Misty destroying the radio so they’d be there longer
16
u/Mickey_58 1d ago
she obviously wasn’t aware of this at the time and I’m not even sure if the creators were destroying the flight transmitter did nothing because that really only does something if they land in the water and it just gives away where they crashed but since they crashed on land it does nothing (but the intention to keep them there was real)

That is totally bullshit :D
17
u/darknini 1d ago
she definitely knew what she was doing when breaking the black box, however you need to consider that she is sixteen years old, and probably did not realize the permanence of her actions until winter finally came. i feel like you guys forget that they are just little girls.
30
u/pigsinatrenchcoat 1d ago
I think you forget that people were already fucking dead or horrifically injured and she did it anyway. Doesn’t matter whether she thought it was permanent. She knew how bad it was even in the beginning. Her being a teenager is not an excuse for what she did.
8
u/Majestic-Dot4225 19h ago
We can argue Misty's decision to break the box was clouded by the "euphoria" of the moment, cause it was the first time everyone praised her. However she had SO many times when she could have just said something about it.
When it was revealed Shauna was pregnant. When Laura Lee died. When they were starving. When they ate Jackie. When Lottie was close to dying. Before starting every hunt. Before the SECOND WINTER FFS.
She REMEMBERED about the damn box the whole time, but only talked about it when she was fed up with the situation at hand.
1
u/Mickey_58 13h ago
Obviously, it’s so crazy that she didn’t mention it and that is entirely inexcusable and she definitely should’ve mentioned it way earlier, but that is not the reason they had to stay multiple winters ,why Laura died and when they were eating Jackie, she’s not the reason these events happened except maybe you can make an argument for Jackie because if she had mentioned what she had done she would’ve been sent out into the cold and would’ve died instead of jackie, but maybe they with would have died. It’s really messed up what she did and she should’ve mentioned it way earlier, but she’s not the reason those events happened.
8
u/Initial_Assist8481 13h ago
There’s no excuse for what she did, but there is explanation. I don’t feel anyone here disagrees with that. The explanation is she was a lonely teenage girl, who made a horrible decision for herself and others to continue receiving the praise she was getting for like the first time ever? I work with teenagers for a living, and every time they do something wrong we don’t excuse but we do zoom out. What led them to this decision? What can we do to alter that wrong behavior? How do we show them there’s better ways to go about being loved or honored.
Hell, some adults do the frightening shit they do because no one saw them as a human being when they were young. Just throwing “bad people” in a pen or killing them has obviously never solved the world’s problems.
Again, I do not excuse Misty’s choice to break the box. I do recognize her why, and wish that it wasn’t survival of the fittest in the 90’s so she could grow out of manipulating situations for attention and love. Life doesn’t work that way, so we’ll see happens with her in season 4. 🤷♀️
Oh also, this is all a tv show for entertainment that reflects real human emotions and behaviors. So in the grand scheme of things - it is what it is, besties.

The internets infantilization of like everyone is insane
2
u/darknini 16h ago
it’s not infantilization if they are literally kids? mind you it’s a tv show and you are acting like we are committing a crime lol
1
u/Mickey_58 13h ago
No it’s not. She did not break the black box, and anyways the black box only records what happens before the crash, and cant be easily broken in case of a hijacking’s, and only has a purpose after being found. She broke the flight transponder that is useless in a crash, as any use it could of had (ie them saying they were in the Canadian alps) was useless after crash and most likely already sent to air traffic control. That said Misty was thinking of trying to keep them there because they were relying on her and she was being praised. This is really messed up, but you got to keep in mind that she was a teenage girl who had no idea what really was happening and thought they would probably be found in a few days. While she probably didn’t make them stay in the woods longer, that doesn’t mean what she did wasn’t wrong because it’s the intention that matters, but she did not actually keep them there longer.

Lying to Travis about Javi being dead… and then also letting him drown
30
u/hoki199 1d ago
In my opinion fabricating proof that Javi was dead was the wise option as Travis was going out everyday farther and farther wich was dangerous and to everyones knowledge Javi was dead Jackie didnt survive a night outside so how could a kid survive for months.

I love my baby Natalie sm but I’d argue her letting Javi die in her place might arguably be worse. Ben wanted to die, yea she stabbed him herself, meanwhile Javi drowned but like….. Javi was calling out her name to save him and she was gonna until Misty said if you save him they’re all gonna continue to hunt you so Nat stopped. Idk personally I would have more guilt & trauma over the thought that I personally did not save someone to save myself from this fuked up ritual we created.
15
u/pigsinatrenchcoat 1d ago
To be fair, Javi probably would’ve died even after they pulled him out. And as horrific as that was, I can’t confidently say I would’ve done it differently if I was her. I can’t imagine how hopeless and terrified she was in that moment.

u/brat_777_cvnt Conniving, Poodle-Haired Little Freak 1d ago
but that’s why we love her because she made the right choice in the end and i wouldn’t say she redeemed herself because one life isn’t more important than the other, but she redeemed who she became in the end.

Which is a very plausible reason for half of the scenarios in this Reddit thread. I’m just replying to the question “what’s the worst thing your fav character did” Not saying I judge her or have considered what I could of done differently, Nat is literally the most morally sound out of all the girls.

The list is quite long but I think the worst thing is that she had a child while she was nowhere near psychologically healthy enough to do so and her issues and trauma seeped into her parenting, which impacted her daughter likely for life.
13
u/queermediabait Shauna 21h ago
Yeah, and you can tell she regrets it too: “You have a kid you don’t want to save a marriage you got into out of guilt and shame”… It’s rough because you can tell that she does love Callie. She just doesn’t really know how to.
18
u/Everything_Metal 1d ago
YES! Having any kids was such a shitty thing for Shauna to do. I've always blamed adult Shauna super heavily for that.
11
u/Some_Lack_3448 1d ago
Either pressure from Jeff or other family members or Callie was a way for Shauna to feel what she felt with her son
6
u/darknini 1d ago
girl come on, you can’t always blame jeff for shauna making horrible decisions and taking no accountability for them. this argument is so stale.
7
u/funeraIpyre 1d ago
i actually agree with their argument, but with the caveat that none of that is an excuse. one of those things probably did happen (i’d argue wanting to feel a connection like to her son again), but regardless of anything nothing can excuse any of her actions in nearly the entire show lol. something no one is ever gonna convince me is that shauna did nothing wrong 😅
1
u/Some_Lack_3448 6h ago edited 3h ago
Yes that was the point I was trying to make😭like it isn't an excuse for why Shauna* ended treating Callie how she did, but I fear why she was even born in the first place is more complex than 'we're just trying for a baby'
5
u/Majestic-Dot4225 19h ago
Literally. Nothing forbade Shauna from pulling a Van, going to a place where people didn't know her, and restarting from scratch.
2
u/Some_Lack_3448 18h ago
Maybe, JUST MAYBEEE Shauna isnt wired like van and maybe her marriage to Jeff was out of guilt, not actual love of him? Also Van literally attended her wedding with tai.
2

Destroyed the black box (maybe not the worst thing really, but possibly? lol)
31
u/Everything_Metal 1d ago
I think due to intentions/mindset/circumstance, I find Misty's attempted rape of Ben and killing people to be worse.
Obviously this is just my own impression, but I truly think Misty wasnt thinking a ton when she broke the box, or at most figured, "this will delay rescue, I can be valued, and then we get rescued." I don't think she wanted them to be stuck forever. And I think if even one week had passed before she found the box, she wouldn't have destroyed it.
So I think its rash and selfish and harmful, but not as evil as trying to drug and assault someone.
And I love Misty as a character.

u/laughingintothevoid Nugget 1d ago edited 1d ago
And her torturing an elderly patient, and she was definitely gonna rape or coerce and, ya know, maybe kill and eat her date in Ep 2. Nat saved that man's life.
*Jfc EDIT: the latter bit was intended in a similar lighthearted tone to other comments such as the one about Laura Lee. I misjudged the tone and the room on Misty since I was more active and I won't make the same mistake again. I was referring to a common discussion point from around the time of S1. I thought it was more recognizable.

u/laughingintothevoid Nugget 1d ago edited 1d ago
As I said, it's not that serious. It used to be a fun topic of discussion that the first few episodes had little jokes about Misty still being a cannibal, you can look it up. I guarantee you'll find it. I guess this community has moved past that being a recognizable thing we joke about. I didn't know.
*This person who kicked this off by insulting me and is weirdly digging in severely misread tone and connotation of my comment.
As for the rest, someone else said "attempted rape" first and she did do that to Ben, and idk if you missed this but in addition to her guilting tactics it's heavily implied she sabotaged her car to force her reluctant date to drive her home. It's a dark scenario and with her history, yes, it seems like at best she's going to basically try to browbeat him into sex while fully understanding he doesn't want to. There's a very direct parallel to her "if you thought I was pretty you'd come inside" and how she got Ben to agree to Doomcoming. And she didn't just physically attempt to touch Ben while he was sleeping, please remember she poisoned him to keep him in her care.
I find it ridiculous to be called "unwell" for watching the show and seeing the patterns in her that all viewers were blatantly meant to see just because folks relate to some parts of her.
* u/Everything_Metal Thanks lol. I guess I can't reply because I blocked someone elsewhere in this thread, they always change how it works, but I didn't want to not reply to the one positive response.
u/funeraIpyre Right, you're not the person I was referring to. That's why I said "the person" and not "you" while I was replying to you. I also know you didn't call me unwell, referring to it was not saying that it was you. It was just part of talking through the whole thing, which I did to you, not the other person, exactly because you were not acting the same way as them. We're on the same page about everything you just said. 👍 And no matter how silly a topic may be I always appreciate anyone online who will say they changed their mind.
4
u/Everything_Metal 1d ago
For what it's worth, I feel you made a very normal comment, that like you said has already been said a lot on this sub, And the response was totally weird and uncalled for.

u/funeraIpyre 1d ago
i wasnt a part of insulting you at all….it was never my intention to side with anyone causing you harm. i seriously just got a notification about this post, haven’t watched YJ in about a year now, and wanted to share my opinion.
i do agree with you after the stuff you laid out in these comments, i had no idea this was ever a joke among the YJ community. i did not call you unwell, and never intended any of this to be serious. i legitimately just shared my opinion on the topic, which like i said, i agree with you now on.
2
u/laughingintothevoid Nugget 1d ago
Ok! Have a great day.
[It was mostly lighthearted, lots of people there are in jokes in the writing that are mostly just tonally dark humor hints that Misty is still a cannibal as an adult, but this comment doesn't inspire me to talk it out with you. She was blatantly manipulative and coercive to get her date inside the house. And her torturing a patient is literally a scene. I'll go be unwell though, don't worry about it.]
3
u/funeraIpyre 1d ago
i do agree with the fact that she was very manipulative and coercive of her date, and i’ve always thought that was fucked up, but i still don’t think she planned on killing, eating, or raping him personally
-1
u/darknini 1d ago
idk if you watched season three, you’d see she had a pretty visceral reaction when melissa admitted that shauna made her eat a piece of her own arm. so i am pretty positive it is not hinted anywhere that misty is a cannibal in the modern timeline. it’s funny that you say you aren’t gonna have a conversation with me but reply in a way that argues my point lol.
1
u/nyaphometnikko 15h ago
How is saying Misty was going to rape and or eat someone "lighthearted"? 😭 What do you think that word means?
1
u/Everything_Metal 1d ago
Someone is unwell because you don't like their casual TV show theory? That several people share? Bit extreme and unkind.
-1
u/darknini 1d ago
not at all, anyone is free to have their own theories. the reason she’s unwell is because she is making extremely out of left field assumptions about a character who really has shown no examples of what their theory entails. misty wasn’t even super cannibalistic in the teen timeline. she ate jackie because she was starving, and later said she wasn’t that freaked out by it because her best friend had just confided in her that she’d already eaten people before. she also didn’t want to kill ben or have him eaten, she said that in season three.

This is the most biased answer ever, but:
Shauna killed and ate a rabbit.
I've loved Melanie Lynskey since I saw Heavenly Creatures when I was sixteen years old. There is nothing a character played by her could ever do to make me turn on them. Shauna could straight up kill Callie and I'd still be on her side. That being said, I'm a bunny mom so knowing she killed one so brutally and then ate it (out of spite, not necessity) upsets me.
Believe me, I'm well aware that this is an unhinged answer, but it's honest.

Exactlyyyy. If she can't control the "other Tai" (which is just her and she refuses to get help bc shes an idiot) then idgafff. That scene made me drop the show for months. I just cannot. I hate Shauna too lmao. Tai and Shauna r my most hated characters for sure.
2
u/laughingintothevoid Nugget 1d ago
I'm definitely a person who fnds this unhinged, but the level of unhinged somewhat depends if this reflects your general sentiment on all animals (like if you're a vegan/vegetarian/whatever), or if it's bunny specific and just because you have bunnies.
The latter is more unhinged, if unclear.
1
u/Free-IDK-Chicken Go fuck your blood dirt 1d ago
I eat meat, but that doesn't mean I enjoy it when TV characters kill animals. I also know wild rabbits and domestic bunnies are different species, but still.
0
u/friendly-pige0n 10h ago
This is like a different level of cognitive dissonance. Are you seriously willing to pay someone to raise an animal in horrible conditions and slaughter or gas them as they scream in pain, but draw the line at, Shauna fuckig Shipman of all people, killing a rabbit? The hypocrisy is crazy.
Listen, I know this comment may come off as harsh and my intention isn’t to ridicule you personally, but maybe to draw your attention to how your morality does not lin up with your actions. Maybe I’m being a little too graphic, but don’t you see how ridiculous it sounds when you put it all together? Because I can assure you factory farms are a lot more brutal than Shauna was with that rabbit, you just ignore it because you don’t have to look at it. All that being said I really hope my reply encourages you to reevaluate how your morality lines up with what’s on your plate and maybe try to reduce your consumption of meat (maybe all animal products) or maybe even stop eating it entirely, because I can see your heart is already there and eliminating meat can be easier than it seems.2

i have a genuine question, how does one justify adult shauna masturbating to callie’s teen boyfriend? i love young her but as soon as i saw that scene i couldn’t stomach her adult character anymore. melanie does play her brilliantly though. i want to like her because i love a complex female character, i just can’t get past the borderline pedophilia
11
u/Free-IDK-Chicken Go fuck your blood dirt 1d ago
I actively pretend that didn't happen. Willful denial.
That being said - Shauna is not really attracted to young boys. She would never have attempted anything sexual with Callie's boyfriend. The scene was to show how deeply traumatized Shauna is. Emotionally, a big part of her is still that teenage girl trapped in the wilderness.
4
3
u/ranch_commercial I like your pilgrim hat 1d ago
I feel like they were trying to show the parallels between callie and jackie or something, like shauna’s unhealthy… boundaries? More like lack of boundaries? when it comes to her closest female relationships and THEIR relationships. BUT i dont think the writers realized how truly terrible it made her look 😭
I think tv show writers are desensitized to the concept of adult-minor stuff cause its seriously treated so nonchalantly in shows most of the time??? Which makes me think they didnt intend for that scene to make her irredeemable, they just dont understand where the line is for the audience.
With that understanding, i also choose to believe it didnt happen 😭 the writers dont WANT me to care that it happened so im gonna believe it just didnt (unless its relevant ofc)
2
u/notchasityy 1d ago

Well my favorite is Shauna so…take over the society that was built for the group’s all collective survival and turn it into a murderous dictatorship because her teenage friends understandably couldn’t handle the intense mental health issues and downward spiral she went on after Jackie and wilderness baby? Like I don’t think her actions are justifiable but that’s part of what makes her so interesting, I think a lot of real people act in ways that aren’t justifiable and that are due to mental illness. Still my fave!
15
u/TheBestGamerInTown Smoking Chronic 1d ago
I can’t choose just one…
-Killed an innocent man impulsively
-Slept with her best friend’s boyfriend and when confronted about it played the victim, then let the same friend freeze to death in the wilderness
-Bit off a piece of an ex gf’s arm and made her eat it
-The thing with Mari’s hair really freaked me out. That entire pit scene and what came after it was the hardest watch of the show for me
Shauna is an absolute narcissist and psychopath who is also very sadistic. She takes pleasure off the emotional and physical pain of others, and it’s evident in both the teen and adult timeline that she gets an adrenaline rush from scaring people and asserting dominance over them.
…. I just can’t help but love her character😂. She’s just so unhinged and chaotic, watching her unravel has been quite the journey and I’m excited to see season 4 play out. Both actresses are incredible.

Yes, but her not knowing he was under the influence means she didn't do a bad thing, it was just an unfortunate outcome that neither of them were capable of preventing
-1
u/regen_tochter 1d ago
I agree that she didn‘t do it intentionally, but it is still objectively a bad thing, since her and Travis not knowing about the drugs don‘t change that he was on drugs. Especially since he did not know he was going to consume them, he couldn’t really express consent to having intercourse whilst under the influence. I do get the impression that he isn’t supposed to be actively tripping yet when he and Jackie start though, I think it’s just sort of like … just because you consent to having sex, doesn’t mean that you consent to everything that could possibly happen during that act. There’s still boundaries that can apply and this could‘ve been one them. I absolutely agree that Jackie couldn’t have prevented this short of simply not having intercourse with him, so it wouldn‘t be fair to portray her as some predator praying on the vulnerable of course, but it is still the worst thing she did factually speaking imo.
3
u/Drew_S_05 1d ago
It's a bad thing that happened, but not a bad thing SHE did. The only one really at fault for it is Misty.
-2
u/regen_tochter 1d ago
I don‘t necessarily disagree! Chances are Jackie would‘ve absolutely acted differently had she known, she obviously did not set out to sleep with somebody drugged that night. My point is just that Travis possibly would‘ve acted differently as well, and regardless of her innocent intentions, she played (although unknowingly) a part in this, which objectively makes it the worst thing she did. I think we might‘ve just interpreted the question a bit differently 😅

Yeah you’re definitely not the kind of person to be stuck in the woods with.

Axe murdering, eating the guy's head/brain matter after, manipulating her friends into a cult, stealing from TJ Maxx... idk, take your pick. It's a long list.
