Announcement r/accelerate hits 100,000 members! The acceleration is accelerating! 🚀

100,000 people have now decided that accelerating technological progress is more interesting than complaining about it.

We were celebrating 69,000 members just a couple of months ago. Now we've hit six figures.

And somehow, the growth is still accelerating.

Just look at the past 30 days:

  • 12.2 million views
  • 59,400 published comments
  • 1,500 published posts

A special shoutout to our incredible mod team.

Since starting this subreddit, they've manually banned an astonishing 10,498+ decels, luddites, anti-AIs, doomers, spammers and trolls.

Our mod team is a small, incredibly hardworking group of volunteers. They deserve enormous respect for giving up their own time to help create something surprisingly rare on Reddit: a place where people can actually be optimistic about AI, biotechnology and technological progress without being drowned out by decels and doomers. Decels are a very loud minority. And despite their best efforts to sabotage this place, the subreddit just keeps growing.

Thank you to everyone who posts, comments, shares breakthroughs, contributes to discussions and helps make this such an excellent community. It's genuinely remarkable to see how far we've come, and even more exciting to imagine where we're going.

100,000 members.

Glad this sub exists. Not really a fan of singularity because of the mods there.

u/voidwell88 5d ago

So nows a good time for me to speak up (I was there gandalf, 3,000 yrs ago)

Way back before Singularity became a large sub it was "the place" to go to discuss the type of things we discuss around here.

But, something I learned. As the sub grew and grew the overall tone and narrative changed and the conclusion I came to is that any sub, once it becomes too large inevitably turns that way as humans are more negative than positive by nature.

Add big numbers of casuals on top of that and well, the positive spark that was once there is gone..

So congrats Accelerate, on 100k.

Now I can only hope this sub doesn't share a similar fate, maybe it won't eh?

u/KrazyA1pha 5d ago

Everything you said is true. But ALSO there are large subs with excellent moderation that don't fall into this trap.

/r/accelerate has crossed many thresholds that most subs fail to make it through, so that gives me some faith

u/stealthispost Acceleration: Light-speed | AI accelerationist 5d ago

it's only possible because we've banned 10k decels. That's the main reason I think. In essence, this is a space defined by what isn't there. Is that zen? Or just like a donut?

7

u/KrazyA1pha 5d ago

Right on. I've been here since the beginning and there's no doubt in my mind that the moderation is exactly why the community still works. I think you're approaching it exactly the right way.

The challenge will be continuing to meet the demands of a fast growing sub. But the AI tools that are already assisting with moderation should scale really well.

Reddit's future mod tool rules hub seems to have ai feature. In the future you guys gonna have the built in tools for it.

thanks! your comment made me apply for beta-testing it!

3

u/girlgamerpoi 5d ago

Glad to hear it. I applied too lol.

Just wanted to say thank you for keeping this sub a better place

The problem is that Reddit has historically removed mods from subs they've created when they don't play ball, and placed in mod teams from other subs who they know will follow instructions when needed.

If a sub gets big enough the Reddit admin team can find a reason that current moderation for a sub isn't creating a "safe enough" environment for their platform.

This is why so many large subs not only share the same leanings and opinions, but often have overlapping moderation teams, too. Just look at who's in charge of them.

u/FirstEvolutionist 5d ago

I had exatcly the same experience. And I have the same fears.

Although I must say that the singularity sub has recently received a big influx recently of new pro AI and accelerationist users that was large enough to improve the quality of the comment sections a bit at least. Not sure if it is going to last oe whether the mods are going to ruin it. I guess it will depend on the quality of the post staying up.

u/Im_Peppermint_Butler 5d ago

Another from the ancient times? Do you remember the days when most of the posts were research papers? So many eons have passed since then, I scarcely remember it.

2

u/ajarOfSalt Singularity by 2030 4d ago

I member. Man in those days r/singularity was the only place you could discuss AI as an exponential reality without being treated like a looney. Crazy to think before the chatGPT boom there were ~70,000 of us after the sub existing 10+ years and now we’ve passed that on this sub in like a year!

16

u/lovesdogsguy AGI by 2027 5d ago

They let people piss all over the place in there. It's so frustrating. Do they know they could just remove the bullshit comments?

8

u/girlgamerpoi 5d ago

My post got removed because I pointed out reddit is pro ai showing a screenshot from r auto moderator. I got perma banned then lmao.

3

u/HistoricalEngineer74 5d ago

I’m banned from there and I have no idea why lol

6

u/girlgamerpoi 5d ago

They got at least one power tripping mod.

u/Nixsal 5d ago

Yes what reddit needs more is more moderation and ai comments. This is what it is missing /s

What's even crazier is that we have just 2% as many subscribers, but 40% of the weekly visitors and 50% of the activity!

It's plausible that we could actually overtake them while having 5% of the subscribers 😂

How can this be explained?

you have no idea how nasty and abusive they are. it's so comical that it's funny

8

u/Silver-Piece-3033 Techno-Accelerationist 5d ago

I've seen how insane those people get even at people who are just moderately pro AI, I can't even imagine the shit you must get in the modmail. Thanks for keeping this sub clean!

5

u/stealthispost Acceleration: Light-speed | AI accelerationist 5d ago

yeah. whatever you can imagine - it's that bad.
anti-AI has become the cause du jour for a lot of people that should probably be getting professional help

2

u/GiveSparklyTwinkly 5d ago

Do they ever have any reasonable, rational, and logical arguments?

2

u/Lord_44th__Raikage 3d ago

You already know every argument they make

This sub has truly come so far in so little time, the last real bastion of optimistic support for progress on this website.

22

u/Efficient-Opinion-92 5d ago

This sub absolutely overtook singularity sub. That place turned  way to negative

People are so blind to what we didn't have 10 years ago, 20 years ago, etc.

When I was a kid I was bored out of my mind. I would hit shit with sticks and play with leaves, getting bitten by an ant was an interesting day. Only one or two good shows on TV, only one or two video games. Now we've got infinite entertainment, I'd call that abundance. Just look at youtube, 10 million free videos uploaded every day, there was no youtube when I was a kid.

Entertainment abundance is only one thing, we can have abundance in other categories of life too.

2

u/Upstairs_Deer6621 5d ago

I agree with your larger point (im 40) but I would say social media has been a net negative and children spend to much time in front of screens. However, if you take the long view of progress every single metric has improved, life expectancy, gdp, the creation of the middle class, the stock market allows everyone to take part in the financial game, medicine, instant interactions with individuals who live in other countries. Space ships, high quality nature videos that allow you to see exactly what it looks like in the amazon without dying. I mean couldn't we just go on and on? I could. Technology is amazing!

2

u/featherless_fiend 5d ago edited 5d ago

I would say social media has been a net negative and children spend to much time in front of screens.

You might say that's a criticism of abundance, the kids got their infinite social media lives and are suffering health effects as a result. Like eating too much candy. Or a more apt comparison would be imagine if we finally obtain infinite free food, that's one of humanity's goals for abundance, right? Well infinite free food is going to have some massive negative side effects too.

So in other words, when we successfully obtain abundance we are NOT going to be happy about it. We're not going to be happy about any of this, bitching about it the whole time, as we sit on our golden thrones.

Even as of this moment, AI is now making infinite video games: "There's too many games! I'm angry!"

1

u/Upstairs_Deer6621 5d ago

You could make that argument, I wouldn't though=) I think abundance does come with other issues sure, we just have to combat them. Be mindful. If we truly experience a singularity there will be a metaphorical pill for any problem really.

As someone who has always been into retrogaming and emulation, too much choice was always a constant you had to learn to overcome.

1

u/Upstairs_Deer6621 5d ago

name your favorite old game of all time!

1

u/GiveSparklyTwinkly 5d ago

I'll just say Cubivore because of the combo of obscurity and favoriteness, but I can't possibly say it's my all time favorite. That'd probably be a really boring answer like OOT or something if I really had to consider it.

1

u/Upstairs_Deer6621 4d ago

neat, thats a cool hobby

4

u/Lord_44th__Raikage 5d ago

That place is such a jump scare compared to this one

3

u/Upstairs_Deer6621 5d ago

It is just like the rest of reddit, they are perpetually offended, agree loudly about politics, and hate rich people, we get it.

2

u/GiveSparklyTwinkly 5d ago

They don't just hate rich people anymore. They specifically think that AI CEOs are evil incarnate and just want to own the world. Like what? Altman is a dipshit, but Amodei is absolutely brilliant and fell into his success to an extent.

We're all slaves to the system that was built before we were born, for better or worse.

Congrats, It's going to be tough as the reddit slop people start arriving. The other sub used to be an amazing sub until the goblins and bots arrived. Right now they are discussing the permanent underclass and how the future will be terrible because of rich people and politics. Same thing happens to every sub.

If I despatch an agent to write some CSS, will you fix the banner image on old reddit?

Edit: I cmd+s this page, gave it to Claude, and it took 33 seconds to write a fix. Mods, please go here:

https://old.reddit.com/r/accelerate/about/stylesheet

then paste this:

#header-img-a {
    display: block;
}

#header-img {
    display: block;
    width: 100%;
    height: auto;
    margin: 0;
}

finally click save.

Yeah, this is the only pro technology sub of any size. I would hope that we continue having pretty strict enforcement against decelerationists and people who are just assholes in general. Say, yes, sometimes it does get cultish in here, but that's fine

3

u/czk_21 5d ago

I remember there were around 3k subs about 2 years ago, the number is going up fast, but not as fast as at r/singularity , they reached a plateau following sigmoid curve more than year ago though

in any case the traffic statisitics seems to be wrong, according to this post https://www.reddit.com/r/accelerate/comments/1wtvnax/raccelerate/ there was significant hike-double of unique visitors in august, yet here it only shows small growth in august
