone snaps them up before me

2

u/SimbaRph 1d ago

I'm not home right now so no photo but I bought two wooden shoe boxes that have about 20 cubbies each and mounted them in the wall one in top of the ither

1

u/houseplant-hoarder 1d ago

I was thinking about doing those, it seems to be one of the cheapest options 😅

2

u/Mobstathalobsta 1d ago

2 gallon ziplock backs stuffed in repurposed fabric baskets that are stuffed in my closet, and a cheap zip up bag from ikea designed for under the bed storage.

2

u/kieratea 1d ago

Funny that nearly eveyone uses IKEA to some degree. They do have such great storage products though! Mine are all in IKEA Samla storage bins organized by weight and stored in the closet of my office/plant/craft room. I could maybe do something like the Billy bookcases with the doors but with my cats, out of sight out of mind entirely is the safest option. I also prefer to keep everything in ziplocs to prevent bugs and dust so my yarn would never look pretty as a display.

u/WRP_weaver24 20h ago

2

u/slutforgreentea 16h ago

i don’t have a picture but i have a big rack on my door

2

u/knothereforit 2h ago

1

u/houseplant-hoarder 1h ago

I love that! Did it come with the decal or did you make/buy it? 👀

4

u/MagicalMiniatures 1d ago

Whatever you do, don't do what I did. I moved and loaded all my yarn in a 70 gallon duffel. I've since gotten over the door storage but it only BARELY fits most of my worsted weight solid colored yarn. Some of my one pound skeins are still slumming it up in the duffel

1

u/houseplant-hoarder 1d ago

It’s mostly acrylic 😅 I’d love to have more natural fibers one day but they’re out of budget right now

2

u/ddagger 1d ago

Nothing wrong with acrylic. 🙂 I just wanted to mention that the fiber content might be a factor in storage options. Happy creating! 😉

Plus an antique yarn cabinet—an anniversary gift from my husband.

1

u/Polythene_pams_bag 1d ago

I have a kallax and drawers for my yarn thrown in the naughty corner because I have nowhere else for it!

1

u/MindfulOnce1992 19h ago

My stash is ridiculously large. I use these totes:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0F4QPNZLT?ref_=ppx_hzsearch_conn_dt_b_fed_asin_title_2&th=1 Each of these totes holds 3.16 cubic feet of yarn.

They're stacked in the closet of my studio (converted bedroom). Pouches in the lid accommodate an 8.5x11 sheet of paper. Mine are sorted by color (whites/pastels, more whites/pastels, brights/midtones blue green purple, brights/midtones red/orange/yellow, dark/black/variegated/specialty, and WIPs).
