Subreddit rules: Follow them or get permanently banned

I've had to add 3 new "do not post" rules since January. People keep crossing the line, I assume because the content in the sidebar no longer appears anywhere in most views on "new reddit." I will fix the problem soon, when I have time. In the meantime, here is a place to find our rules that you can't make up an excuse to have missed.

So no more warnings. It's too time-consuming. Play nice or get out forever.

Please do post:

  • Work in progress
  • Finished kits
  • Build/Paint Guides
  • Tips and Tricks
  • Product Recommendations
  • Part overhauls
  • Custom work
  • Ideas and discussions

Please do not post the following:

  • Snapfit only
  • Links to kits for sale
  • Hauls
  • Political opinions
  • Lewds/NSFW
  • AI slop of any sort
  • Irrelevant drama
  • Feedback about other subreddits

New rule: * Any comment in reply to a rule-breaking post risks permban by vicinity/association

If you read the above but are not sure where your post fits in, please stay on code. Note that questions are permitted under the discussions rule. And that the ban on AI slop includes using AI to write posts or comments. If what you write sounds like AI, you might get permbanned!

Examples:

F16 Tomcat? Not on code. A Macross VF in fighter mode? Super on code.

A warship? Not on code. A warship that carries mechs (White Base, Argama, etc.)? On code.

Humans? Not on code (except pilot minis). Humans in power or battle suits? It depends. Non-humans? It depends. Exodia is on code, but not Dark Magician.

Edit: I just had to permban a repeat offender I was foolish enough to let off with a warning previously. There will be no more consideration given, no grace, no more warnings. Violate one of our rules and you're gone forever. It doesn't matter how much history you have here.

Follow the damn rules. It's simple. Post things listed under Please do post and you're probably fine. Post anything under Please do not post and you're outta here. The only appeal is if the ban was mistaken and there was no rule violation.

"Am I advanced enough to post here?" Yes.

The focus of this subreddit is to be a place for people who want to increase their skill at building Gundam models. We like other models, too, if they're similar in spirit. We're not excluding anyone, especially those who are beginners.

This is not a subreddit for advanced gunpla builders, it is a subreddit for advanced gunpla building. The craft itself, and the skill of executing the craft. At all levels.

We welcome posts of things you're trying to do with your gunpla build, but are bad at. Being bad is step 1 of getting good.

We welcome questions and discussion.

This was a great build. Had a lot of fun painting this one. Had to custom mix the orange for this one.
The only negative for me on this was the decals. They are very very flimsy, melt/adhere almost instantly with setter, and they can’t be re moistened to reposition. Once they are on, THEY ARE ON!

The Guilty Custom Build: MG Delta Plus

I finished this kit today and I hate it. The experience was full of ups and downs, and I spent the whole time teetering between excitement and frustration.

It took me a long time to decide to upload these photos, but everything I learned along the way motivated me to do it.

I started working on this kit intermittently, that is, while I was working on other kits like the GUS and the Solaridian. I don't know if it was because I was taking on several projects at once, but I don't understand how I noticed the nub marks on other kits but not on this one. Even while painting, I only became aware of them when I was already applying the metallic coat, not even when washing or priming the piece. To make things worse, the humidity has been particularly high in my city (In France) and has wreaked havoc on the entire finish.

But the reason I finally decided to make this post is because I identified the biggest problem I had, which made me initially blame (not entirely wrongly) the humidity.

It turns out I discovered that I've had rusty water flowing through my airbrush for months.

You have no idea of the amount of dark, rusty water that gushed out when I decided to empty my compressor using the knob at the bottom of the tank for the first time and not as I did before, which was by turning off the engine, releasing the valve and finally cleaning the water trap. I was freaking out

I rushed to check my other projects (which I shared here) and they didn't have any problems, so I guess the water trap couldn't contain the rust and moisture anymore with this one.

After a final two-day cleaning of my compressor, the problem is solved, but the embarrassing "stain of shame" remains on the Delta Plus. To combat the frustration, I applied two coats of Gloss and decals instead of removing all the paint and starting from scratch. I guess it's because I expected the metallic sheen and the decals to help disguise the contaminated paint. The end result... I like it and I hate it.

Losy Joints (even with three coats of Joint Strengthener) This makes posing an unbearable experience, and the paint has been scratched at some edged when attempting certain poses.

So all that's left for me to do is abandon it in the corner of my shelf, but I wonder if I won't value that space more in the future. The only good thing I can take from this experience is the learning to avoid all these errors and procedures in future projects

Moral of the story: Check your compressor after every session if you live in a cold climate. Condensation will fill the tank with water and rust over time.

Esperimenti con resin bit e stucco. Il progetto che ho in mente è una build "heavy dirty" anche perché non sono in grado di fare build "clean". Si salvi chi può

Seam line removal is black magic and you cannot convince me otherwise

The model is the High Grade Tieren, and this is my first time attempting seam line removal on a kit.

It’s time consuming, been one hell of a learning experience, but the results are incredible.

The primer I’ve used is the Kaleido Grey Primer, which requires a post to itself because Gaahleri have made something special.

To summarise, the prep work took forever, but I cannot wait to see the finished kit!

SDEX Nu Gundam Compact (SDEX Nu custom WIP)

Custom I've been working on, on and off for a little while. It's my own take on the Mass Production Nu Gundam as a concept.

This was the second kit I ever built. Since it's an SD kit, I wanted to make it feel like an obscure game variant you'd find in a G Generation or Gihren's Greed game.

Still very rough- just wanted to show what I've got so far. Very happy with the moveable arm shield.

This is kit #6 for me and it was pretty ambitious, but I am glad it is over. There's some temptation to add weathering, but for now I am moving on as I've spent so much time on it already.

A lot of firsts for me on this kit so that means I learned a lot. Built this kit a while ago, but I decided to fully paint the inner frame because I hated how dull the plain gray looked so I had to take it all apart. Also didn't like how plain the fuel rods were so I picked up some 3D printed replacements from Aliexpress. Building and painting them was a nightmare. The plastic is incredibly brittle so safe to say, this build really leveled up my use of super glue. In the end, I really like how they came out. Panel lined, water slide decals added, top coated with gloss, and added photo etched parts (another difficult step. I had to glue these on and it was a nightmare even getting the parts in place.) plus funnel launch effects.

There are so many imperfections looking at it closely, but I'm really happy with how it turned out. Already building the Nu so he has an adversary.

Tips and advice are welcome. I only hand paint as I do not own an airbrush.

Stedi ms-106 va ms-113?

My Ruitool pliers have broken, and I’m thinking of buying a pair from Stedi. At first, I considered the MS-106 model, but then I came across the MS-113, which really piqued my curiosity.

Which ones do you think are more practical?

I build Gunpla and Warhammer, I have some garage kits waiting to be worked on, and I own a resin 3D printer.

PGU Nu WIP

Totally finished with the paint job on the inner frame of the PGU Nu. So far about 90 hours of work have been put into this, so far. I did a test build of the frame, cleaned and sanded all the pieces, stripped all the plating, and repainted everything. The base was done almost entirely with spray cans, but the Amuro A emblem was traced and cut out with masking tape and done with my airbrush.

This thing is truly a monster of a build and I have had an absolute blast with it so far. No issues with any of the joints with the added layers of the paint, and all the gimmicks still work. I plan to do half the funnels next, then the outer armor, and finish with the remaining funnels and accessories. I am hoping to be finished by the beginning of December.

Paints Used:

  • Nazca Super Heavy Mechanical Surfacer
  • Nazca Heavy Mechanical Surfacer

Mixing colors for accuracy

Thumbnail
gallery
23 Upvotes

I'm trying to replicate what's shown on the manual. After my first attempt, I'm only happy with how the light blue for the torso turned out. The dark blue for the limbs looks too much like the Kampfer color scheme. And the dark grey-ish blue came out way more green than I would like.

I'm not too good at ratios, I've read that some people use digital scales to measure out their paints. Any other tips to improve my accuracy besides just eyeballing it?

I painted this knee hinge and it looked super cool but I don't know how I can possibly avoid scratches and chips, even if i sanded some clearance which i did the part will still slide in the hole brushing up against the other part

Is there anything i can do to avoid this?
