Asia My Surgical Abortion Experience at 4W3D in Thailand (mid 30s)
I read a lot about the options here and even ordered from WOW. I immediately paid the 70 euro donation, but before they could respond to me, I read about the option of going to Thailand. Because abortion is illegal in the Philippines, I was a little afraid of doing it myself, given my age and my other health concerns. I decided the best and safest choice was to fly to Thailand and have health professionals handle it for me.
Before the hospital
We arrived in Thailand in the early morning, so we slept first and then went to the hospital in the early afternoon. I was told not to eat for two hours before the surgical abortion.
My timeline
1:32pm: Arrived at Building B, right where the cab drops you off
1:33pm: Paid 500 baht, then waited in the TV area
1:40pm: Ultrasound
1:45pm: First consultation
1:55pm: Vitals
2:05pm: Second consultation. I signed papers, and they explained the instructions and what to expect
2:10pm: Paid 10,500 baht by credit card, then waited in the TV area
2:35pm: Brought upstairs in Building B by elevator. My husband was told to wait in Building A, Room 201, which is connected to Building B, and that I'd be about 3 hours
On the 2nd floor, I had to leave my bag, slippers, and phone in a locker before being ushered up to the 4th floor
2:40pm: On the 4th floor, I changed into a two-piece hospital gown. This is also where the procedure is done
About 3:00pm: The procedure started. I was knocked out, and the next thing I remember is waking up groggy in the recovery room
BP before: 120/80. BP right after: 160/100
After recovery, I was ushered back down to the 2nd floor to get my things from the locker. It connects to Building A, where my husband was waiting in Room 201
4:30pm: Done, waiting outside for our Grab
5:04pm: Back at the hotel. BP 128/74, pulse 86
What it was like
There were many staff, so everyone gets looked after.
Other women were there with their partners. I think I was the only Filipina. Be prepared that you may see some women crying, overwhelmed, scared, or unsure.
Total time from arrival to leaving was about 3 hours.
My bleeding was light and I had no pain at all. I was just a little dizzy, and my appetite was already back.
Follow-up checkup
I went back the day before my flight to make sure everything was gone. They did another ultrasound and the doctor spoke to me. He gave me these reminders:
- No sex for 2 weeks, then use a condom after that to reduce the risk of infection
- No lifting heavy weights for 2 weeks
- No strenuous exercise for 2 weeks
The follow-up checkup was free, with no additional charge.
Expenses
Hospital fees: 500 baht + 10,500 baht = 11,000 baht (about ₱20,000)
Flights: ₱23,500 per person (a little expensive because my flight was 5 days after finding out, and I didn't want to wait longer)
Hotel: ₱17,500 (this can be cheaper, it depends on where you would like to stay)
Food: approx ₱12,000 (can be cheaper or more expensive, it depends on you)
Grab: approx ₱4,000 (this is only for my trips to and from the hospital and airport, not other locations)
The 70 euro WOW donation was refunded to me
Total: approx ₱77,000 (about US$1,250)
The experience was smooth and quick. Everyone at Klongtun was non-judgmental, accommodating, and professional. If you have questions, feel free to comment.
