"I disagree with communism" and then they disagree with something that isn't communism? Neither Marx nor Lenin claimed that everyone would receive the same salary, they simply argued that lazy owners and selfish executives are an unnecessary burden
284
u/AlternateCore 18d ago
That's the issue of being uneducated lol. People today talk about communism this or socialism that, but don't even know the principles of the ideologies they're against.
84
u/lordehemter 18d ago
Yep, many people simply cant define what they disagree going for buzz words like fascist communism and shit. Hell Trumpist called Biden a communist

u/AlternateCore 18d ago
This leads to issues like voters going against their own interest because they don't know exactly what they're voting for or against. Such as the Obamacare situation where people wanted Obamacare gone, only to lose their ACA benefits because both those things are the same thing. Always do your research before voting guys

Most MAGA voters actually seem to align very well with socialism if you just describe it without the buzzwords.
âFair wages, less power to the 1%, more workers owning part of the company theyâre employed byâ is hard to say no to. They only hate it because âcommunism badâ has been hammered into every single Americanâs heads non-stop since at least 1946.

The real wild thing is that they love it when they get what they call socialism.
I knew an old couple that survived off hate and Fox news that would throw a party every time that they got a new set of their diabetes "Obama" shoes from medicare.
18
u/Imaginary-List-972 18d ago
An old coworker that friended me on facebook made a bunch of posts against gun control saying that was communism. I tried to explain that though I'm not for communism, it's mostly an economic model that has nothing to do with communism. Even if a communist country initiated gun control of some type, that doesn't make it part of the communist ideology. But even that very simple concept was too complex for them to grasp.
12
u/memera- 18d ago
Anti-communist propaganda worked so well because it tied authoritarianism to an economic model. People unironically think the nazis were communist.
communist = totalitarian, therefore totalitarian = communist. Nazis were totalitarian, so they were communist
I think at least a very basic version of the two-axis political chart needs to be taught in school, it'd be so simple if people understood that cultural politics and economic politics are not the same thing
5
u/MagMati55 18d ago
To be fair a lot of the socialist states had to set up a more militarised state to avoid losing an impending counterrecolution and then later had to fight capitalist powers that were much stronger than them.
The Paris commune didint randomly failed. Soldiers entered it.

u/Tay_Hlebko 18d ago
Under a fully realized Marxist system, money wouldn't even exist lmao
6
u/CommanderKoba 18d ago edited 18d ago
That's end stage communism, socialism is a transitional stage that requires the development of the productive forces and the progression of social relations to get to that point where money can be abolished.
You can't just abolish money immediately unfortunately.
Though people would get paid through a labor voucher system that is calculated based on Marx's labor theory of value.
So the amount you get paid is accurately reflected based on the labor you put forth, rather than an arbitrary decision by a capitalist.
8
u/Pleasant-Future5818 18d ago
I don't understand how that isn't just money but used differently
→ More replies (2)5
u/CommanderKoba 18d ago edited 17d ago
Money as it exists now is a social relation under capitalism.
So it wouldn't technically be money in the sense of money under capitalism, because instead it's value would be determined at the root, which is your labor.
I am trying to simplify this explanation and the simplification of such can cause a misunderstanding.
A highly developed socialist society in some sense can eliminate the social relation that makes up money as we know it today, but you would still be using paper (or now a digital form) that represents value for purchasing goods.
That value would just be determined concretely based on labor, rather than the market or the capitalist.
So money in layman's terms would still exist yes, but its value would be formed differently until absolute abundance is achieved with the advancement of manufacturing techniques, the productive forces in general.
Say we have fully automated the manufacturing of basic goods, then they can be given freely based on need, without requiring any form of payment that leverages the distribution of goods based on labor.
That is when "money" in laymen's terms can be eliminated.
Technically the original comment I was responding to is correct if they were referring to the social relation that makes up money under capitalism, because ideally in a highly developed Socialist system, that social relation could be abolished, but if they were referring to money in laymen's terms, which is just using an object that represents value for purchasing goods, that cannot be eliminated until full communism is achieved through the advancement of the productive forces.
It's quite complex.
A socialist society can only develop the social relations in lock step with the productive forces of that society, and the general environment of the entire planet. That's why China today still leverages the global market because that is a requirement to interact and compete with the capitalist world.
They can only abolish the current social relation of money, when they have advanced sufficiently to move onto a labor voucher system instead, then eventually they can eliminate it all together.
Communism is a multigenerational project, not an immediate destination unfortunately.

If each persons one hour of labor is compensated the same or at least similarly, hell yeah. Why should an individual make more in a single day than a physician would make in a year?
3
u/SnakeCharmer20 17d ago
Should a physician make more than a cashier?
9
u/Severe-Excitement192 17d ago
Socialism doesnât mean remove all hierarchy it means hierarchy needs to be justified. If the physicianâs labor is exceptionally skilled then they still get adequate compensation aligned with the relative value of labor. Comparing a 100$/hr physician with a 15$/hr cashier is not going to be significantly different between capitalism and socialism relative to business executives and even senior engineers. The better question is should a board member or other executive make 1000x more than the senior engineers that design the product/services? I have worked as an engineer at a rate of 50$/hr for a company where the ownerâs qualification was being the grandson of the founder and he took in well over a million dollars a year worth of company shares without ever making a single improvement to the companyâs products/services. The owner never actually liquidated the shares so he never paid taxes, he just got new loans every year and used the shares as collateral. Iâm not even advocating for myself to make more Iâm comfortable, who Iâm really advocating for are the underpaid skilled labor of people like the operators of the machines building our parts and even the cashier at Walmart. They provide real service to the economy and the government has to step in with SNAP, Medicaid, or other assistance because the company can get away with giving millions to owners who evade taxes while my taxes pay for the government assistance for the underpaid laborers. I am happy that the Walmart cashier has access to SNAP and Medicaid because I used to be on that assistance when I worked as cook before finishing my degree. Instead of taxing wealth more the USA government is preparing to let social security go insolvent meaning that in this trajectory Iâm going to get less social security benefits (inflation adjusted) than my parents did.
→ More replies (1)3
u/Kitsunenustik 17d ago
Why not?
If the physician makes enough that the cashier canât live off his wage, thatâs an issue of cruel planning.
If the cashier makes enough to compete with a physician thatâs an issue of flawed merit values.
People call money evil not because itâs a value system. Its value is tied to artificial power disparity and popularity. What I consistently see people hope for, is it will one day tie directly to merit and work ethic.
I give up hope.
Hope kept my family struggling to their deaths. Hope kept me laboring as a child. Hope meant once I had the power disparity, the popularity, my new struggle was convincing everyone else it was my merit and work ethic that got me the leg up I had.

u/Bonk_No_Horni 17d ago
Some people are still confused about socialism vs communism. And there are many kinds of socialism. You can be rich and successful under socialism and still eliminate struggling class. You Also reduce crime when people aren't fucking starving because they can't afford food.
These conservatives don't understand that public road is socialism
28
u/LesserValkyrie 17d ago
It's because they don't teach the difference in the US
Communism = gulags
Socialism = not working the weekend, having a living wage, your boss has to provide PPE, your boss can't shoot you down if you not work enough, maternality leave, PTO, healthcare, unions, worker ownership, unions, collective bargaining, higher wages, shorter hours, workplace democracy, job security, paid leave, social security, public services, wealth redistribution, worker protections
But in the american school it's better to teach the kids that "higher wages" = "gulags" so they don't ask for human's rights
→ More replies (25)3
u/Logical-Lab3661 17d ago
Please do not post what you do not know. There's no country in the world, which built communism. And gulags were in a USSR, which at the time officially, publicly stated that they are at basic socialism. Developed socialism in USSR was officially built only in 1961. They never ever built communism. Communism was only a goal.

u/PotentialHoneydew947 17d ago

This isnât what communism or socialism is. Socialism is the people controlling the means of production, ie publicly owned hospitals, farms, factories etc. getting paid more than someone else is still absolutely possible, but it would be a lot harder to have an unfair amount of money.
When communists talk about the abolition of private property, they usually arenât referring to someone owning some random object. Marx said that private property was not a personâs belongings, such as their house, their car, things they use in everyday life, but the things owned by the upper class, like large swathes of land, factories, stocks and the like.
Neither rely on everyone being paid the same
11
u/Gamer_G33k17 17d ago
Socialism is the SOCIAL ownership of the means of production, not the state. The government may RUN these programs, but they'd be OWNED by the people. Communism just goes the extra step of cutting out the state.

UGh oh my god. I'm so sick of this kind of shit. All of these people who think capitalism is getting paid for work or buying and selling shit. 99.9% of people could have the same job, get paid the same wage, and buy and sell the same shit under a socialist system that was run fairly. There just wouldn't be someone getting 80% of your productivity for their own pocket. If we just had higher income tax for the highest-paid, there wouldn't be an incentive to just scrape out all of the profits and enshittify everything. That's the capitalist/socialist compromise. But our representatives just aren't on the people's side any more; they're on capital's side so the wealthy pay less and less and the country is slowly being strangled. They pushed it to a breaking point.

Socialism sounds terrible. Taylor Swift shouldn't earn anywhere near as much as bongo playing monkeys.
13
u/Spamsdelicious 17d ago
As usual, that isn't even how socialism works đ
Contribution-based pay: Socialist systems generally compensate workers based on the quantity, quality, and difficulty of their labor rather than giving everyone an identical paycheck.
Skill and effort differences: Jobs that require more training, skill, responsibility, or heavy effort typically offer higher compensation to incentivize productivity.
The origin of the claim: The phrase comes from a political meme meant to criticize or satirize socialist concepts of wealth redistribution, rather than describing how socialist economic policy actually functions.

I would be remiss to not add:Â

The idiots arguing against communism have never read Marx Mannifesto, nor do they understand the actual concept of socialism in its many forms.
Without going into full Ted Talk mode, the basic concept is to distribute wealth amongst the working class. The monkey is just some straw man distraction to make something fairly straightforward seem confusing.
Capitalism is great at generating a lot of wealth for a small minority, and the gap only increases as the machine keeps running. Communism was meant to be a stop gap, or a governor to that machine⌠in its purest form it is the opposite of capitalism and would run into the same fallacy on the opposite end of the spectrum. An economy unable to generate drive because the means of production is choked.
Most European countries practice a free market economy with a strong central government that fill the gap instead with social programs and take away the cost of certain basic rights (the easiest to point at is socialized medicine of course). The market remains basically capitalistic with a few regulations to protect workers and keep the gap between the wealthy and poor relatively smallâŚ. But when your basic needs are met, the class divide is nearly invisible. There are plenty of wealthy Europeans and plenty of poor, but understanding between the lowliest worker and the wealthiest CEO is built on respect rather than loathing.
Damnit⌠this still ended up long, even with me trying to keep it as simple as I could. Sorry for the essay!

Socialism isn't like that... Socialism (mentioned by Karl Marx, recently studied) wants to protect the rights and the dignity of less lucky classes and workers by abolishing private property ON MACHINERY AND INDUSTRY to ensure that workers have a rightful, equal payment (not on houses as many tried to make people think) calling it Scientific Socialism (later became more.related to the Marx's philosophical school, hence identified in more recent times as Marxism too) since Karl Marx analyzed the strifes of social classes and birthed the rightful idea that for making changes possible the proletariat had to face off the bourgeois and be able to influence politics like them (before you say that he's a communist because of his manifesto or smth, no, communist (as we intend it today) is more extreme than Marxism)

If anything, this shows Taylor makes too much money (which she does).

The post is meant to ragebait socialists. It appears in your algorithms because most of the people who engage with it are similar to you and got ragebaited.
Social media algorithms don't show you what they think you'll like they show you what they think you'll react to. And it's been proven people will lock in way harder to negative stimulus. Because if everything is good you keep moving, but if something is wrong you wanna do something about it.

Tell me that you don't understand Socialism without saying that you don't understand Socialism.

If we're doing that, can I be the person looking after the monkey and his multi-million dollar account bank account? I promise I will provide everything the monkey needs in exchange for reasonable compensation. Monkey gets bananas, I get to run his bank account. Everyone is happy. I honestly don't see a problem with that.

Can we get the billionaire bongo playing monkey in this timeline? It wouldn't be any good, obviously, but it would be a very helpful illustration as to how fucking pointless and useless billionaires are. And then we could pay both of them less.

Everyone knows communism is when you pay monkeys a living wage just as Carl Marks intended

In socialism I lived in, people working in entertainment industry, did have many "star" benefits just like their western counterparts. They even were relatively better than average factory blue collar guy, who watched them in state TV or listened them in state radio. Those socialist entertainers usually drove Western made cars, they did very well paid gigs, lived in big apartments or build themselves mansions. Their popularity opened them many doors that would be closed for average guy.
Only extra requirement, they had to show support for the rulling communist party, and distance themselves from dissent. Otherwise, no well paid gigs, no TV, no recording contracts, right back down to the factory job or boiler room. There were few that felled out of regimes favor who served as an example for the rest.

That's communism, not socialism, you seem to get confused during your own comment.
Communism is a lot more extreme.

Yeah, Being a singer means you are a public person, and Public persons in European Communism were earning more money, just like all party members and assigned leaders for every factory.

The best way to respond to idiots that think all socialists are evil is to simply say, "Jesus was a socialist".

Why do we act like there just doesn't have to be an entire change to the finances of the country along with the power of those who have ruined it?

A monkey playing bongos would be way more entertaining than Taylor Swift.

u/Necessary_Regret3329 18d ago
Ugh, I'd hate to listen to that! I'll take the monkeys playing bongos all day!

u/AppropriateLie9140 18d ago
Not how socialism works, they'd get the same amount from the government but they'd still have outside income

My strategy has become just call anyone posting shit like this a cunt and they tend to block you thereby making it less likely for you to see their shit

Maybe âtheyâ think youâll be offended on Taylor Swiftâs behalf.

Not knowing the definitions of terms is exactly what the elites love out of their puppets. Thatâs why they made sure Trump got elected twice.
